The Range Feud
Original Vintage Photo Publicity Still
Starring John Wayne and Buck Jones

Long before John Wayne, the biggest western movie star was Buck Jones.    Unfortunately John Wayne's early mentor was tragically killed in 1942.    Buck Jones was one of the 492 victims of the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston, Massachusetts on November 28, 1942. He died two days later on November 30, at 50 years of age.

Very rare vintage photo still of a 24 year old John Wayne and Buck Jones.  Maybe the only original  photo of the two in existence.    Very good condition with nice vintage sepia tone.  * See enlargeable images above.

The Range Feud, the 1931 D. Ross Lederman romantic cowboy western ("Romance and Thrills!") starring Buck Jones ("The Screen's Greatest Outdoor Star!"), John Wayne, Susan Fleming (an actress who played minor roles in movies from 1931 to 1936, at which point she married Harpo Marx, and basically retired), Edward Le Saint, and Will Walling. Note that Buck Jones' white horse was named Silver (just like The Lone Ranger's later on!), and Silver made 73 movies with Buck Jones from 1922 until Jones' death in 1942 in the tragic Coconut Grove fire. But oddly, Silver was almost never billed on the posters for Buck Jones' movies as so many other famous horses (most especially Tom Mix's Tony) were!

Important Added Info: Note that after John Wayne had his big break in The Big Trail, which did poorly at the box office, he got supporting roles in several Buck Jones westerns, but he was not pictured on the posters, although he was credited. This still has a wonderful image of John Wayne and Buck Jones on their horses and may be one of the only images of them togetehr in existence.  !
