Rare Frank Sinatra's Cal Neva Lodge Lighter

This is one of the most desirable and collectible casino and Frank Sinatra related items of all. Condition - EXCELLENT! Whoever owned this piece, certainly wanted to preserve its condition as it is now being presented with almost NO lacquer wear. . Printed/engraved on lighter is "Frank SInatra's Cal Neva Lodge" . These are neat mini lighters about 1.5" x 1.75"

Frank Sinatra was known to give these lighters to friends who visited him at the lodge.

During the time this item was made, Frank Sinatra was at a very high point in his life and career and figured that it would be great to partner up with buddy Dean Martin and silent partner, Chicago mob boss, Sam "Momo" Giancana, and others to run his own casino, the Cal Neva Lodge. However, Nevada gaming commission regulations prohibited the attendance of any known criminals at any of its licensed gaming facilities. Since the FBI was watching the Cal Neva closely, they reported that mob boss Sam Giancana did visit the facility and his presence was acknowledged by Frank Sinatra. As a result, Frank Sinatra lost his gaming license for the Cal Neva. Years later, in the early 1980s, Frank would redeem himself before the Nevada gaming commission and win his license back after grueling testimony by himself, Kirk Douglas, the Los Angeles sheriff, and many others. It's interesting to note that in Frank Sinatra's testimony, he stated that he never saw Sam Giancana at the Cal Neva.

As you can see from above, this particular Cal Neva lighter from Frank Sinatra's ownership is highly collectible and desirable not because of any hype but because of its true value derived from (1) the richness of this true story; (2) the rarity of this item; (3) the condition and appearance of this item; AND (4) the fact that this was the only time in Frank Sinatra's life that he owned a casino outright, even though it was for only 2 years.

Here is one of the most highly desired and Very Scarce horror titles to appear on the market.  With two of the three primary horror legends, Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney. You can just hear collectors drool when any original Frankenstein paper like this becomes available.  Of all the posters for this title, the Window Card is the most elusive only appearing on the market a handful of times over the last 20 years.  While the largest movie poster auction house has sold three one sheets, they have only sold one window card which had extensive restoration including in-painting  in the Title.  The artwork on this window card is incredible, the two legendary monsters battling with the unforgettable Maria Ouspenskaya looking on.

This window card is in used condition and had a fold line, border tears and tape on back prior to professional restoration.  Also, the blank top and bottom borders have been trimmed.  That said the image area is in very good condition and required no restoration other then minor touch up on the fold line.  This window card has been professionally paperbacked by the best in the business. As you can see in the image it has excess backing outside the window card borders which adds extra protection to the fragile borders. However, the new owner always has the option of matting out the extra paperbacked area or trimming it off.  The paper backing is of the highest quality.  Rising Museum Matboard is the natural choice when the highest levels of conservation is required for the protection and preservation of artwork. Made with 100% cotton fibers and the purest form of cellulose. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (Universal, 1943). Window Card (14" X 22"). Two of the mightiest monsters in the Universal Horror franchise met for the first time in this thrill-filled extravaganza. Bela Lugosi finally donned the Frankenstein makeup he had declined years before, and Lon Chaney Jr. reprised his role as Larry Talbot, making this one of the favorite films in this classic series.

This immortal horror classic lead to a string of multi-monster movies, including House of Frankenstein (1944) and House of Dracula (1945), before the genre came to a close in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, however, is considered by many to be the finest of the "team-up" films ever made. Written by Curt Siodmak, who had first brought the Wolf Man to life several years earlier, the film starred Bela Lugosi as the Frankenstein Monster, Lon Chaney Jr. as the lycanthropic Larry Talbot, Maria Ouspenskaya as Maleva the Gypsy woman and the scene stealer from the original “Wolfman”.. It is an engaging thrill-ride from beginning to end. Offered here is a beautiful example of the highly desirable window card, showing the principal players in all their gruesome glory.

Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch Autographed Photo

Terrific Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch signed 8x10" photo by Margaret Hamilton.  One of the best scenes of the immortal movie.   Signed IN PERSON in 1973.  Original owner's mother did Ms Hamilton’s hair in 1973 and signed this photo for her son John.   Signed "I am waiting for John to come down the road. Best Wishes Margaret Hamilton".  Included is a letter of provenance from the recepient John who witnessed Ms Hamilton sign this photo for him (and also photos for his brother and sister) in 1973 at his mother's hair salon.   Great condition with just the slightest age toning expected for a nearly 40 year old photo.

Ms Hamilton almost always signed lengthy personal inscriptions.   She also employed an assistant to sign some of her photos which are easily detectible by the “experienced eye”.  One thing to look for is the secretary (and forgers) will only sign her name or very short inscriptions.  Unfortunately many autograph dealers sell the “secretarial” as authentic.   We have collected Oz autographs for over 25 years and are very knowledgeable of both the genuine and secretarial autographs.  

This is one the most desirable photos of Ms Hamilton. It is the same scene as the most prized lobby card from 1949 which sells for several thousand$$

Incredibly rare original Charles Schulz sketch of "Snoopy" playing golf , leaning on a putter.  This piece was drawn and autographed for LPGA player Kathy Martin, who was paired with Schulz during a pro-am tournament in San Diego in 1974.  Furthermore, he signed with his very rare and personal nickname “Sparky” , followed by his real name “Schulz”.  He seemed to stop using his nickname on sketches in the 1970’s.  This is the first authentic one we have seen.   A real piece of history!

Original signed and inscribed full-length felt tip sketch of Snoopy leaning on a golf club, with a heart springing from his chest, on the reverse of an off-white 8.75 x 12.75" gold score card sheet. Signed and inscribed, “For Kathy, my favorite partner—Sparky (Schulz)”. The original recipient was LPGA player Kathy Martin, who was paired with Schulz during a pro-am tournament in San Diego in 1974. In fine condition, with a mild overall shade of toning over sketch and signature from previous framing, and a slightly rough left edge. A fabulous full-length sketch, coupled with Schulz’s nickname usually reserved for close friends and colleagues, elevates this sketch above par. "Der Fuhrer's Face" 

This is a really genuine piece of animation history.  An original 1942 Disney cel of Donald Duck for the WWII short "Der Fuhrer's Face".  An exceptionally colorful image of Donald.  Many of these mats that were signed by Walt Disney had the original cel removed at some point.  A major autograph auction house recently sold a signed matt with a reproduced photo of this cell for $3000.  While Original Disney signed cells often realize in excess of $10,000.  For example, a Disney signed cel from "Lady and the Tramp" just sold for $17,000 (Feb 9, 2011).

 A cel, is painted on a separate sheet of plastic celluloid from the background.   This image was originally used in the production of the wartime short "Der Fuhrer's Face" .  It has the Courvoisier label on the reverse.  Walt Disney hired Courvoisier in 1937 to produce his animated cells.  Publicity cels are cels that are created for publicity purposes-- as gifts to important people in the distribution and publicity area. Walt Disney has Autographed the mat to the lower right of the cell in bold red artist pencil. An amazing perfect Large authentic signature, over 6" wide!! (see image below with quarter for size perspective). Also, has the red 'Original WDP' ink stamp

The back of the frame is still sealed and although paper has become aged and brittle, has not been removed for several decades.  Also, note the original Courvoisier label on the reverse indentifying this as an original cell actually used in the production of  "Der Fuhrer's Face" (the ink handwriting of the title on the label has faded but can still make it out).

We recently acquired a number of items that came from the Eileen Barton estate. This particular piece is detailed in item #1 below. A magnificent vintage autographed Frank Sinatra Family photo, circa 1953-55.  Imagine, toddler Frank Jr, teenager Nancy, and baby Tina.  The only Sinatra family signed photo we have ever seen in over 25 years collecting.

1. A vintage John Engstead embossed 8x10 photo of Frank Sinatra’s family (at the time). His wife Nancy; “To Eileen best of everything love & best wishes  Nancy", also son Frankie , daughter Tina and daughter Nancy have all signed.

Eileen Barton, singer: born New York 24 November 1929; died West Hollywood, California 27 June 2006.

The phrase for an unexpected guest, "If knew you were coming, I'd've baked a cake", has now passed into the language, but few would know that it originated with the singer Eileen Barton, who topped the US charts for three months with the song in 1950.

She was an excellent singer, working with Frank Sinatra, Buddy Greco and Nat "King" Cole, but, despite her father's being a successful music publisher, she never recorded enough strong original material and she will be best remembered for her cheerful novelty success.

Eileen Barton was born in Brooklyn in 1924 to Benny and Elsie Barton, who had a song-and-dance act in vaudeville. As soon as she could speak, her parents developed a routine for the song "Ain't Misbehavin' ", which led to her working two shows a day at the Palace Theatre on Broadway. When she was seven, she was featured as the mischievous child, Jolly, on Milton Berle's radio show for CBS and she appeared in the film Show for Sale (1937) as Eileen "Jolly" Barton. In 1941, she was in the chorus for the Broadway musical Best Foot Forward, and then toured in Angels in the Wings with Elaine Stritch.

In 1943, Ben Barton passed Frank Sinatra an exceptional new song, "Close to You", and suggested that Sinatra finance a publishing company with him in charge. Over the years, Barton Music published many of Sinatra's hits including "Nancy with the Laughing Face" and his signature tune "Put Your Dreams Away". Ben Barton's association with Sinatra helped Eileen's career, as she appeared on his Paramount shows in New York in 1944, and often sang with him on television and radio. They appeared together on the radio show Lucky Strike Presents Your Hit Parade, and several duets with Sinatra survive including "Together" and "Come Out Wherever You Are".

Bob Merrill, who was to write "How Much is That Doggie in the Window" and many Guy Mitchell hits, gave her "If I Knew You Were Comin', I'd've Baked a Cake". The record soared to the top of the charts and she beat off competition from Georgia Gibbs and Ethel Merman, but the best-selling versions in the UK were by Gracie Fields and Eve Young.

Barton followed her hit with "Dixieland Ball, "May I Take Two Giant Steps", "You Brought a New Kind of Love for Me" and "En-Thus-E-Uz-E-As-M (Enthusiasm)", but she didn't repeat that success. In 1951, she covered Johnnie Ray's "Cry" and did reasonably well in 1953 with "Sway (Quien Sera)"and "Pretend".

As with many singers, her career faltered with the advent of rock'n'roll. In 1962 she appeared in a dire Jayne Mansfield film, Promises! Promises! Shortly before she died, she assisted with a 2-CD set of her recordings.

Incredible Signed Autographed 1980 Concert Program

A unique VERY RARE opportunity to obtain an AUTHENTIC Frank Sinatra inscription, autograph AND doodle from 1980.

Here is truly a most incredible Frank Sinatra signed 1980 Concert Program where he adds a very unusual and RARE Drawing!!

This lavish 1980 program has an inscription personally written by Sinatra at one of his Albert Hall performances. The recipient was a friend of Albert R "Cubby" Broccoli, the famous James Bond films producer. He introduced her to Sinatra, (she had been suffering from a life threatening illness, hence happy face doodle), because he knew she was a lifelong fan of his.

There is wear to the spine of this item. The autograph and doodle are on page three of this ninety-eight page program, which chronicles his career through the decades.

Original 1952 Signed Contract

Here is a piece of entertainment history. A 1952 William Morris Agency contract signed by their famous client Frank Sinatra, his Genuine signature, NOT a proxy as with many of his letters and some insignificant contracts.  This was for an appearance at the Chez Paree in Montreal, Canada. The contract was to perform at the club for a period of ten days beginning on February 6, 1953 (58 years ago).    In addition, attached to the contract is quite a significant rider/memo which states, “Please gives this copy to Frank Sinatra he will need it to cross the border”.  Also attached is a cover sheet detailing his compensation.

An incredible contract in excellent condition with all associated documents of great importance to the legendary singer in 1953, the beginning of his great comeback following his academy award role in “From Here to Eternity” released that same year.   A nice clean, well preserved document, with fantastic bold signature during the most critical juncture of his career and original rider and cover letter included indeed makes this a museum quality piece.

Considred by many to forever be the quintessential Superman, George Reeves, left the world with a touch of immortality.  Many actors have come after but George Reeves was the definitive Superman.  Here is a rare lobby card , considered the best of the lobby card set. Superman with the Mole Men.  Just a beauty!  Excellent condition. 

The lobby cards are actually more scarce than the one sheet and rarely appear on the market.  We are fortunate to have three of them  to offer you.

This card # 3 from Superman's first feature film that wasn't in serial format, is one of our favorites. It has Superman rescuing one of the Mole Men, while they display one of the funniest low budget props ever in films. The prop man took a 1940s Electrolux vacuum cleaner and stuck an oil funnel on the end of it and made a "laser" gun! The film was shot in twelve days on the backlot but still holds up quite well. That's Jerry Maren on the the left of the card, the Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz that hands Judy Garland her giant lollipop.

This is an original fight poster to the fight dubbed "The Rumble in the Jungle" between Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) and George Foreman held in Zaire , Africa on October 30, 1974.

Size: 14x20". Excellent condition!

This was the first heavyweight championship fight ever fought in Africa !! And, it is the most famous and most heavily depicted heavyweight fight in history pitting these two former Olympic Gold Medal winners, the much heavily favored Foreman against the underdog, Ali. Foreman was undefeated up until this time. The critics, the world believed Foreman was invincible. He made such quick work over Joe Frazier and Ken Norton that I remember the ring side announcers joking that "Forman must have left the car running".

Ultimately it was a fight that proved Ali was "The Greatest," as he defeated Foreman in the 8th round. Ali allowed Foreman to punch himself out as Ali performed his famous "Rope-A-Dope," technique. And, at the right moment, Ali unleased a flurry of lightening speed punches that just overwhelmed the giant Foreman and sent him to the canvas as the world looked on in disbelief. As a result of this fight, Muhammad Ali was named Fighter of the Year by Ring magazine, and "Sportsman of the Year" by Sports Illustrated! Ali also received the honor of being named Professional Athlete of the Year and received the 1974 Hickok Belt Award. But, maybe his highest honor was on December 20, 1999 when Sports Illustrated named Muhammad Ali "Athlete of the Century".

The significance of this RARE poster cannot be understated! The poster offered here was actually made for the fight that took place and was actually used to promote it!! This poster is made of a thick paper like flexible cardboard and is in exceptional condition (about the best we have seen for this poster. It comes rolled. . It also comes with the original Ring Magazine from 1974 promoting this fight on the cover and also Ring Magazine highlighting "The Thriller in Manilla" against Joe Frazier.

This particular poster is in the best condition of most we have acquired over the past 20 years. No fold lines or crease marks like most we have seen. Excellent + Condition. . The most desirable poster for this most significant fight that the boxing world have ever seen. (Other than Zaire site poster that sells for 10-15 thousand dollars).

We particularly acquired this piece, in addition to it's historical sports significance, but also because is was used at the Monticello Raceway. We have a number of Monticello Raceway collectors as clients. About six years ago we had another of these fight posters used to,promote the telecast at Monticello Raceway. After it sold almost immediately one particular client was adamant (obsessed was more like it) for us to acquire another including making an outrageous offer to my customer who bought it, but he declined all offers because he loved the poster.

So, after six years we have acquired the Ali/Foreman fight poster for the Monticello Raceway telecast.  And, the collecotr we acqured from also saved the original Ring Magazines for this fight, included with this poster

The title lobby card is theater used, but in very good condition.  The main graphic image is the iconic of the subway grate blowing Monroe's dress upward, exposing her legs.  There are five small tape stains on the edges, where tape was used, and later removed (which we think gives it an added touch of authenticity).  There are two staple marks and about seven pin holes in the upper black background above the title.  The reverse side of the card has a screen service stamp and a few numbers written that do NOT affect the front in any way.  There are no other tears, fading, stains, smudges, missing paper, fading, folds, or pin holes.  There has been NO restoration. The colors are richer and brighter, than the poor JPEG image suggests.

Also, this title card is very elusive in the market place and rarely comes up for sale. It is the first Title Card we have acquired from this classic in over 25 years of collecting.

The Seven Year Itch (20th Century Fox, 1955). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14"). If there's a more iconic image of Marilyn Monroe than that of her skirt blowing up around her as seen on this fabulous lobby card, we have yet to see it! This particular scene in the film was originally shot on location at Lexington and 52nd Street in Manhattan, but the cheers and whistles of the bemused passers-by, all of which only served to anger and embarrass Monroe's then-husband Joe DiMaggio, made the footage unusable. Director Billy Wilder rebuilt the location on the 20th Century Fox lot and reshot the scene, which required more than 40 takes for Monroe to get it right.

NOTE: This Title Card sold at Heritage Auctions in July of 2008 for $1200, with the following condition report: (note our title card offering has NO restoration at all, 100% Original):
"This card was misdescribed as being Mint when in fact it has had restoration work which included pinholes in the corners and several in the image. The borders have had airbrush work and there is a small tear in the left border which slightly extends into the image."

The Misfits depicts the chance meeting and unlikely love affair in Reno, Nevada of a depressive divorcée, Roslyn Taber (Monroe), and Gay Langland (Gable), an aging ex-cowboy prone to gambling and surviving on mustang rustling. He then sells the horses to slaughterhouses for the manufacture of dog food. Wallach plays Guido, Langland's pilot partner, and Clift plays Perce Howland, who is a drifter rodeo rider.

The climax of the film takes place during extended, emotionally intense wrangling scenes on a dry Nevada lakebed.

The "misfits" of the title are both the weak horses which are most likely to be caught in the cruel roping, and the weak, sad characters of the story, unable to find satisfaction and picked off, one at a time, by fate.

For both Monroe and Gable this would be their last film. Gable would not live to see the film's release and Monroe would follow him inAugust 1962.

Photo and autograph are from the 40's apparently during a visit with the Marines, possbily while shooting one of his WWII period films. Amazing set of extraordinary John Wayne treasures.

Fabulous vintage oil on canvas on what appears to be the streets of Paris.   Signed on lower right but cannot make out the full signature (if anyone recognizes please email us).    Appears to be from early 20^th century, around 1910-1920.  Beautiful Victorian style frame.  Excellent detail.  While removing the painting form the frame to inspect I noticed that it has been in the frame for apparently many years as the top exhibited a nice blue sky. Hence, the colors under the decades of dirt would be incredible after a professional cleaning.    I am looking to have this piece researched as I am certain the quality and skill exhibited is from a highly listed and recognized artist.

We acquire two paintings from this same artist so you can look at the signature on the other one and maybe will recognize it. The first name begins with “A”.  The last name starts with either “da” and then I think an upper case “V” or possible “cla” depending on which painting you are looking at.  My leaning is that It is “da” a common beginning for French names.

This is an extraordinary piece of Hollywood history. A stunning one sheet movie poster for this James Cagney “Gangster” classic.  It also features a relatively little known Humphrey Bogart.  What is also amazing is that this is exactly the same artwork as the original 1938 release.  The only difference is a “RERELEASED” stamp under the credits.  We have not found this particular one sheet “Rerelease” ever appearing on the market prior to this (please let us know otherwise).  The opinion from a number of collectors and dealers we have spoken to is that this IS actually a 1938 poster with a "Rerelease" stamp. Or the same 1938 plate was used. This particular poster was re-used in the early 1940’s.

** TWO major collectors/dealers have confirmed this is even MORE Rare than the 1938 release because all of these would have been destroyed during the WWII paper-drives. This one being found in Canada explains its surprising survival.

Also this poster was acquired from a collector in Canada. Because the Canadian Government banned the use of guns in promotional material, i.e. movie posters, in the 1930’s/40’s the gun had been censured by painting over it.  Hence, the gun was professional restored.

Restoration is as follows: James Cagney's gunned was restored.  The man in the upper right (one of the "Dead End Kids") has some restoration above his nose due to fold tears. Leo Gorcey has some touch-up to his forehead due to fold tears and reverse tape removal. And some overall touch up to fold lines.  This one sheet has also been beautifully professionally linen backed. That being said,  this poster has amazingly retained it’s bright , striking colors and as you can see the breath-taking artwork of some of the most important movie stars of the 20^th century. 

BIO:

Throughout the 1930's, Warner Brothers delivered many quality crime and gangster dramas that usually featured the likes of the studio's distinguished contract star roster. This 1938 release is one of the prime examples. James Cagney and Pat O'Brien (who were frequently cast in films together and this is their best one together) portray boyhood buddies who reunite years later after Cagney is released from prison where he had served for many years for a petty crime that he committed while he was still a kid. Cagney has not learned his lesson that crime doesn't pay and so he returns to his old neighborhood to set up his criminal hideout. Meanwhile, his old friend, O'Brien has given up being a street hood and has since become a respected priest who naturally doesn't think highly of the life that his friend has chosen for himself. To make matters worse, six young boys (portrayed by the Dead End Kids) whom O'Brien is trying to lead down the right paths begin to idolize Cagney. Humphrey Bogart also appears in a pre big box office star part as a lawyer and screen veteran George Bancroft also costars as a dishonest crime boss. Michael Curtiz' direction and Max Steiner's musical score are also highlights. This film is one of the all time great ones of the 1930's and an excellent showcase for its legendary cast and crew.

Angels with Dirty Faces (Warner Brothers, 1938). One Sheet (27" X 41").
This incredible picture, in which two childhood friends take very different paths in life, features one of James Cagney's very best roles. As Rocky Sullivan, Cagney plays a big shot gangster who becomes a local hero to a gang of youths (The Dead End Kids). Rocky's old friend, Father Jerry Connelly (Pat O'Brien), tries to convince Rocky to help him save the kids from a life of crime. The final scene, in which Rocky seems to turn yellow on his way to the electric chair - was Rocky really scared, or did he do it for the kids? - is a masterpiece of ambiguity. Rounding out the stellar cast is Humphrey Bogart, who co-stars as the crooked James Frazier, and Ann Sheridan, who plays Laury Ferguson, Rocky's angelic girlfriend. As one of Warner Brothers' top gangster films of the 1930s, paper from this title is considered extremely collectible. It is also exceedingly rare. Before George Reeves played Superman on television, he starred in this feature length tale of the Man of Steel. This lobby card has pinholes in the corners and one in the background. There is a small stain in the bottom border and light smudging along the left side. This is a great card and a welcome addition to any set.

One of the nicest oil portraits we have acquired. The composition, detail and color is extraordinary. The back has been written "David Copperfield". Based on our research, this is most surely the famous Charles Dickens character.

Also, on the back is a stamp that has mostly faded over time. It appears to say "Property of ......" the rest is diffcult to identify but we've included a close up. .

Handwriten Love Letter from Judy to Frank Sinatra, circa 1949

For the Exclusive Collector Seeking the Remarkable

JUST ACQUIRED: 

Once in a while I come across a historical piece of memorabilia that is so extraordinary that NOT acquiring it is unthinkable, even if it sends me back financially.  The voice in my head says “this is exactly the quality piece my customers have a serious interest in”.   So, even though it is a piece I love and probably belongs in a museum, I want my customers to know I am out there searching for the most incredible vintage Hollywood memorabilia and artifacts. Hence, when an astonishing, only-one-of-its-kind item surfaces on the market I am hopefully in a position to acquire it (and not hear about it weeks later in the “auction results" listings). .  

That scenario happened recently when I acquired an intimate handwritten love letter from Judy Garland to Frank Sinatra.   Not only is the handwriting unmistakably Judy Garland’s, but the signature is dead on from 1949 (when She had her first affair with Frank Sinatra).  And,  the original envelop the letter came in has “Frank Sinatra” on the envelop AGAIN in Ms Garland’s unmistakably, very distinctive handwriting.

To Frank Sinatra on embossed Judy Garland stationary: "Darling, My sudden departure is a complete surprise to me, and I'm deeply disapointed (sic) to have to miss our Monday & Tuesday date. However its imperative that I reach Boston by Sunday. I shall be at the Ritz-Carlton either under Mrs. Vincente Minnelli or in care of Carlton Alsop. You said today that you'd been negligent. But darling - that's so unimportant compared to the great amount of happiness you've given me. I shant forget the hours weve (sic) spent together - ever! I'll let you know how everything goes on this trip. In the meantime - take good care of yourself - be happy and have lots of fun and laughs. and for Gods sake - keep those wheels in your lil ole head down to the minimum. Drop me a line if you can because it will cheer me up a great deal. I hope to talk to you tommorow (sic) - but I wanted to write this in case we miss connections. Even if we do reach one another - I'll send it anyway. Its getting late - so Im gonna wash up, get my money, etc. Goodbye my darling - I hope we see each other soon. Please dont forget about me. Think about me because I shall be thinking of you always, Judy."  On Judy Garland's stationary with original envelope with Frank Sinatra written on envelop in Garland's hand. Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra remained good friends until her death in 1969.

On two occasions the two legendary singers were romantically involved. The first time was in 1949. Judy Garland was recovering from a nervous breakdown and the two went on a romantic rendezvous in the Hamptons. Garland was still married to Vincente Minnelli. The second was during one of many separations from Garland's third husband, Sid Luft in 1955. Given the reference to being registered as Mrs. Vincent Minnelli, it is justified to assume that this letter was written C. 1949 following the Hamptons rendezvous. Carlton Alsop who is also referenced in the letter was a radio & film producer and radio announcer who in 1947 married Sylvia Sidney. Carlton Alsop was a good friend and staunch supporter of Judy Garland throughout her life. See: Judy's Singing Again by Carlton Alsop. Photoplay, Nov. 1949. "Drop me a line if you can because it will cheer me up a great deal" seems significant in that Garland was recovering from a breakdown. Note word "shant" and "for God's sake" familiar to anyone who ever seen Judy Garland interviewed will remember that she frequently used these expressions.

A Special Note on Authenticity.  Many of you have read some of the articles I have written on autograph and collectibles authenticity.    The most recent article addressed the issue of “credible” dealer certificates of authenticity.  You can read it here on this web site.   You will note I stressed the importance of a “standard” when it comes to authenticating autographs.  In the current state of the autograph collecting community, there are several services. Some reputable and others less reputable.   And, the only way to understand the difference is sheer experience. Meanwhile, the majority of the industry seems to have settled today on PSA or JSA as the most reliable services.

However, there is often much discussion about WHO within these organizations are actually doing the certifications and their level of expertise since the letters of authenticity from both do NOT identify a certification specialist.   That being said, it was decided this item deserved much more then an anonymous certification from someone who may not have a high level of expertise with Judy Garland. Therefore, I contacted someone who probably has more expertise with Judy Garland’s autograph and handwriting then anyone in the autograph industry. She is the author of the Judy Garland Signature Study that appeared in Autograph Collector Magazine in 2008.  It is by far the most accurate and in-depth study ever done on this entertainment icon. A gorgeous original painting on board. . Most likely an illustration for one of the many magazine covers he did for such national publications as Cosmopolitan, Saturday Evening Post, American, This Week, Field and Stream and True to name a few.  This exquisite portrait of a military or ship's officer and young woman embracing in a ship's cabin is one of the best I have seen from him. Courtney Allen

1896-1969

Courtney Allen was born in Norfolk, Virginia. At age fifteen he quit high school and moved to Dayton, Ohio where he worked in a commercial art studio to help family finances. He later moved to Washington D.C where he took a job with the art department of the former Washington Times and began his formal instruction at the Corcoran Art School. He also studied at the National School of Fine and Applied Art and at the National Academy in New York City.

In the summer of 1919 he enrolled at the Hawthorne School of Art in Provincetown on Cape Cod, to study the Hawthorne method. He returned in 1920 and 1921 to study with W.H. Bicknell, creating a series of Provincetown paintings and etchings. It was the beginning of a long relationship with the Outer Cape.

In 1921 he met his wife, Erma who had also been a student at the Corcoran School of Art. They were married in April 1924 and had one child, Elizabeth. Beginning in 1927, the Allen's returned faithfully every summer to their Truro house where Courtney painted. Allen was a friend of Norman Rockwell, who's work he greatly admired. He was also a contemporary of artists John Whorf, Edward Penfield, and Jerry Farnsworth, the renowned portrait artist who ran a painting school in North Truro. Erma and Courtney collected the work of these and other Cape Cod artists during this time.

During the late 1920's they lived in New Rochelle and Allen established himself as a New York City commercial artist and one of the top illustrators in the country. Over the next thirty years, his illustrations appeared in many books and periodicals including Cosmopolitan, Colliers, The Saturday Evening Post, American, This Week, Field and Stream and True magazines . His method of illustration usually began with photographs of models dressed in costume, then an oil painting on board, which was subsequently photographed and used to illustrate stories in the many magazines that commissioned his work. Some of the paintings were full color, some in shades of gray, black and white so that they would reproduce well when color illustrations were not needed.
During WWII, Allen was drafted as an artist and spent the war years painting camouflage, in addition to more than 400 charcoal drawings of hospitalized war veterans.

Erma and Courtney moved to Truro permanently in 1951. The last twenty years of his life were devoted to expanding his versatile artistic gifts. Although he still illustrated books for Boston publishers, Allen was increasingly drawn to three-dimensional art forms. Allen transitioned naturally from his highly realistic renderings in two-dimension to carvings of waterfowl and documentary models. His sculptural and illustration works can be seen locally in the Provincetown Pilgrim Monument and Museum, the Provincetown Art Association Museum and the Highland House Museum in Truro, where an entire room is dedicated to Allen, the first President of the Truro Historical Society who as instrumental in creating the museum.

Fantastic and scarce original title card for James Stewart's most adored classic. Excellent + Condition!   Of all the advertsiing paper for this title, the Title card has always been my favorite because the artwork is superior to the other posters such as the one sheet, half sheet, etc.  Just great images of Stewart sittting with Harvey along with all the cast members looking on in horror!

Harvey (Universal International, 1950). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14"). James Stewart plays Elwood P. Dowd, a wealthy and eccentric drunk who sees an imaginary rabbit, a claim that raises the eyebrows of local townspeople. Although his sister (Josephine Hull, in an Oscar-winning turn) occasionally sees him too, Stewart's imaginary friend begins to interfere with her plan to find a suitable husband for her daughter.
