1942 - VERY RARE ORIGINAL - One Sheet form this Academy Award winning classic starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. This is the first one sheet we have seen on this title in 20 years of collecting. The only one we know of to appear on the market for the last several years was one auctioned off by Christies in March of 2000 for $2382.

This stunning vintage piece is in excellent condition and has been professionally linen backed. One of the most reputable movie poster dealers in the US told me that this is the "teaser" style which was released before the movie opened. He said this is probably even more rare then the regular one sheet as most "teaser" posters, which were first used in the 30's, were usually destroyed. Original 5x7" photo, vintage signed and inscribed in fountain pen by legendary horror actor Boris Karloff. Photo is attached with tape on the back to an 8x10" cardboard frame. Comes with the original envelope, postmarked 1950, also in Karloff's own hand. Exceptional piece!

Karloff was Hollywood's most successful boogeyman, an actor whose menacing mien scared the heck out of several generations of film fans. The son of a family of British diplomats, he eschewed foreign-service work in favor of acting, emigrating to Canada and eventually touring with small companies all over North America. He made his screen debut as an extra in "The Dumb Girl of Portici" (1916), but didn't approach film work in earnest until 1919, when he appeared with Douglas Fairbanks in "His Majesty, The American." Having resigned himself to work as a character actor, Karloff was more than happy to assume a role originally offered to "Dracula" star Bela Lugosi, who refused it on the ground that he would be unrecognizable under heavy makeup in a part with no dialogue -Karloff played the lumbering monster in "Frankenstein" (1931), a physically demanding assignment that made him a star. Considered a late bloomer in Hollywood, "Frankenstein" premiered when he was 44 years old. Interestingly, he narrated TV's "How The Grinch Stole Christmas!" (1966), and was the original inspiration for the first illustrations of the Incredible Hulk. Karloff died in 1969.

We have never acquired a Karloff autograph of this caliber, with the Original mailing envelop all handwritten in his own hand! In the days of massive internet auction site forgeries , here is a chance to own the genuine Karloff signed photo with great provenance!

Gwynne has signed on the reverse of the second page. Gwynne has also initialed the contract twice. In fine condition, with usual staples, a couple of ink office notations, a bit of overlapping of Gwynne's and another's signatures.

Here is an outstanding 8 1/2" X 11" black and white photo of the great Frank Sinatra and Walter Winchell, AUTHENTICALLY SIGNED BY BOTH! The scan doesn't do this item justice but this photo was signed for a famous dancer of the time, "Joy" (don't know her last name). Frank Sinatra's signature is VERY SLIGHTLY smeared from the wet ink. That said, it is one of the nicest Sinatra signatures we have seen. Walter Winchell's endorsement reads, "To Joy - Who isn't very!!! Walter Winchell. Correction to Joy - Who is hardly any! W.W.". It appears that the pen Winchell was initially using ran out of ink so he switched to another pen to complete his signing. VERY RARE COLLECTOR'S PIECE! Both autographs are GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC FOR LIFE! I

Very RARE, especially when 90% of all Sinatra autographs on the market are forgery or secretarial (99.5% fake on ebay).

Abbott & Costello fan you may not remember, but this is their movie
in which Lou has one of his most memorable scenes ever with

each other by sticking the dolls with pins. It's hard to believe she was
never included in the credits on the poster or their videos, since she

Below is detailed provenance from the original owner.

In 1975, I, along with my brother John wrote a letter to Groucho Marx in California and told him how much we admired his contributions in the entertainment world and asked if he could autograph a photo to us, and shortly afterwards we received this photo in the mail. It is autographed "To John & Bob Best Always, from Groucho." The photograph does have some staining on the very bottom in the margin, not affecting the image of Groucho or the signature. There is also some tape along the borders of the photo, also not affecting the image or the signature. This auction also includes the original envelope that the item was mailed to us in, a manila envelope. It is stamped in the upper left corner "Groucho Marx Beverly Hills, Calif.", stamped also on left "Do not Bend", addressed to the us ( me and my brother), and stamped on the right is the date and time it was mailed - from Las Angeles, California on October 8, 1975 PM , six days after Groucho's eighty fifth birthday, which was October 2, 1975. The flap of the envelope has some damage to it, when it was opened, and there is some tape on it to keep the entire envelope intact. On September 25,2004, I mailed to PSA/DNA the original photo to be authenticated, without the history of the item. This is because when PSA/DNA examines an item, they will only examine the item itself, that it has to stand on its own merits as to whether it is genuine or not. On Thursday, September 30th,2004, I received the photo back with the letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA. PSA/DNA's letter is enclosed in a plastic holder, and is scanned for you, outside of the holder. It is dated Tuesday, September 28, 2004, Re CU20432, certification B92512 and has a photo of the autographed item on their letter. PSA/DNA's certification number, B92512 is on a sticker attached to the back of the autographed photo, and a scan is also provided showing the sticker.

Incredible authenticity and provenance.

This fight-night poster features Legendary Muhammed Ali and his fight with Chuck Wepner .

We had one of these a few months ago but it had writing on the bottom border. This one appears to have never been used as the bottom border (for purpose of writing) is blank. Other then a hint of vintage tone to the poster it is in incredible condition! This poster was stored rolled for over 30 years so that is how it will be shipped. It would display nicely when framed.

This was a monumental fight, as Wepner was the only fighter to ever knock down Ali (as Champion), although it was reported Ali tripped on Wepners foot during the tumble, which resulted in him completely losing balance. Poster comes with small articles from various sources about the match.

It is in excellent condition and has been professionally linen backed.
Billed as "The Screen's First Full Length Musical Comedy Cartoon", it is a real treasure and sure to be a great investment!!

Terrific scene lobby card (11x14) from this early Charlie Chan detective film "Charlie Chan at Treasure Island." This is from the original 1939 FOX release starring Sidney Toler as Charlie and Sen Yung as Jimmy. The card shows them both with suspects. There are a few pinholes, a slight corner fold and some edge wear. This is an excellent collectible from perhaps the best entry in the Chan series.

ARTIST: Signed "C. Wennemoes, Okt 1955". Carl Wennemoes (1890-1965) is a well-listed artist. He was educated at Teknisk Skole (the Technical School ) under Groenvold and Peter Skov.Thereafter, he traveled abroad and visited Germany , Switzerland and Italy . In Italy he worked as a decorative painter in churches and large governmental buildings. He later received the "Larsen Scholarship" to study old murals and for a period of about three years he visited several art schools. He also went on a study tour to Paris in 1927. Carl Wennemoes exhibited at the art dealer Kleis' exhibition, Den Frie (The Free Exhibition), the Deer Park Group and several other Danish exhibition venues. He has also exhibited in Stockholm and in a number of other Swedish towns. Since 1928 he spent time every year studying in Sweden.

Price example: He sold "A Winter Day in Ravnsholt Forest " for $8,155 at Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen , in March 2002 ( Lot 1097, 51 1/6" by 72 7/8").

DATING: October 1955.
CONDITION: Very good. No missing paint, holes or tears. Please see the photos.
The frame is in a very good condition. Ready to hang.

Exceptionally Beautiful Oil Painting on board by Cecil Bell. Signed lower left and again on reverse. This was a very special painting by the artist and was never intended to be sold during his lifetime. It was of his family cottage in Vermont. Writing on reverse states “”Keep for sentimental reasons. Our cabin in VT #456. NOT FOR SALE, Cecil C. Bell ‘68”. Also has Bell Estate Label on back. Exceptional Provenance.

Cecil Bell is a highly listed artist. He has also had several articles and books written about him including two biographies. One in particular by Phyllis Barton which we just ordered on Amazon.

Sales history example: Sold “Team at Auctin” for $39,000 at Sotheby’s New York November 2006.

BIO:

For a while in 1999 one might have imagined that the only thing happening in the art world was the firestorm at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. There the Sensation show was raising a hue and cry, outraging, exhilarating or entertaining, depending on one’s point of view.

Yet not far from that show, in an equally venerable institution, the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences, another and vastly different show was taking place. That no-less-sensational show was an exhibition of the work of Cecil C. Bell, a native of Seattle and longtime resident of Tompkinsville, Staten Island, who died in 1970 at the age of 64.

Organized beautifully by Peggy Hammerle-McGuire, the Institute’s Curator of Art, the 28 pieces in the show (paintings, etchings and a single lithograph) took one through the last four decades of Bell’s life, during which he produced over 800 paintings and thousands of sketches and etchings.

“Spike” Bell was no stranger to artistic controversy. He arrived in New York City in 1930, just as the Great Depression began laying waste to the golden prosperity of the 1920s. Enrolled at the Art Students’ League as a pupil of Harry Wickey and John Sloan, charter members of the Ashcan School, Bell would have found himself almost immediately confronting issues raised by Regionalists vs. Social Realists, not to mention matters of abstraction and modern art. The Museum of Modern Art had just been established (1929) to provide a congenial space for the exhibition of modern art. A tremendous furor was soon to erupt when Nelson Rockefeller ordered the destruction of Diego Rivera’s mural Man at the Crossroads (which had been commissioned for the RCA Building at Rockefeller Center) in1934.
Yet Bell, who earned his living as a free-lance illustrator, always sought to distance himself from schools, esthetic theories, and political postures. Like Hogarth, Daumier or Rockwell, comparisons he might have winced at in modesty, Bell painted and sketched from life rather than from theory. Was it ART?
“I do not think ‘art’ when I do them,” he said of his paintings. “I want to get down life as I see it and if it turns out to be art, so much the better.”

The works selected by the Institute for exhibition reflected Bell’s great talent as a painter. His canvases teem with life. Color, form and composition establish an immediate and almost conversational rapport among artist, subject, and viewer. Anyone who has attentively walked the streets of Manhattan or ridden regularly the Staten Island Ferry will, despite the passage of time, feel a sense of kinship with Bell’s paintings.

A derelict house above a listing store: Even before I saw the title, “Stapleton Corner, 1944,” I recognized the site. But the painting drove me to revisit the spot, to check the canvas and my memory; and there on a winter’s night in 2000, 56 years after Bell had painted the scene, I could still see, in spite of all the changes of the intervening years, what he had seen.

“Brooklyn Bridge in the Snow,” “Brooklyn Bridge from the South Street Seaport,” and “Dinner Under the Bridge” (with humans and gulls searching for scraps) project a palpable humanity that lets us imagine ourselves in these paintings. “Convoys in the Harbor,” a 1944 gouache, exudes the somber mood of World War II America. We all have been on “The Staten Island Ferry on a Rainy Day,” and the shoeshine man in “Shine! Staten Island Ferry” could be a younger version of the 88-year-old Italian man who still calls out “Shine!” as he walks the decks of the ferry.

Phyllis Barton’s 1976 study, Cecil C. Bell, is still available from David W. Bell, Cecil C. Bell’s nephew. It provides a useful summary of Bell’s life and does a fairly good job of situating him within the broad context of 20th-century artistic traditions.
But that is not its real contribution. This book is a treasure trove of Bell’s paintings and etchings. Here, handsomely reproduced in beautiful color, are his celebrated horse and Vermont paintings (not strongly represented in the SIIAS show), as well as his streetscapes, waterfront, and ferry paintings. Open to pp. 84-85 for a feel of what Times Square was like on V-J Day, or to pp. 86-87 for two different, yet equally romantic, views of the Narrows from Clifton.

Bell lived and loved New York and the great tide of unsung humanity that daily flooded its streets. His paintings capture that life and love: The sacred and the profane, the prosaic and the profound, the comedic and the catastrophic, just as these contradictory yet complementary qualities are found in all our lives.
A 1973 retrospective of Bell’s work at the Museum of the City of New York was titled The Vanished City. SIIAS rendered a signal public service in once again mounting a public exhibition of his work. Their outstanding job of remembrance and renewal reminded us of Bell’s legacy while introducing a younger generation to his work.
