It is on a rare occasion we acquire one of these 1949 re-release OZ lobby cards. We always believed they were superior to the original 1939 cards, the color, artwork , graphics are just spectacular. For many years we thought these 49 lobby cards were our little secret. That has changed in the past couple years. This card sold in March 2008 for $7800!! Now confirming even more desirable then the original 1939 cards. Our little secret was no longer. The rest of the collecting world apparently discovered these extraordinary treasures.

Here we are offering the best card of the set, "Wicked Witch Behind Tree" . You know the scene. A BEAUTY! And, is was INDEED, THE card that sold for over $4200 at Heritage in July 2006. And NOW, $7800 in March 2008. WHY you ask? In addition to the superior artwork, color and graphics of this 1949 lobby card set, there were a few cards that had scenes which were NOT included in the original 1939 or 1955 sets. In particular, this "Witch" scene. Some speculate she was not included in the original 1939 lobby card set because the studio wanted to keep her appearance a secret, hence more shock value. Either way it is one of the reasons this set has become even MORE popular then the original 1939 set. It usually takes us several years to find ONE of these 1949 Oz cards. About a year ago. we were fortunate to acquire FIVE of these magnificent pieces of Hollywood History. But several months ago we sold most of them including this prized "Wicked Witch" card. However, we surprisingly we just acquired this card from another collector (when we expected it to be MANY years before we would have such an opportunity).. Grab this one or wait about 4-5 years for us to find another. This is only the second time in 20+ years of collecting we have acquired this particular, and most valuable card.  .  The ONLY "Wizard of OZ" lobby card to feature the Wicked Witch. A prize in any collection !.

Condition is excellent.  There were some very minor touch up for pinholes at middletop border and a light scratch in the middle of card in grass area. and that was it. No repairs to borders or cleaning. We  kept the minor repairs to just those tiny areas as the card was in great shape and didn't need anything major.

And, if the trend for these lobby cards continues someone will have in a few years a card approaching (or exceeding) a value of $10,000.

"The War of the Worlds", 1953

Maybe in the top five of the most important Sci-Fi movies of all time, “War of the Worlds” is unquestionably an icon in the Sci-Fi movie category.   This Window card is not only stunning in its artwork and design but a true piece of Hollywood history.  The first we have ever acquired.

The War of the Worlds (Paramount, 1953). Window Card (14" X 18.25").
With the iconic artwork of the alien hand reaching down from the heavens, this window card is one of the prize items for serious sci-fi fans. H.G. Wells' brilliant 1898 novel is the basis for this excellent film directed by Byron Haskin and featuring the fantastic, Academy Award winning special effects of George Pal. Gene Barry, Ann Robinson, and Les Tremayne co-star, with Cedric Hardwicke providing the voice over commentary. The card has been trimmed by 3.75" in the top blank imprint area (as have most window cards), pinholes in the borders, and a horizontal crease. That said, a stunning and historical piece of Hollywood history!

"Der Fuhrer's Face" 

This is a really genuine piece of animation history.  An original 1942 Disney cel of Donald Duck for the WWII short "Der Fuhrer's Face".  An exceptionally colorful image of Donald.  Many of these mats that were signed by Walt Disney had the original cel removed at some point.  A major autograph auction house recently sold a signed matt with a reproduced photo of this cell for $3000.  While Original Disney signed cells often realize in excess of $10,000.  For example, a Disney signed cel from "Lady and the Tramp" just sold for $17,000 (Feb 9, 2011).

 A cel, is painted on a separate sheet of plastic celluloid from the background.   This image was originally used in the production of the wartime short "Der Fuhrer's Face" .  It has the Courvoisier label on the reverse.  Walt Disney hired Courvoisier in 1937 to produce his animated cells.  Publicity cels are cels that are created for publicity purposes-- as gifts to important people in the distribution and publicity area. Walt Disney has Autographed the mat to the lower right of the cell in bold red artist pencil. An amazing perfect Large authentic signature, over 6" wide!! (see image below with quarter for size perspective). Also, has the red 'Original WDP' ink stamp

The back of the frame is still sealed and although paper has become aged and brittle, has not been removed for several decades.  Also, note the original Courvoisier label on the reverse indentifying this as an original cell actually used in the production of  "Der Fuhrer's Face" (the ink handwriting of the title on the label has faded but can still make it out).

Vintage Autographed Photo to WWI General

Absolutely stunning, beautiful 7' x 10 1/4" Harris and Ewing signed photograph of Theodore Roosevelt dated January 19, 1911, and inscribed "To Captain Johnson Hagood, with its best wishes of Theodore Roosevelt, Jan 19th 1911".  Hagood would later command a brigade in WWI and rise ot the rank of Majoe General. 

Photo is a large 7x10 1/4", not the typical 4x6" photos usually found from Roosevelt. The image is sharp and crisp. It is on matt (lightly and could easily be removed) with Hagood's signature on the back.  One of the nicest we've ever seen!

Conway's stamp on the digital image is of course NOT on the original photo.

Here is a very scarce 1939 re-release Stone Litho one sheet for this very early John Wayne classic.  Not only is the 1939 release a far superior artistically accomplished poster then the 1935 original release one sheet, but the 1939 re-release is much scarcer. 

After John Wayne's huge success in "Stagecoach" in 1939, Monogram Pictures re-released all of his mid-1930s Monogram westerns, and created all new one-sheets for those re-releases. In almost all cases, these 1939 re-release posters are quite scarce and extremely difficult to obtain!   That said, just look at the artwork for this gorgeous Hollywood treasure!  Very good-excellent condition and has been professionally linen backed.  With touch up to the fold lines'  Just Gorgeous!

Robert N. Bradbury romantic action cowboy western starring John Wayne, Lucile Browne, LeRoy Mason, Fern Emmett, George 'Gabby' Hayes, and Jay Wilsey

Between 1933 and 1935 a young John Wayne starred in sixteen low budget Westerns for Lone Star, a division of the poverty row Monogram studio. Posters for these films have always been the hardest to find for Wayne and Western collectors alike and this stone litho 1939 re-release one-sheet being one of the scarcest ( and by far much more beautiful then the 1935 release one sheet).  In this film Wayne turns in one of his best early performances. One of the fun things about this move was the scene in the film where Indians, not the cavalry, arrive on horseback to rescue Wayne and save the day!

The Telegraph Trail (Warner Brothers, 1933). Insert (14" X 36").
Fantastic graphics adorn this early John Wayne B Western that cast the star as a cavalry scout that has to put a stop to the sabotage of the West's first telegraph system. Prior to professional restoration, this insert had fold wear, a tear at the center fold, a small chip at the left border, another small one in Wayne's left eye and in the lower right, and a diagonal cut at the top. It has a small surface abrasion in the lower right that occurred after restoration. This is one of the finest images of Wayne out there. Fine on Paper

Here it is !  The title card I've waited 30 years to acquire.  This card is so rare it is estimated that for every 10-15 one sheets that appear on the market for this film, ONLY ONE Title Card surfaces for collectors to have a shot at acquiring.   For whatever reason the lobby cards for this film are highly scarce, and the title card even more so. As a matter of fact the largest movie poster auction house in the country has NEVER had a title card for sale.

There are so many reasons I love this title card.  The fact George Reeves was the quintessential Superman is obvious, But in addition, the colors, graphics and artwork are just spectacular.  And, this particular card is in quite exceptional condition with no holes, tears, stains or other damage. Only the slightest signs of use and vintage toning, just what you’d expect to see on an ORIGINAL lobby card from this era.   And, the colors are about as bright and spectacular as you will ever see!

This is the only one we have acquired in 30 years of collecting and only one of a handful we have ever seen for sale.  A stunning piece of Hollywood History!  And a priceless acquisition for any Superman or George Reeves fan/collector!

This window card is in very good condition. Has some darkening on border, but great bright colors, NOT faded like others we have seen. Note the top has NOT been trimmed as most window cards are. In this very successful sequel to Creature from the Black Lagoon, John Agar stars as Professor Clete Ferguson who helps to capture the Creature and brings it to a public aquarium for observation, a disastrous move! The "Gill-Man" becomes infatuated with another scientist, Helen (Lori Nelson), kidnaps her, and goes on a rampage through the city. Fun stuff for devoted monster fans. The title card with its Reynold Brown artwork is in excellent condition with minor border wear.

Most Desirable European Version

This is an original closed circuit poster from this most celebrated of fights. It was used to promote the fight to Europeans and if you are familiar with the US Poster, then you already know this is a superior poster with great images of both Ali & Foreman.  The US version only had head shots against a green background.  It is also FAR more rare then the US poster and is rarely (if ever) offered on the market.  The is the first we have ever seen in 25 years of collecting. 

The poster features bold yellow, red and black color. It's in excellent condition. There some light old staining to right side . . This is only visible on very close inspection. Ali & Foreman can be seen in fighting poses. The poster is protected in a black frame and has been professionally dry mounted on foam board. The frame is in very good condition.  A beautiful vintage poster that would enhance any collection.  Size of poster is 14x22" and about 18x26" framed.  It looks amazing!

Don King’s ambitious promotional plan came to fruition when he successfully negotiated with Zaire's president Mobutu Sésé Seko to hold the anticipated contest in Zaire. On the 30th October 1974 World Heavyweight Champion Foreman met Ali in Kinshasa. Ali had told his fans that he had a secret plan for Foreman. By the second round this plan was evident as he began lying on the ropes and letting Foreman punch him, without any attempt to fight back. This later became known as the famous rope-a-dope tactic. The savvy challenger allowed the powerful Foreman to effectively punch himself out in the blistering heat. With his shots either deflected or missing outright Foreman struggled to land a clear blow on Ali. The Champion visibly began to fade as the fight wore on and was staggered by shots in the fourth and fifth sessions. Finally in the eighth round, Ali landed the final combination to the drained Foreman - a left hook that brought Foreman's head up into position so that he could drill him with a hard right to the face. Foreman staggered, then twirled across half the ring before landing on his back. Ali was Champion of the World once more! It had been a tactical triumph of epic proportions.

JUST ACQUIRED: 

Once in a while I come across a historical piece of memorabilia that is so extraordinary that NOT acquiring it is unthinkable, even if it sends me back financially.  The voice in my head says “this is exactly the quality piece my customers have a serious interest in”.   So, even though it is a piece I love and probably belongs in a museum, I want my customers to know I am out there searching for the most incredible vintage Hollywood memorabilia and artifacts. Hence, when an astonishing, only-one-of-its-kind item surfaces on the market I am hopefully in a position to acquire it (and not hear about it weeks later in the “auction results" listings). .  

That scenario happened recently when I acquired an intimate handwritten love letter from Judy Garland to Frank Sinatra.   Not only is the handwriting unmistakably Judy Garland’s, but the signature is dead on from 1949 (when She had her first affair with Frank Sinatra).  And,  the original envelop the letter came in has “Frank Sinatra” on the envelop AGAIN in Ms Garland’s unmistakably, very distinctive handwriting.

To Frank Sinatra on embossed Judy Garland stationary: "Darling, My sudden departure is a complete surprise to me, and I'm deeply disapointed (sic) to have to miss our Monday & Tuesday date. However its imperative that I reach Boston by Sunday. I shall be at the Ritz-Carlton either under Mrs. Vincente Minnelli or in care of Carlton Alsop. You said today that you'd been negligent. But darling - that's so unimportant compared to the great amount of happiness you've given me. I shant forget the hours weve (sic) spent together - ever! I'll let you know how everything goes on this trip. In the meantime - take good care of yourself - be happy and have lots of fun and laughs. and for Gods sake - keep those wheels in your lil ole head down to the minimum. Drop me a line if you can because it will cheer me up a great deal. I hope to talk to you tommorow (sic) - but I wanted to write this in case we miss connections. Even if we do reach one another - I'll send it anyway. Its getting late - so Im gonna wash up, get my money, etc. Goodbye my darling - I hope we see each other soon. Please dont forget about me. Think about me because I shall be thinking of you always, Judy."  On Judy Garland's stationary with original envelope with Frank Sinatra written on envelop in Garland's hand. Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra remained good friends until her death in 1969.

On two occasions the two legendary singers were romantically involved. The first time was in 1949. Judy Garland was recovering from a nervous breakdown and the two went on a romantic rendezvous in the Hamptons. Garland was still married to Vincente Minnelli. The second was during one of many separations from Garland's third husband, Sid Luft in 1955. Given the reference to being registered as Mrs. Vincent Minnelli, it is justified to assume that this letter was written C. 1949 following the Hamptons rendezvous. Carlton Alsop who is also referenced in the letter was a radio & film producer and radio announcer who in 1947 married Sylvia Sidney. Carlton Alsop was a good friend and staunch supporter of Judy Garland throughout her life. See: Judy's Singing Again by Carlton Alsop. Photoplay, Nov. 1949. "Drop me a line if you can because it will cheer me up a great deal" seems significant in that Garland was recovering from a breakdown. Note word "shant" and "for God's sake" familiar to anyone who ever seen Judy Garland interviewed will remember that she frequently used these expressions.

A Special Note on Authenticity.  Many of you have read some of the articles I have written on autograph and collectibles authenticity.    The most recent article addressed the issue of “credible” dealer certificates of authenticity.  You can read it here on this web site.   You will note I stressed the importance of a “standard” when it comes to authenticating autographs.  In the current state of the autograph collecting community, there are several services. Some reputable and others less reputable.   And, the only way to understand the difference is sheer experience. Meanwhile, the majority of the industry seems to have settled today on PSA or JSA as the most reliable services.

However, there is often much discussion about WHO within these organizations are actually doing the certifications and their level of expertise since the letters of authenticity from both do NOT identify a certification specialist.   That being said, it was decided this item deserved much more then an anonymous certification from someone who may not have a high level of expertise with Judy Garland. Therefore, I contacted someone who probably has more expertise with Judy Garland’s autograph and handwriting then anyone in the autograph industry. She is the author of the Judy Garland Signature Study that appeared in Autograph Collector Magazine in 2008.  It is by far the most accurate and in-depth study ever done on this entertainment icon. We called him Duke, and he was every bit the giant off screen he was on. Everything about him - his stature, his style, his convictions-conveyed enduring strength, and no one who observed, his struggle in those final days could doubt that strength was real. To many he was the consummate symbol of America. To others his onscreen presence will forever be unsurpassed. Whatever, you think of the Duke, we have since not seen anyone quite like him and most likely never will.

When he died on June 11, 1979 a Tokyo newspaper ran the headline, "Mr. America passes on."
"There's right and there's wrong," Duke said in THE ALAMO (1960). "You gotta do one or the other. You do the one and you're living. You do the other and you may be walking around but in reality you're dead." Duke Wayne symbolized just this, he could have left no greater legacy.

We are excited to offer this once in a lifetime opportunity. A fabulous historical document relating to one of the most significant movies in The Duke's illustrious career. Offered here is a three-page document, 8.5" x 11", 20th Century Fox letterhead, May 29, 1959. A formal amendment document in which the Fox agrees to postpone the filming of "North to Alaska" (referred to as "The Alaskans") so that Wayne could produce and star in the western classic "The Alamo". The document reads, in part: "The starting date for the motion picture tentatively entitled 'The Alaskans' was established as April 6, 1959...That said starting date shall be and the same is hereby postponed...In connection with said postponement it is agreed that you are contemplating the rendition of your services in connection with a motion picture entitled 'The Alamo'." Wayne would indeed follow through with the filming of "The Alamo", earning his first Oscar nomination for directing the film. The document is handsomely signed by Wayne on the final page in blue ink, with the signature projecting a strong "9-10" appearance. Some moderate toning to the document and light fading to the typing, none of which affects Wayne's signature or the document's overall fine appearance. Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication (JSA).

For any collector of historical vintage Hollywood, this is a prize you may regret letting get away. For John Wayne collectors, letting this slip away may affect your sleep for many years to come. Rare and Important Signed Autographed Letter

Incredible Genuine Autographed letter by John Wayne dated November 3, 1976.   John Wayne often had secretaries sign mostly photos for him. However, we have conducted extensive research on this letter and the signature and have concluded this is absolutely his authentic signature.  In addition, this letter is on his heavy personal stationary. Also the letter comes with the original envelop also post dated November 5, 1976 and has "John Wayne" raised embossed on it.   We have never seen a letter from him come in the original post dated, personal stationary envelop in 30 years of collecting.

That said, what makes this an even more extraordinary letter is the very personal content where he mentions his poor health and also Frank Sinatra.  It has often been printed that John Wayne and Frank Sinatra did not have much of a relationship or even a strained relationship after John Wayne punched out Sinatra’s bodyguard in a Las Vegas hotel.  However , this letter contradicts those rumors.

The letter comes from the estate of an Admiral who was personal friends with John Wayne.   A true piece of Hollywood history from the hand of one of its most immortal icons.  Deserving of a museum!  Guaranteed Authentic for Life.

Maybe success with his first battle with cancer caused him to have a new perspective on life. Here is an Original lobby card movie poster used to promote the original showing of this epic holiday classic back in 1946. Before the days of monopolized movie theatres (i.e. Showcase Cinemas) lobby cards were a very important promotional medium to entice theatre goers with scenes of upcoming movies. Eight were produced in a set (seven scene cards and one title card) and were displayed in an illuminated showcase so people could get a teaser of the movie.

Original Lobby cards are 11x14” and made of a heavier paper (then one sheets). This card is in Excellent + condition. Some minor professional repairs including filled-in corner pinholes, and minor border repairs. The colors are extremely vivid and the vintage artwork is stunning. You are highly unlikely to find another in such spectacular condition!

It has been over three years since we have been able to acquire a lobby card from this major classic title. We were recently fortunate enough to find this and SEVEN other original lobby cards, including the TITLE CARD!!!

Only the second time in 30 years we have acquired this highly desirable Title Card

Fantastic and scarce original title card for James Stewart's most adored classic. Excellent + Condition!   Of all the advertsiing paper for this title, the Title card has always been my favorite because the artwork is superior to the other posters such as the one sheet, half sheet, etc.  Just great images of Stewart sittting with Harvey along with all the cast members looking on in horror!

Harvey (Universal International, 1950). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14"). James Stewart plays Elwood P. Dowd, a wealthy and eccentric drunk who sees an imaginary rabbit, a claim that raises the eyebrows of local townspeople. Although his sister (Josephine Hull, in an Oscar-winning turn) occasionally sees him too, Stewart's imaginary friend begins to interfere with her plan to find a suitable husband for her daughter.

Amazing genuine vintage Harry Houdini autograph in dark vintage fountain pen “Best wishes Harry Houdini May 16/04” (year is either 1904 or 1909).   Also, what makes this an exceptional Houdini piece is he did NOT personalize it to someone , PLUS he signed his FULL NAME, not just Houdini as it often seen on autographed photos and albums.   And, this signature is about the best we have ever seen, a large, dark bold beautiful specimen.  Over 4" long. We would rate this signature a 10 out of 10.

BUT, what makes this piece even more incredible is it is framed with an ORIGINAL Harry Houdini Program from his 1926-27 season. However, his life would be cut short in late 1926.  The program is in very good condition with obvious wear and fragile on the spine.  The front and back cover has become detached from the rest of program.  The program is filled with photos of Houdini in some movie roles, speaking to the NY Police Dept and other interesting events Houdni attended during the early-mid 1920's.  The back cover even promotes him as "ON TOUR - Harry Houdini - The World's Greatest Entertainer".  This program was given out during his events.

*NOTE: There are sellers online selling reproduction prints of the front cover of this program for $20.  AN original program if for sale would sell for several hundred dollars.

The autograph is an incredible 4" long, on a page from an old autograph album. The page is about 5 x 8", so gives you an idea how large and bold the signature is.  It was apparently kept inside the autograph album for the past 90-100+ years, which is why the condition is so extraordinary. .

It was originally In a 18 x 23" gold frame. However, I removed both the program and autograph for inspection.  If you want the frame I can include it

Here is one of the most highly desired and Very Scarce horror titles to appear on the market.  With two of the three primary horror legends, Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney. You can just hear collectors drool when any original Frankenstein paper like this becomes available.  Of all the posters for this title, the Window Card is the most elusive only appearing on the market a handful of times over the last 20 years.  While the largest movie poster auction house has sold three one sheets, they have only sold one window card which had extensive restoration including in-painting  in the Title.  The artwork on this window card is incredible, the two legendary monsters battling with the unforgettable Maria Ouspenskaya looking on.

This window card is in used condition with fold line, border tears and tape on back.  Also, the blank top and bottom borders have been trimmed.  That said the image area is in very good condition.  This window card has been professionally paperbacked by the best in the business. As you can see in the image it has excess backing outside the window card borders which adds extra protection to the fragile borders. The paper backing is of the highest quality.  Rising Museum Matboard is the natural choice when the highest levels of conservation is required for the protection and preservation of artwork. Made with 100% cotton fibers and the purest form of cellulose. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (Universal, 1943). Window Card (14" X 22"). Two of the mightiest monsters in the Universal Horror franchise met for the first time in this thrill-filled extravaganza. Bela Lugosi finally donned the Frankenstein makeup he had declined years before, and Lon Chaney Jr. reprised his role as Larry Talbot, making this one of the favorite films in this classic series.

This lead to a string of multi-monster movies, including House of Frankenstein (1944) and House of Dracula (1945), before the genre came to a close in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, however, is considered by many to be the finest of the "team-up" films ever made. Written by Curt Siodmak, who had first brought the Wolf Man to life several years earlier, the film starred Bela Lugosi as the Frankenstein Monster, Lon Chaney Jr. as the lycanthropic Larry Talbot, Maria Ouspenskaya as Maleva the Gypsy woman and the scene stealer from the original “Wolfman”.. It is an engaging thrill-ride from beginning to end. Offered here is a beautiful example of the highly desirable window card, showing the principal players in all their gruesome glory.

Original 1952 Signed Contract

Here is a piece of entertainment history. A 1952 William Morris Agency contract signed by their famous client Frank Sinatra, his Genuine signature, NOT a proxy as with many of his letters and some insignificant contracts.  This was for an appearance at the Chez Paree in Montreal, Canada. The contract was to perform at the club for a period of ten days beginning on February 6, 1953 (58 years ago).    In addition, attached to the contract is quite a significant rider/memo which states, “Please gives this copy to Frank Sinatra he will need it to cross the border”.  Also attached is a cover sheet detailing his compensation.

An incredible contract in excellent condition with all associated documents of great importance to the legendary singer in 1953, the beginning of his great comeback following his academy award role in “From Here to Eternity” released that same year.   A nice clean, well preserved document, with fantastic bold signature during the most critical juncture of his career and original rider and cover letter included indeed makes this a museum quality piece.

Frank Sinatra was also an artist and recently his paintings sold at the Jilly Rizzo auction for over $25,000 each. He also had an affection for clowns as he did a number of clown paintings which he displayed in his home. Acquired & Witnessed In Person

Recently, we were able to acquire a beautiful Frank Sinatra signed 8x10" photo that came from his stage manager (who was featured in Autograph Collector Magazine in 1998 about his relationship with Frank Sinatra and the several items he had Frank autograph).  This particular photo has a note on the back stating where it was signed in his presence by Frank Sinatra at Royal Albert Hall, in the UK. The back note was signed by the stage manager .  You die hard Sinatra collectors probably know who he is.  Provenance that far exceeds the opinion of any experts.  I even contacted the stage manager recently and he responded via email  , “It is legit, The photo was signed backstage at Royal Albert Hall, in the UK.”.

We recently acquired a number of items that came from the Eileen Barton estate. This particular piece is detailed in item #1 below. A magnificent vintage autographed Frank Sinatra photo. 

1. Signed glossy 8x10 of Frank Sinatra around the late 1940’s/ early 1950’s. Inscribed in black fountain pen ink: “To Dear Eileen in appreciation for your admiration with fondest regards Frank”.  Note: The use of first name only, a very rare signature which was reserved for close friends.

Also included are other items from the Eileen Barton estate including a signed photo of her and copy of Aftra Pension fund agreement.  Also included are a few photos of her and Frank Sinatra together

Other separately sold item include a 1953 Contract and a vintage John Engstead embossed 8x10 photo of Frank Sinatra’s family (at the time). His wife Nancy; “To Eileen best of everything love & best wishes  Nancy", also son Frankie , daughter Tina and daughter Nancy have all signed.

Eileen Barton, singer: born New York 24 November 1929; died West Hollywood, California 27 June 2006.

The phrase for an unexpected guest, "If knew you were coming, I'd've baked a cake", has now passed into the language, but few would know that it originated with the singer Eileen Barton, who topped the US charts for three months with the song in 1950.

She was an excellent singer, working with Frank Sinatra, Buddy Greco and Nat "King" Cole, but, despite her father's being a successful music publisher, she never recorded enough strong original material and she will be best remembered for her cheerful novelty success.

Eileen Barton was born in Brooklyn in 1924 to Benny and Elsie Barton, who had a song-and-dance act in vaudeville. As soon as she could speak, her parents developed a routine for the song "Ain't Misbehavin' ", which led to her working two shows a day at the Palace Theatre on Broadway. When she was seven, she was featured as the mischievous child, Jolly, on Milton Berle's radio show for CBS and she appeared in the film Show for Sale (1937) as Eileen "Jolly" Barton. In 1941, she was in the chorus for the Broadway musical Best Foot Forward, and then toured in Angels in the Wings with Elaine Stritch.

In 1943, Ben Barton passed Frank Sinatra an exceptional new song, "Close to You", and suggested that Sinatra finance a publishing company with him in charge. Over the years, Barton Music published many of Sinatra's hits including "Nancy with the Laughing Face" and his signature tune "Put Your Dreams Away". Ben Barton's association with Sinatra helped Eileen's career, as she appeared on his Paramount shows in New York in 1944, and often sang with him on television and radio. They appeared together on the radio show Lucky Strike Presents Your Hit Parade, and several duets with Sinatra survive including "Together" and "Come Out Wherever You Are".

Bob Merrill, who was to write "How Much is That Doggie in the Window" and many Guy Mitchell hits, gave her "If I Knew You Were Comin', I'd've Baked a Cake". The record soared to the top of the charts and she beat off competition from Georgia Gibbs and Ethel Merman, but the best-selling versions in the UK were by Gracie Fields and Eve Young.

Barton followed her hit with "Dixieland Ball, "May I Take Two Giant Steps", "You Brought a New Kind of Love for Me" and "En-Thus-E-Uz-E-As-M (Enthusiasm)", but she didn't repeat that success. In 1951, she covered Johnnie Ray's "Cry" and did reasonably well in 1953 with "Sway (Quien Sera)"and "Pretend".

As with many singers, her career faltered with the advent of rock'n'roll. In 1962 she appeared in a dire Jayne Mansfield film, Promises! Promises! Shortly before she died, she assisted with a 2-CD set of her recordings.

Frank Morgan (June 1, 1890 – September 18, 1949) was an American character actor best known for his portrayal of the title character in the film The Wizard of Oz.

Born Francis Phillip Wuppermann in New York City to the wealthy family which distributed Angostura bitters, he attended Cornell University where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He then followed his older brother Ralph Morgan into show business, first on the Broadway stage and then into movies. His first film was The Suspect in 1916. His career expanded when talkies began, his most stereotypical role being that of a befuddled but good-hearted middle-aged man. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1934's The Affairs of Cellini, where he played the cuckolded Duke of Florence and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1942's Tortilla Flat, where he played a simple Hispanic man.

Morgan's most famous performance was in The Wizard of Oz (1939), in which he played the carnival huckster "Professor Marvel", the gatekeeper of the Emerald City, the driver of the carriage drawn by "The Horse of a Different Color", the armed guard leading to the wizard's hall, and the Wizard himself. Like Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West, his characters only appear on-screen for a few minutes in total, but they are show-stoppers. He was so popular that MGM gave him a lifetime contract. Other movies of note include The Shop Around the Corner, The Human Comedy, The Mortal Storm, The White Cliffs of Dover and his last movie, Key to the City, which was released after his death, in Beverly Hills, California. He also recorded a number of children's records, including the popular Gossamer Wump, released in 1949 by Capitol Records.

Like most character actors of the studio era Frank Morgan had numerous roles in many motion pictures. One of his last roles was as a key supporting player in The Stratton Story, a true story about a ballplayer (played by James Stewart) who makes a comeback after losing a leg in a hunting accident.

Having died of a heart attack in 1949 (while filming Annie Get Your Gun), Morgan was the one major player from The Wizard of Oz who did not live to see the film become both a television fixture and an American institution. He was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1708 Vine Street.

He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1934's The Affairs of Cellini, where he played the cuckolded Duke of Florence and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1942's Tortilla Flat, where he played a simple Hispanic man.

Morgan's most famous performance was in The Wizard of Oz (1939), in which he played the carnival huckster "Professor Marvel", the gatekeeper of the Emerald City, the driver of the carriage drawn by "The Horse of a Different Color", the armed guard leading to the wizard's hall, and the Wizard himself. Like Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West, his characters only appear on-screen for a few minutes in total, but they are show-stoppers. He was so popular that MGM gave him a lifetime contract. Other movies of note include The Shop Around the Corner, The Human Comedy, The Mortal Storm, The White Cliffs of Dover and his last movie, Key to the City, which was released after his death, in Beverly Hills, California. He also recorded a number of children's records, including the popular Gossamer Wump, released in 1949 by Capitol Records.

Like most character actors of the studio era Frank Morgan had numerous roles in many motion pictures. One of his last roles was as a key supporting player in The Stratton Story, a true story about a ballplayer (played by James Stewart) who makes a comeback after losing a leg in a hunting accident.

Having died of a heart attack in 1949 (while filming Annie Get Your Gun), Morgan was the one major player from The Wizard of Oz who did not live to see the film become both a television fixture and an American institution. He was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1708 Vine Street.

OK, you don’t even have to be a seasoned collector to know the significance of this Sci-Fi Classic Masterpiece.  Paper from this title is highly sought after. And, here we are offering what is one of the best cards of the lobby card set. Here is an unusual and amazing photo that has been signed by Charles Schulz. He has also added a sketch in the clouds of Snoopy. A very rare item as we have seen a number of Schulz sketches done on white paper or board but have never seen include his artwork in such a creative manner as he has on this airplane photo.

Color 13 x 10.5 paperstock photo of a TWA jet in flight, signed and inscribed in black felt tip, “For Jim Reid with best wishes for a Merry Christmas—Charles M. Schulz,” Schulz adding a sketch of Snoopy as the “Flying Ace” and the caption, “What in the world is that?” The date “’70” has been added . According to the original owner, the inscribee was a pilot for TWA. Matted and framed to an overall size of 18 x 15. In very good condition, with minor tears to bottom edge (touching bottom of doghouse sketch).

One of the most requested vintage movie posters over the past several years, AND my personal favorite. In the past 6 years we have acquired three of these and the first two sold almost immediately. Ed Wood's movie poster for his notoriously bad film was gorgeous! The movie poster art is spectacular.  That said, Ed Woods movies, believe it or not, have a strong cult following. The Bride of the Monster being his personal “masterpiece” with the immortal horror legend Bela Lugosi.  Most of you are probably aware that Ed Woods was depicted by Johnny Depp in the academy award winning 1994 movie “Ed Woods”. Martin Landau won the academy award for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi. 

This very scarce, beautiful vintage 1956 one sheet is in excellent + condition with vibrant colors (not faded as we see most of these).  Would look great linen backed. UPDATE: It now Professionally linen backed, and absolutely Gorgeous!

Bride of the Monster (Filmmakers Releasing, 1956). One Sheet (27" X 41"). One of director Ed Wood's greatest productions, this was the next to last movie filmed by Bela Lugosi, who played mad scientist Dr. Eric Vornoff. The making of this movie is well-documented in Tim Burton's Ed Wood, including the theft of the rubber octopus from Republic Studios (it was originally created for the John Wayne vehicle, Wake of the Red Witch). Unfortunately, the motor that operated the tentacles was left behind, which is painfully obvious in the final film. Nevertheless, this is classic Ed Wood, and features two of his greatest stars, Lugosi and former Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson (who was the subject of Lugosi's oft-quoted line, "Don't mind Lobo. He's as harmless as a kitchen"). Paper from the majority of Ed Wood's movies is extremely scarce, and highly sought after by those who appreciate the best in "bad" cinema. This particular example shows the typical pinholes in the corners, a small corner chip in the lower left, light edge wear, and light fold wear with some crossfold separation. Notwithstanding these minor flaws, this is a very attractive and very desirable poster that will be the pride of any collection of 1950s cult cinema

Some Trivia:
According to Paul Marco, Edward D. Wood Jr. thought that Bela Lugosi's memory might not be very good so for Lugosi's huge speech in Bride of the Monster, Wood had the prop man make cue cards. Lugosi, upset, insisted he didn't need cue cards and he would "memorize it." Wood still insisted on the cue cards telling Lugosi, "We have to be safe." Bela Lugosi went to Paul Marco for help. He had Marco promise not to show him the cue cards during the scene. Paul Marco held the cards at his side the whole time and Lugosi never looked over once. Bela Lugosi gave a sensational performance and the whole crew got up and applauded

Terrific EXTREMELY RARE, 7.75 x 10.25 magazine photo of Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster, clutching a statue in evident despair, boldly signed and inscribed in ballpoint, “Best wishes to Tom Crow, Boris Karloff.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Karloff’s hand and postmarked Kensington [Karloff then lived in his homeland of Great Britain], December 13, 1966. Both items are attractively matted and framed together to an overall size of 24 x 19.5. Intersecting mailing folds to photo (which Karloff appears to have purposely avoided with his carefully placed signature), otherwise fine condition. A must for the serious horror collector! Signed photos of Karloff as the monster are nearly impossible to find, at best, and represent one of the pinnacles of signed photos, not for just the horror collector, but the entertainment enthusiast as well. In fact, this is the first signed Frankenstein photo we have ever offered for sale. A Boris Karloff as Frankenstein photo that was sold by a major auction house in June of 2006 , had the signature in a dark area making it partially illegible and it STILL sold for $8000! This may be the best Boris Karloff signature on a Frankenstein photo in existence. AND, with the Original mailing envelop to boot, WOW! Truly an opportunity not to be missed

The person I bought from contacted Alex who didn't live far from him in CA.  My source met with Alex and bought additional vintage Horror memorabilia from him.   At one meeting my source brought this photo to show Alex and Alex recounted exactly where and when Lugosi signed this photo for him.  Written provenance of this meeting from my source is included.

This is one of the most exciting Batmobiles ever designed. The colors, and unique characteristics are quite striking, more so then any other Batmobile we have seen (maybe other then the Piston Batmobile we have). It is battery operated and works like new! The battery compartment is clean. It also includes the Original Box (first time we have seen this one with original box). Box has a couple minor easily repairable tears. It was made in Taiwan.

1918 Original Photo BABE RUTH Red Sox WORLD SERIES

Extremely scarce photo from the most prized period in Baseball and Babe Ruth History, as a Red Sox pitcher.  Amazing detail and clarity on the vintage sports treasure!

A Vintage 1918 ORIGINAL Photograph depicting Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox as he prepares for Game 1 of the 1918 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. The kid from Baltimore was already regarded as the league’s best left-hander getting the assignment to start the opener at Wrigley Field. But it was also that season of 1918 when he emerged as the most powerful slugger in the dead-ball era, splitting his time as a regular in the Red Sox line-up, hitting a league-leading 11 home runs !

This photograph of Ruth captured in a pitching pose, warming up along the Wrigley Field sidelines has been cropped to its current dimensions for publication use over the years measuring approximately 6” x 7”. There are editorial news inks shading the background of the head portion which was done to achieve contrast in newsprint publication when a close-up of Ruth’s face was needed by a photo editor. Reverse has some editorial and publication notes as well as several publication date stamps including the one from SEP 05 1918 when Game 1 of the Fall Classic was played. It remains a RARE period 1st generation TYPE I photograph of Ruth in one of his most dominant performances in the World Series: pitching a 1-0 complete game shutout which set up the Red Sox to their eventual Championship in 1918. It would mark the last World Series the Red Sox would win for 86-years as they would do the unthinkable, selling him to the Yankees – and hence “The Birth of the Curse” !

ORIGINAL Vintage 1928 BABE RUTH Home Run Candy WRAPPER

Here is a true, genuine piece of Sports History! VERY RARE Original Vintage 1928 Babe Ruth “Home Run" Wrapper featuring the Bambino. One of the short-lived candy products that the Babe backed in an attempt to combat the Curtis Candy Co. and their "Baby Ruth" candy bars (Babe unsuccessfully sued the Curtiss company for the use of what he felt was an infringement of his name). Ask any seasoned memorabilia collector or prominent sports auction house and they will tell you – ALL Babe Ruth candy bar wrappers in any condition are RARE. Do not be fooled. (WARNING - beware of the countless cheap reproductions being offered on paper that are deceptively made to look old).

The Ruth wax wrapper was virtually unknown to the hobby until the late 80’s when a small find of 14 wrappers made its way into the hobby. Several others including the previously ‘lone’ specimen owned by legendary collector, the late-Barry Halper’s have made its way to auction since. This offered example is special in that it is the RARER “variation” of the one that is seen in auctions from time to time. The difference is distinctive, most noticeable the absence of the text around the wide outer border.

This 5” x 7-3/8” wrapper is all-original. It is in about very good to excellent in condition with the usual fold lines and crinkling associated with such a piece, Overall the colors are solid and the specimen displays in a condition far better than its technical grade. As with all items, we sell, it is 100% Guaranteed Vintage and Original. This is a quality Ruthian keepsake and a real tough variation in ANY condition !

There are probably few examples better than this incredibly beautiful one sheet for the 1966 re-release of the Hitchcock classic “North by Northwest”. This vintage Hollywood poster masterpiece has it all, Hitchcock on Mt Rushmore, Cary Grant’s historical “crop-duster scene”, and the masterful artwork.
Furthermore, it is a highly scarce poster. For every one hundred 1959 one sheets, you might see one of these 1966 re-releases. . In the past 20 years we have only seen and acquired a half sheet 1966 re-release. This is the FIRST one sheet we have ever acquired. A truly historical and museum worthy treasure. Cary Grant plays a middle-aged advertising executive who's accidentally mistaken for a government agent and is pursued across the country as he tries to fend off foreign spies. This reissue poster is often preferred by collectors over the original one sheet and it features Hitchcock twice.

A truly amazing, museum quality piece of history. It has been several years since we have acquired a significant historical document of this magnitude. Moreover, this is probably the most important document we have ever acquired due to it's rarity and historical content

Particularly rare partly-printed vellum war-dated DS as president, one page, 15.25 x 14, November 12, 1861. Lincoln appoints Daniel B. Hodgsdon to the position of “Third Lieutenant in the Revenue Service of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Lincoln, and countersigned by Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase. Heavy intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, moderately heavy overall rippling, handwritten portions of document light, but mostly legible, and some light soiling and foxing, mainly to the edges, otherwise very good condition. Lincoln’s signature remains very nice and relatively strong. .

What also makes this particular Lincoln appointment extraordinary is it is one of the more rare presidential appointments with “Abraham Lincoln” printed at the top of the document. Most appointments from this era only have “President of the United States” printed.  ALSO, it is a FULL signature “Abraham Lincoln”, not just “A. Lincoln”.

Hodgsdon’s service branch—the United States Revenue Cutter Service—was established in 1790 by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton as an armed maritime law enforcement service. Originally seen as a group of waterborne tax collectors, members of the organization served in a variety of capacities, eventually morphing into the US Coast Guard. Around the time that Lincoln signed this appointment of Hodgsdon, revenue cutters were stationed at every major seaport of the nation, and used during the war to search for smugglers, protect US ports, and assist the Navy in logistical operations. This Lincoln-signed document marked the beginning of a long and distinguished career for Hodgsdon, a native New Yorker who quickly rose through the ranks during the war, reaching captain in 1868 and spending 36 years in the service. An unusual Lincoln appointment from a forgotten seafaring agency.

In the continuing run of "meet and greets" for Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, and every monster on the Universal lot, the boys operate as mail-order private eyes to help a boxer clear his name of murder. Lou steps into the ring to face a professional boxer, and gets the invisible assist of the boxer they're trying to help. This three sheet has a delightful image of Lou as a befuddled 'Sherlock Holmes,' and Bud with his usual slow burn consternation.

After 30 years of collecting this is only the second time we have acquired the most prized lobby card from this horror-comedy classic. (and the first one sold within a few days for $2500 about 5 years ago)   The ultimate scene, Bela Lugosi uses his powers on Lou Costello. Great close-up, great colors. This card has it all! Excellent condition, has been professionally paper-backed.

This is the long sought for card # 6 from the lobby set featuring Dracula (Bela Lugosi) hypnotizing Wilbur (Lou Costello) in a key scene from a film that Reader's Digest still lists as one of the 100 Funniest Movies of All Time. This was the only time Lugosi would reprise the Dracula character in a sustained film role (1933's gag cameo in Hollywood on Parade doesn't count!). And it was the first of the funny comedy duo's meetings with Universal classic horror characters. The card has been professionally backed on masa paper and touched up beautifully and the card appears as if just printed. There were pinholes in three corners, a small tear in the top border, a mild bottom left corner bend, and a chip in the top right corner.

Extremely RARE (even MORE RARE then Meet Frankenstein lobby cards) lobby card from this very early, 1941 A&C Title. This is the first time we have seen this card in about 6 years. This is the MOST desirable card of the set. Great Close-ups, stunning color and graphics. And best scene of the movie.

Condition: Excellent. Has two 1" tears in upper left border area. A few pinholes outside of image area. Couple small pieces of tape on back from when it was matted.

You're not likely to see this card appear on the market any time soon!
