John Wayne Personal Lighter and Signed Letter, 1977

“Stolen from John Wayne” engraved lighter presented to a former employee

Here is an extraordinary piece of Hollywood History!   An original lighter John Wayne made for the movie "The Shootist" presented to a former employee along with the original letter on his personal stationary he sent her and original postmarked envelop.   Apparently over the years many of John Wayne’s cigarette lighters “disappeared”.  Hence, he started to engrave his name on them and added “Stolen from” to discourage admirers of his lighters…   Eventually he started to make a few for each film during his later years.    This lighter he made during filming for “The Shootist” was given to an employee who lost her own lighter he gave to her for one of his films..  (NOTE: His remark to her in the letter "Mission Accomplished")..  It also comes withJohn Wayne memorabilia collectible lighter the amazing signed letter John Wayne sent her with this lighter.    An exceptionally impressive pair of personal John Wayne relics presented to a close friend at the time of his last film …

Typed letter signed, one page, 6 x 8.25, personal letterhead, December 27, 1977. Brief letter to Susan McCain at WXIA-TV in Atlanta, typed by Wayne’s last secretary(and lover) Pat Stacy and authentically signed by John Wayne. In full: “Mission accomplished. Thank you for the compliment.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope; and a silver  Zippo lighter, engraved on one side, “The Shootist,” and “Stolen from John Wayne,” on the other side. Wayne had a habit of providing these lighters to colleagues and friends on the sets of many of his motion pictures. When McCain was employed by Wayne, a lighter of hers was taken and never returned. She wrote to Wayne and received the lighter and letter offered here. In fine condition..
