For a number of reasons this autographed Frank Sinatra is not only an exquisite piece but a historical treasure. First it was acquired in person by a well known and respected autograph hound Michael Wehrmann. I have since communicated with Michael Wehrmann and he discusses his many encounters with Sinatra and Sinatra's scary bodyguard. Michael would wait outside Sinatra's apartment at the Waldorf waiting to return from dinner. There is no one that I am aware of that acquired more in-person Frank Sinatra autographs than Michael Wehrmann. Michael mentioned he has held on to most of his Sinatra signed photos because he feels they will go up in value significantly in the next few years. Only recently has he consigned a couple of them to a major autograph auction house. This treasured autographed piece is signed (NOT personalized) "Frank Sinatra" in his late 80's, early 90's style signature.

Also, it was signed during the late 80's/early 90's when it was next to impossible to get Sinatra to respond to an autograph requests (Based on what we have seen over the past 25 years, 100% of ALL Sinatra autographs obtained through the mail were signed by his secretary). In 20+ years of collecting Frank Sinatra autographs and memorabilia we have only seen two occasions where he added a drawing after his signature. Frank Sinatra was also an artist and recently his paintings sold at the Jilly Rizzo auction for over $25,000 each. He also had an affection for clowns as he did a number of clown paintings which he displayed in his home. In the image we display here he also played a clown in a movie or TV but we are not sure of the exact title of this role.

Original Vintage Autographs by Frank Sinatra EARLY in his career in 1940.
Also, several others including Chico Marx and the Ink Spots Provenance follows.

This is for a collection of autographs displayed in a frame from an estate. The sellers loved to collect autographs, but never seemed to have a slip of paper with them, so whatever was available was signed. As a result, the signatures have good provenance. One is on the back of 1942 driver's license and other is on an old post card. This couple went to California and Las Vegas frequently in the 1940's and 1950's and this is when this set of autographs were collected.

The autographs were in a frame and hung in a prominent place in the home for all to admire. I decided that instead of selling individually that I would keep the collection in tact and sell together as original put together over several years by the original owners. .

1. Frank Sinatra, early autograph. This is on the back of a receipt that is dated September 30, 1940. It is in pencil and the paper has yellowed. Solid consistency with Sinatra signature study for 1940 period style signature.

2. Chico Marx autograph on the back of a 1942 Missouri license.

3. Frankie Laine signature on a vintage post card for Eddie's Oasis in Los Angles.

4. Bill Kenny, leader of the 4 Inkspots. "Into each life some rain must fall-". On an advertisement flyer.

5. Members of the Kay Kyser College of Musical Knowledge band and the ticket from a performance at the magnificent Fox Theatre in St Louis. The signatures are on the back of a business card.

Authentic Vintage Autograph

Here is a rare vintage autograph from Fred Gwynne best known for his immortal role as "Herman Munster". Gwynne was not a prolific autograph signor , hence these do not appear on the market often, Also, there are many forgeries out there, particularly on Munster photos.  But, if you know what to look for the forgeries are quite easy to detect (though will look very similar to the inexperienced eye).   This great piece was acquired in person in the mid 1960’s. Fred has signed and inscribed “To Roy Fred Gwynne” in heavy black ball point pen.  On the back is an old newspaper or TV guide clipping image of “Herman Minster”.

The person I bought from contacted Alex who didn't live far from him in CA.  My source met with Alex and bought additional vintage Horror memorabilia from him.   At one meeting my source brought this photo to show Alex and Alex recounted exactly where and when Lugosi signed this photo for him.  Written provenance of this meeting from my source is included.

AN extraordinary signing, first Harpo includes a one of a kind inscription "Four Bad Jews on good Friday" and then Groucho signs with his real first name "Julius H. Marx" , the first time we have seen him sign his real name. This most likely places this autograph signing sometime in the late 1920's or very early 30's, before he would adopt and use "Groucho"

After collecting autographs for 25 years one rarely comes across an EXCEPTIONAL museum quality piece that stands out above all the rest. I have seen a number Brando autographs over the years, however, this is indeed the most striking, authentic example I have ever seen. Everything about this piece makes it extraordinary. The unquestionable Brando GENUINE handwriting and vintage ballpoint pen signature, the personal inscription, the medium, Star Sporting Goods in Hollywood , apparently acquired while Brando was shopping. The date made by the recipient (during the filming of the "Godfather"), also in vintage ink. Compared to most of the scribbled, un-inscribed Brando signatures, this vintage autographed treasure stands out above all others I have seen in every way! And, the well known fact that Brando loathed signing autographs and hence, there are SCARCELY few authentic examples on the market, makes this an extraordinary find!.

Ballpoint signature and inscription, “To Carol, Regards, Marlon Brando,” on an off-white 4 x 5 sheet of Hank Kroof’s Star Sporting Goods stationery. Some scattered light wrinkling and creasing, collector’s date notation of May 8, 1971, to top right, hence placing Brando there while most likely filming the "Godfather" which would be released in August 1972.

As most collectors know Brando was infamous for his distain to autograph seekers, and would even get “unfriendly” when approached. On the other hand Brando sometimes had a “soft spot” for the working man or woman such as waitresses and in this case a retail store clerk. Apparently, once in a great while, he had brief moments of consideration for such people. Years ago I purchased a Brando autograph from a waitress who obtained his signature after she gave him his meal check (and she didn’t even ask him for it). At the same time she said three people approached him and he asked them to leave him alone. Another soft spot for Brando were people associated with Native Americans. So, while it wasn’t impossible to obtain his autograph, it was just impossible for the autograph seeker. Hence, genuine Brando autographs are extremely Scarce!

Because of the value, SCARITY and high desirability of Marlon Brando autographs he has become a prime target for the forgers selling on the internet auction sites. Fortunately Brando’s distinctive style makes forgeries easily detectable to the experienced eye. Still, as high as 98% of Brando autographs from online auction sites are fake. So beware! There are even a few more sophisticated forgers who use old paper torn from old books. Remember the Certificate of Authenticity is worthless unless it comes from a reputable source that has been in business for a number of years, doesn't SOLELY sell on Ebay and most important offers a lifetime guarantee of authenticity.

Rare Personal Letter from Sherlock Holmes to Clifton Webb

Basil Rathbone Autograph Letter Signed "Basil & Ouida" to Clifton Webb, one page, plain stationery, 6.75" x 10", New York, January 9, 1963. It begins: "Dear Cliffy. We heard you were in hospital in Houston Texas. How could you desert the Great State of California for the Greater State of Texas!..." He goes on to talk about their long friendship, the NY newspaper strike, Mabel's passing, and he asks Clifton to get in touch with them. Also in this lot are two 10" x 8" B&W photos showing the Rathbones, David Niven, Mabelle Webb and others at a dinner party. All three items are in excellent condition. A portion of the letter's original mailing envelope is included.

On January 20, 1961 Frank Sinatra hosted the John F Kennedy Inaugural Gala. It was a well publicized event not without controversy that Sinatra was hosting the gala. And so, when Kennedy won the election, he turned to his tireless supporters and asked Sinatra and Lawford to produce his Inaugural Gala.

For more than 50 years, Sinatra was a friend to presidents. But along the way, he made a political U-turn after a bitter falling-out with JFK.

Mr. Kennedy cut off ties with Sinatra in 1962 because of the singer's reputed mob ties, and "from there on in, it was no longer Frank Sinatra, Democrat; it was Frank Sinatra, Republican," says columnist Army Archerd of Daily Variety.

This historical dinner menu has been authentically autographed by Frank Sinatra on the cover. In over 25 years of collecting this is the ONLY JFK Inaugural Gala related Frank Sinatra autograph we have ever seen. Signed (not personalized) "Frank Sinatra" with an early 60's style signature.

Beautiful Vintage 8x10" sepia toned photograph of Laurel & Hardy, signed by same in blue ink to bottom margin. Inscription reads "Hello Jean! Stan Laurel Oliver Hardy". Top left cornerf has a crease not affecting the image area.  Some grime residue on outer border around photo.  The good news is it comes off rather easily. I was able to easily scrap off a small section with my fingernail.  But, will leave any cleaning up to the new owner.

Original Sketch Artwork of "Herman Munster"

This is a very rare original sketch drawn by Fred Gwynne of his immortal character “Herman Munster”. It is widely known that Gwynne rarely even signed anything relating to the Munsters, especially after the show ended in the mid sixties.  So, these actual sketches of Herman Munster are extremely scarce. It is estimated by the top Hollywood autograph dealer that only about four Authentic examples (though there are forgeries floating around such as on eBay) have surfaced in the market place in the past 30 years. We now have TWO of them.

The fact that he would be typed cast would forever haunt him.  However, it was later in life that he was making a comeback both in Stephen King’s “Pet Cemetery” and a most notable performance as Judge Chamberlain Haller in “My Cousin Vinny” which premiered a year before he died.  He was a very beloved character and according to those who knew him, a very gracious person. RARE VINTAGE Autographs

These two legendary autographs came from a  wonderful autograph book belonged to the twin daughters of nightclub owner Eddy Ramshaw, Betty Jane and Joanne (Ramsahai), who were born in 1946. It is made of red leatherette and measures 6 1/8 inches by 5 1/8 inches. The binding on the front is separated but not torn away from the book. Each of the autographs are on separate pages as shown in the photographs. Eddy Ramshaw owned many nightclubs and restaurants during the 40’s and 50’s two of which were the West Side Show Spot at 48th Street in the Theatre District and The Mabel Mercer ByLine Room at 56th Street and 5th Avenue. Mabel Mercer was a legendary cabaret singer Mabel Mercer was born in 1900 in Staffordshire, England.

The two most important, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis are highlighted here and would also be most disirable to have framed together. with a great photo of the two "Rat Packers".  Frank signs , - "For Betty Jane, Chris and Joane ~Love and XXXXXX Frank Sinatra" and Sammy Davis -"To Joann and Betty, My Best Always-Sammy Davis Jr.   The autographs are about as bold and perfect as you will ever find.  And, if so desired the inscriptions could easily be matted out.

Sylvia Syms was born Sylvia Blagman on December 2, 1917, in Brooklyn. She was one of America's most distinguished cabaret and jazz singers with an appreciation of lyrics. Sylvia discovered the wonders of jazz in the clubs of New York's 52nd Street while still in her teens and was inspired and informally trained by Billie Holiday. Frank Sinatra called her the "Buddha" on account of her short stature, but he was one of her greatest admirers, hailing her as "the best saloon singer in the world". He also produced her 1982 album Syms By Sinatra. She died of a heart attack while performing a tribute program to Frank Sinatra in the Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel in Manhattan.Cy Coleman

Cy Coleman - was one of the all-time great composers of Broadway musicals. TLS signed “Jim Stewart,” one page, 6 x 8.5, personal letterhead, December 20, 1947. Stewart writes to Lillian Baas in Waukesha, Wisconsin. In full: “Thanks for the fine and interesting letter. I’m glad you liked the Jack Carson show. I’ve must returned from M.C.’ing the Press Show in Cleveland, and while I was gone my parents arrived in town to spend the holidays here with me. Rehearsals for ‘The Rope’ will not start till January, since they are still trying to cast the rest of the picture. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas season and a very happy New Year….”

In the following year, Stewart costarred in Alfred Hitchock’s Rope, inspired by the Leopold and Loeb murder case, with Farley Granger and John Dall. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Mild handling wear, otherwise fine condition.

One of the single most image-defining items associated with Sinatra (aside from the blue eyes, of course), offered here is a vintage black Bloomingdales fedora hat personally owned and worn by the legendary crooner himself! Personally gifted by Sinatra to famed talk show host Joe Franklin and his "Memory Lane" collection of memorabilia, Franklin states in the letter of provenance, "This wonderful and long-cherished item of Frank Sinatra and Entertainment history...has been a very important part of my Memory Lane Collection of Memorabilia...Frank retired this particular fedora hat to my care in 1979-80...when he was peforming a "spring cleaning" of his New York City residence. *UPDATE: On January 6, 2009, I contacted and spoke to Joe Franklin about this hat. Mr Franklin well remembers the hat (and regrets sending it to an auction house and said he would love to have the hat back, he made me a surprising offer). He recalls the time Frank Sinatra, while in Mr. SInatra's Waldorf apartment, offered him the hat. He said he clearly recalls when this took place because Mr. Sinatra also gave him two bibles. Joe then went on to tell me he had a couple other extraordinary items such as Boris Karloff's makeup kit which was given to Joe while Karloff was doing a play in NYC (I think Joe said play was Peter Pan). He then told me (and then sent me photos) that the kit originally had Karloff’s dentures. The dentures were later confirmed authentic by Los Angeles forensic dental surgeon, Dr. Jay Grossman – an expert government witness, and John Travolta’s Personal dentist.

Original 5x7" photo, vintage signed and inscribed in fountain pen by legendary horror actor Boris Karloff. Photo is attached with tape on the back to an 8x10" matt. Comes with the original envelope, postmarked 1950, also in Karloff's own distinctive and recognizable hand. Exceptional piece!

Karloff was Hollywood's most successful boogeyman, an actor whose menacing mien scared the heck out of several generations of film fans. The son of a family of British diplomats, he eschewed foreign-service work in favor of acting, emigrating to Canada and eventually touring with small companies all over North America. He made his screen debut as an extra in "The Dumb Girl of Portici" (1916), but didn't approach film work in earnest until 1919, when he appeared with Douglas Fairbanks in "His Majesty, The American." Having resigned himself to work as a character actor, Karloff was more than happy to assume a role originally offered to "Dracula" star Bela Lugosi, who refused it on the ground that he would be unrecognizable under heavy makeup in a part with no dialogue -Karloff played the lumbering monster in "Frankenstein" (1931), a physically demanding assignment that made him a star. Considered a late bloomer in Hollywood, "Frankenstein" premiered when he was 44 years old. Interestingly, he narrated TV's "How The Grinch Stole Christmas!" (1966), and was the original inspiration for the first illustrations of the Incredible Hulk. Karloff died in 1969.

Terrific EXTREMELY RARE, 7.75 x 10.25 magazine photo of Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster, clutching a statue in evident despair, boldly signed and inscribed in ballpoint, “Best wishes to Tom Crow, Boris Karloff.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Karloff’s hand and postmarked Kensington [Karloff then lived in his homeland of Great Britain], December 13, 1966. Both items are attractively matted and framed together to an overall size of 24 x 19.5. Intersecting mailing folds to photo (which Karloff appears to have purposely avoided with his carefully placed signature), otherwise fine condition. A must for the serious horror collector! Signed photos of Karloff as the monster are nearly impossible to find, at best, and represent one of the pinnacles of signed photos, not for just the horror collector, but the entertainment enthusiast as well. Sixteen pages, 8.5 x 11, October 21, 1955. Agreement between Loew’s Incorporated and Sinatra to appear in the role of Mike Conners in the film entitled High Society. Sinatra will receive a salary of $200,000 for the film, payable in installments. Sinatra will also receive additional weekly payments should the schedule exceed sixteen weeks. A paragraph concerning screen credit states that Sinatra will receive no less than third billing and “in giving such credit the names of no members of the cast other than Bing Crosby or Grace Kelly may proceed your name and your name shall be displayed in the same size.” Signed on page fifteen in black ink by Sinatra. In fine condition, with punch and staple holes to top edge and some mild handling wear. PSA/DNA CERTIFIED.

Daffy glossy 8 x 10 photo of Harpo with a handful of cash next to a singer in fishnet stockings, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Mildred, Fondly, Harpo.” In fine condition, with light corner bends, a few dings, and small abrasions to background at lower right which can easily be matted out.
