Yankee Doodle Dandy (Warner Brothers, 1942). One Sheet (27" X 41"). The sort-of-true life story of George M. Cohan won an Oscar for James Cagney. When it came out, Cohan said, "It was a good movie. Who was it about?" It was a real departure for Cagney who had been cast in one gangster part after another. However, Cagney was originally trained as a dancer and his talents are showcased here.

It is on a rare occasion we acquire one of these 1949 re-release OZ lobby cards.  We always believed they were superior to the original 1939 cards, the color, artwork , graphics are just spectacular. For many years we thought these 49 lobby cards were our little secret. That changed last year when Heritage sold eight cards separately. The prices shocked everyone. One sold for over $4200! Even more then the original 1939 cards. Our little secret was no longer. The rest of the collecting world apparently discovered these extraordinary treasures.

Here we are offering one of the best cards of the set, "Lion Acts Tough" .  This particular card was one of the rare OZ lobby cards, ONLY produced for this 1949 lobby card set. One of our favorites. You know the scene. A BEAUTY!   The colors and contrast are exceptional on this vintage lobby card. It usually takes us several years to find ONE of these. However, we were fortunate recently to acquire FOUR of these magnificent pieces of Hollywood History. Be sure to check them out. Signed Letter - 1951

John F. Kennedy letter from May 10, 1951 as congressman with fantastic content. The letter was sent to Korean doctor who was displaced during the Korean War, which was still raging at the time of this letter being signed. Kennedy happily informs the man that his application for permanent residency in the United States has been accepted. Furthermore the letter is quite intriguing when examining the date it was signed. I have done research and I am nearly certain this was signed the exact same day that Kennedy met Jacqueline Bouvier at a Georgetown dinner party. The letter is in terrific condition and is signed in full at the conclusion. A truly historical letter.

Also, seasoned collectors know that 99% of the Kennedy autographs on the market were signed by a secretary or autopen machine (or in the case of Ebay mostly forgeries), particularly after 1954.  This has been heavily researched and we have no doubt it is a genuine signature and guarantee it's authenticity for life.

Comes with a wonderful photograph, JFK, the 35th President of the United States, is seen on Squaw Island, Hyannisport, MA. President John F. Kennedy was being interviewed by the famous Walter Cronkite on September 2 , 1963, just two months before that fateful day. .

James Emory Foxx ( 1907 - 1967) was an American first baseman in Major League Baseball who was one of the greatest right-handed power hitters to ever play the sport. Foxx was the second major league player to hit 500 career home runs, and at age 32 years, 11 months, and two days, is still the youngest ever to reach that mark. Foxx was one of the three or four most feared sluggers of his era. The great Yankee pitcher Lefty Gomez once said of him, "He has muscles in his hair." In 1937 Foxx hit a ball into the third deck of the left-field stands at Yankee Stadium in New York, a very rare feat because of the distance and the angle of the stands. Gomez was the pitcher who gave it up, and when asked how far it went, he said, "I don't know, but I do know it took somebody 45 minutes to go up there and get it back." He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1951. At the end of his career, his 534 home runs placed him second only to Ruth on the all-time list, and first among right-handed hitters. He retained these positions until Willie Mays passed Foxx for 2nd place on the all-time HR list in 1966. In 1999, he ranked number 15 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players, and was a nominee for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. Although Foxx's name appears both as Jimmy Foxx and Jimmie Foxx in newspaper accounts, box scores, baseball cards, and other records, Foxx generally signed his name "Jimmie." Offered here is his signature, written in bold, blue ink, and affixed to a 3" by 5" index card. The back of the card is blank.

Spectacular portrait of "Ann Perls". The colors, detail, subject, table objects, background painting onto which he applies his signature make this an exceptional work of art and one of Fiene best. Although he was primarily known for his city scenes his often produced some remarkable portraits. This is the best portrait, based on our extensive research on hundreds of his paintings, he has ever produced. The closest style of work very similar to this we could find is the one which sold in the early 90's for $8800, which was much smaller and we believe not in the same extraordinary category as this one. Refer to the image of it provided.

It comes in a high quality frame which appears to have been framed in the 40's or 50's. The original Gallery label from Associated American Artists in New York is still attached, but is torn and has become fragile. Also has a label from an old auction sale on back. Both labels identify this as "Portrait of Ann Perls" by Ernest Fiene. He has SIGNED onto the inside painting behind Ann Perls head, "E. Fiene" . Refer to images.

Artist: Ernest Fiene (1894-1965) is a highly listed artist with a strong history of appreciation based on hundreds of auction sales. 

Sales history: Sold "Waterfront, Lower Manhattan" Sotheby's December 2004 for $38,400 (est was $8,000-$12,000).

Based on our research of hundreds of his paintings, our impression is this is one of the best works of art he produced. Hence, we think our asking price is quite reasonable considering the quality and high demand of this artist's work.

Bio:

Fiene, born in Germany, became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1927, having spent the previous fifteen years studying art at various New York institutions and building his reputation as a painter of American scenes.

A fixture on the faculty of the Art Students League, he was also a prolific artist with a body of work spanning many media, from etchings to frescoes.

A teacher and artist, Ernest Fiene created works in many media but was noted primarily for his landscapes of American scenes. He also did portraits, etchings, lithographs, murals and book illustrations. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he refused to isolate technique from subject matter, and incorporated his interest in human life and his optimism about humanity into his paintings.

Ernest Fiene was born in 1894. He gained is academic training at numerous art schools in New York City, including the National Academy of Design (1914 - 1918), the Beaux Arts Insititue (1916-1918), and The Art Students League in 1923. Six years later, Fiene left for a tour of Europe. While he was in Paris, he attended L'Academie de La Grane Chaumiere. After returning from France, Fiene began teaching at the Westchester County Center. In 1932 he returned to Europe and headed to Florence, Italy were he would learned the art of fresco painting.

Upon returning to the U.S. Fiene was awarded a post office mural commission titled Paul Rever as an Industrialist in Cantor, Massachussetts. One year later, in 1937, the artist was commissioned to do a mural in Washington D.C.

Fiene taught art at a number of school around the country, inlcluding the Colorado Springs Fine Arts (1935) Center and the Cooper Union Institute in New York (1938-1939). He was a member of the Art Students League from 1938-1964 and became a supervising faculty member at Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut.

Clara Blandick (1880-1962)
Wizard of OZ - 'Auntie Em'
Extremely Rare Autograph

The RAREST of all OZ autographs! To say her genuine autograph is RARE is an understatement.  Considerd by many collectors to be the "HOLY GRAIL" of OZ autographs. Even the major autograph dealers only come across a Clara Blandick every few years.  Her autograph is highly sought after, in particular by Oz collectors. This is the FIRST we have acquired in over 20 years.

What makes this vintage treasure even more desirable is that authenticity is unquestionable. Here is a court petition filled out in her hand and autographed by Clara Blandick.  It is from state of California and dated June 29, 1936.  Signed in fountain pen.  Document is 8.5 x 3.5, with a bold signature.  As far as we know this is the first document from Ms Blandick to appear on the market.  

Clara Blandick was a character actress who was born aboard an American ship off the coast of Hong Kong on June 4, 1880. Little is known about her early life until she became an actress. Although she appeared in 118 films, she was primarily a stage actress. Clara actually began her film career at a late age. She was 33 when she was picked for the role as Emily Mason in Mrs. Black Is Back (1914). Her next film was The Stolen Triumph (1916), after which she returned to the stage, where she seemed more comfortable. She did not make another film until the age of 48, when she appeared in Poor Aubrey (1929). By now the studios knew her to be an outstanding character actress who was adept at filling minor roles. She had only three films under her belt at this time but would appear in more than 100 over the next 20 years. Nine films in 1930 and 13 the following year showed what a talent Clara really was.

 The role that was to immortalize her, however, was the part as Auntie Em in the classic The Wizard of Oz (1939). Clara continued in films until 1950, when she appeared on the screen for the final time in Key to the City (1950). By this time Clara had been suffering from poor health for years, and retired from the screen. On Palm Sunday, April 15, 1962, Clara went to church in Hollywood, California. When she returned she wrote a note stating she could no longer endure the pain of her illness and was about to take the greatest adventure of her life. She took an overdose of sleeping tablets and pulled a plastic bag over her head, thus ending her life. She was 81 years old.

Terrific EXTREMELY RARE, 7.75 x 10.25 magazine photo of Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster, clutching a statue in evident despair, boldly signed and inscribed in ballpoint, “Best wishes to Tom Crow, Boris Karloff.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Karloff’s hand and postmarked Kensington [Karloff then lived in his homeland of Great Britain], December 13, 1966. Both items are attractively matted and framed together to an overall size of 24 x 19.5. Intersecting mailing folds to photo (which Karloff appears to have purposely avoided with his carefully placed signature), otherwise fine condition. A must for the serious horror collector! PSA/DNA COA.  Gauranteed Authenic for Life.

Signed photos of Karloff as the monster are nearly impossible to find, at best, and represent one of the pinnacles of signed photos, not for just the horror collector, but the entertainment enthusiast as well. In fact, this is the first signed Frankenstein photo we have ever offered for sale. A Boris Karloff as Frankenstein photo that was sold by a major auction house in June of 2006 , had the signature in a dark area making it partially illegible and it STILL sold for $8000! This may be the best Boris Karloff signature on a Frankenstein photo in existence. AND, with the Original mailing envelop to boot, WOW!  Truly an opportunity not to be missed

"Dracula" - Bela Lugosi

Dracula (Universal, 1931). Still (7" X 9"). Horror.
Vintage black and white, single weight, glossy still. Following Lon Chaney's sudden death, Carl Laemmle had to find a replacement to star in Dracula. The role finally went to Bela Lugosi, a Hungarian actor who had been portraying Bram Stoker's undead count on the stage. Lugosi made the role his own forever cementing his legacy as the screen's greatest King of the Undead! This image was used in the creation of the best lobby card in the original set and features Lugosi seducing the innocent Helen Chandler by feeding upon her blood.

Photo detail and contrast is stunning! I have never seen an original Dracula, Lugosi photo with such beautiful detail. One of the best Lugosi "Dracula" original photos you will ever see!

Excellent condition with some corner wear. Back has original Studio stamp promoting "Bela Lugosi in Dracula a Universal Release".  Also some pencil notations on back of Dracula stars, an d a couple collector stamps.

VERY RARE 60's/70's Batmobile

This is one of the most exciting  Batmobiles ever designed.  The colors, and unique characteristics are quite striking, more so then any other Batmobile we have seen (maybe other then the Piston Batmobile we have). It is battery operated and works like new! The battery compartment is clean.  It also includes the Original Box (first time we have seen this one with original box).    Box has a couple minor easily repairable tears.  It was made in Taiwan.

There are probably few examples better than this incredibly beautiful one sheet for the 1966 re-release of the Hitchcock classic “North by Northwest”.   This vintage Hollywood poster masterpiece has it all, Hitchcock on Mt Rushmore, Cary Grant’s historical “crop-duster scene”, and the masterful artwork. 
Furthermore, it is a highly scarce poster. For every one hundred 1959 one sheets, you might see one of these 1966 re-releases. .  In the past 20 years we have only seen and acquired a half sheet 1966 re-release. This is the FIRST one sheet we have ever acquired.  A truly historical and museum worthy treasure.    An incredible find for  the ultimate
collector to be exhibited in the exclusive home or office. Hitchcock himself would have been proud to own this gem!

North by Northwest (MGM, R-1966). One Sheet (27" X 41"). Cary Grant plays a middle-aged advertising executive who's accidentally mistaken for a government agent and is pursued across the country as he tries to fend off foreign spies. This reissue poster is often preferred by collectors over the original one sheet and it features Hitchcock twice.

Abraham Lincoln & Johnson Ferrotype Campaign Token
1864

Incredible, Extremely Scarce -  1864 Lincoln & Johnson Ferrotype. Serious Lincoln collectors will appreciate the RARITY of this Historical Lincoln treasure. These "type" examples of a round, bearded 1864 Lincoln & Johnson ferro are much scarcer than the 1860 versions with Lincoln & Hamlin.

The major auction houses like Heritage Historical Signature auctions have recorded about ten Lincoln/Hamlin campaign tokens sold over the past five years. A Lincoln/Johnson 1864 Campaign token, ONLY ONE! And, that one is not even as rare as this token which has the "bearded Lincoln" image but has printed on the token "FOR PRESIDENT 1864" then on the ferrotype image "A. Lincoln" and on the reverse,  "FOR VICE PRESIDENT 1864" , then on the image “A. Johnson”.  The single 1864 campaign token  that appeared on the market about 4 years ago did NOT have "FOR PRESIDENT” printed on it and it only had “Lincoln” without the first initial.   This may be one of the very few of it’s kind in existence!

And, it is in amazing condition!  NOTE: None of the typical image corrosion, scratches, pieces missing you normally see on these Lincoln campaign tokens.  

UPDATE: NOT ONLY Amazing Condition, but possibly the BEST Condition Lincoln/Johnson campaign token in existence!  Just remarkable. The Lincoln image is just Perfect!  The Johnson has the slightest couple needle specs. It literally looks as though it had been put away for the past 150 years and accumulated dust around the edges of the token.

Condition: Has a couple touch up areas and a couple paint chips.  A professional cleaning would place this magnificent piece in to museum quality territory.

After three years and several customers asking, we have finally acquired seven lobby cards from this historic classic. A once in a lifetime opportunity.No introduction is necessary here. One of the most beloved classics of all time! For the past several years it has become an annual Christmas event. Millions watch it every year and can't wait until next year when they can see it again. To this day the only other comparable classic to command such annual devotion is "The Wizard of Oz" . Not even "Gone with the Wind" has resulted in the demand and remarkable global popularity as these two classics.  And some may argue that not even OZ hits the emotional cord as powerful as A Wonderful Life.

**The Title Card is the most coveted card of a lobby card set because of the special artwork and credits. This is only the second time we have had this card in 20 years.

Here is an Original lobby card movie poster used to promote the original showing of this epic holiday classic back in 1946. Before the days of monopolized movie theatres (i.e. Showcase Cinemas) lobby cards were a very important promotional medium to entice theatre goers with scenes of upcoming movies. Eight were produced in a set (seven scene cards and  one title card) and were displayed in an illuminated showcase so people could get a teaser of the movie.

Original Lobby cards are 11x14” and made of a heavier paper (then one sheets). This card is in Excellent + condition. Except Some minor professional repairs including filled-in corner pinholes, and minor border repairs. Has also been professionally cleaned.  The colors are extremely vivid and the vintage artwork is stunning. 

It has been over three years since we have been able to acquire a lobby card from this  major classic title. We were recently fortunate enough to find this and SEVEN other original lobby cards, including the TITLE CARD!!!
