BIOGRAPHY:

Johan ‘Mari’ Henri ten Kate was born in The Hague on March 4th, 1831. He received his artistic training in his hometown at the Academy of Arts, where his brother, older by 9 years, H.F.C. ten Kate (1822-1891) taught him in the arts. He also took classes at the "Haagse Houtgraveerschool" (translated as the "Hague wood engraving school"). At the age of 19, Ten Kate moved to Amsterdam, where he would stay until 1871 and became a member of the Amsterdam Royal Academy of Arts in 1852. During his life he travelled to France, England and Italy. He even lived in the Dutch East Indies for a while.

Ten Kate was a talented painter and outstanding watercolourist. He is known for his genre scenes of children, often in the countryside or at the beach, enjoying themselves playing or with animals. His style is considered typically Romantic, since it romanticizes reality, instead of accurately depicting it. During his time, the life of the peasants he depicted was much more harsh and poor.

Mari ten Kate passed away at the age of 79, on March 26th 1910. His son Johannes Marinus ten Kate (1859-1896) became a talented painter as well, keeping the artistic family tradition alive.
