Circa 1910-1920

Fabulous vintage oil on canvas on what appears to be the streets of Paris.   Signed on lower right but cannot make out the full signature (if anyone recognizes please email us).    Appears to be from early 20^th century, around 1910-1920.  Beautiful Victorian style frame.  Excellent detail.  While removing the painting form the frame to inspect I noticed that it has been in the frame for apparently many years as the top exhibited a nice blue sky. Hence, the colors under the decades of dirt would be incredible after a professional cleaning.    I am looking to have this piece researched as I am certain the quality and skill exhibited is from a highly listed and recognized artist.

We acquire two paintings from this same artist so you can look at the signature on the other one and maybe will recognize it. The first name begins with “A”.  The last name starts with either “da” and then I think an upper case “V” or possible “cla” depending on which painting you are looking at.  My leaning is that It is “da” a common beginning for French names.

One of the nicest oil portraits we have acquired. The composition, detail and color is extraordinary. The back has been written "David Copperfield". Based on our research, this is most surely the famous Charles Dickens character.

Also, on the back is a stamp that has mostly faded over time. It appears to say "Property of ......" the rest is diffcult to identify but we've included a close up. .

Most likely an illustration for one of the many magazine covers he did for such national publications as Cosmopolitan, Saturday Evening Post, American, This Week, Field and Stream and True to name a few.  This exquisite portrait of a military or ship's officer and young woman embracing in a ship's cabin is one of the best I have seen from him. Rich colors, exceptional detail, and obvious overwhelming passion.    A beauty with universal appeal.    Signed lower right. See bio below.

Courtney Allen
Painter

Courtney Allen was born in Norfolk, Virginia. At age fifteen he quit high school and moved to Dayton, Ohio where he worked in a commercial art studio to help family finances. He later moved to Washington D.C where he took a job with the art department of the former Washington Times and began his formal instruction at the Corcoran Art School. He also studied at the National School of Fine and Applied Art and at the National Academy in New York City.

In the summer of 1919 he enrolled at the Hawthorne School of Art in Provincetown on Cape Cod, to study the Hawthorne method. He returned in 1920 and 1921 to study with W.H. Bicknell, creating a series of Provincetown paintings and etchings. It was the beginning of a long relationship with the Outer Cape.

In 1921 he met his wife, Erma who had also been a student at the Corcoran School of Art. They were married in April 1924 and had one child, Elizabeth. Beginning in 1927, the Allen's returned faithfully every summer to their Truro house where Courtney painted. Allen was a friend of Norman Rockwell, who's work he greatly admired. He was also a contemporary of artists John Whorf, Edward Penfield, and Jerry Farnsworth, the renowned portrait artist who ran a painting school in North Truro. Erma and Courtney collected the work of these and other Cape Cod artists during this time.

During the late 1920's they lived in New Rochelle and Allen established himself as a New York City commercial artist and one of the top illustrators in the country. Over the next thirty years, his illustrations appeared in many books and periodicals including Cosmopolitan, Colliers, The Saturday Evening Post, American, This Week, Field and Stream and True magazines . His method of illustration usually began with photographs of models dressed in costume, then an oil painting on board, which was subsequently photographed and used to illustrate stories in the many magazines that commissioned his work. Some of the paintings were full color, some in shades of gray, black and white so that they would reproduce well when color illustrations were not needed.
During WWII, Allen was drafted as an artist and spent the war years painting camouflage, in addition to more than 400 charcoal drawings of hospitalized war veterans.

Erma and Courtney moved to Truro permanently in 1951. The last twenty years of his life were devoted to expanding his versatile artistic gifts. Although he still illustrated books for Boston publishers, Allen was increasingly drawn to three-dimensional art forms. Allen transitioned naturally from his highly realistic renderings in two-dimension to carvings of waterfowl and documentary models. His sculptural and illustration works can be seen locally in the Provincetown Pilgrim Monument and Museum, the Provincetown Art Association Museum and the Highland House Museum in Truro, where an entire room is dedicated to Allen, the first President of the Truro Historical Society who as instrumental in creating the museum.

Extraordinary Old Master Genre Painting
17^th-18^th Century - circa 1700

An exquisite old master painting depicting extravagantly dressed man and woman in a striking and inquisitive scene with man standing in the background and statue and a symbolical type figure to their left. Thought provoking subject matter. Unsigned.

The colors are bright and the paint is in good condition considering it's age. There is some craquelures in some areas such as the woman's face. It appears it has been relined, but difficult to tell as it was well done. Under black light shows minor touch up, no more then 5%. An exceptional primitive, historical painting, well executed and striking appeal. We don't come across many like this!

The best thing about collecting and selling fine art is it can be enjoyed for long time until a buyer comes along. Sometimes the art is so magnificent a sale is not necessary or even pursued. This is such an extraordinary painting. The images don’t do this piece justice. Signed "Masters" within the artwork on the wagon handle, l.r.

Edward Masters was indeed a master of Farm and Village Scenes. His work, depth, color, details is incredible.

Edward Masters is a highly listed artist without dates (only that he was active in period of 1869). Even smaller sizes of his work sell for several thousand dollars..

Condition: Has been relined, some craquelures in sky area due to age, frame is relatively new.

Ernest Fiene (1894-1965)
Portrait of Ann Perls

Spectacular portrait of "Ann Perls". The colors, detail, subject, table objects, background painting onto which he applies his signature make this an exceptional work of art and one of Fiene best. Although he was primarily known for his city scenes his often produced some remarkable portraits. This is the best portrait, based on our extensive research on hundreds of his paintings, he has ever produced. The closest style of work very similar to this we could find is the one which sold in the early 90's for $8800, which was much smaller and we believe not in the same extraordinary category as this one. Refer to the image of it provided.

It comes in a high quality frame which appears to have been framed in the 40's or 50's. The original Gallery label from Associated American Artists in New York is still attached, but is torn and has become fragile. Also has a label from an old auction sale on back. Both labels identify this as "Portrait of Ann Perls" by Ernest Fiene. He has SIGNED onto the inside painting behind Ann Perls head, "E. Fiene" . Refer to images.

Artist: Ernest Fiene (1894-1965) is a highly listed artist with a strong history of appreciation based on hundreds of auction sales.

Sales history: Sold "Waterfront, Lower Manhattan" Sotheby's December 2004 for $38,400 (est was $8,000-$12,000).

Based on our research of hundreds of his paintings, our impression is this is one of the best works of art he produced. Hence, we think our asking price is quite reasonable considering the quality and high demand of this artist's work.

Fiene, born in Germany, became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1927, having spent the previous fifteen years studying art at various New York institutions and building his reputation as a painter of American scenes.

A fixture on the faculty of the Art Students League, he was also a prolific artist with a body of work spanning many media, from etchings to frescoes.

A teacher and artist, Ernest Fiene created works in many media but was noted primarily for his landscapes of American scenes. He also did portraits, etchings, lithographs, murals and book illustrations. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he refused to isolate technique from subject matter, and incorporated his interest in human life and his optimism about humanity into his paintings.

Ernest Fiene was born in 1894. He gained is academic training at numerous art schools in New York City, including the National Academy of Design (1914 - 1918), the Beaux Arts Insititue (1916-1918), and The Art Students League in 1923. Six years later, Fiene left for a tour of Europe. While he was in Paris, he attended L'Academie de La Grane Chaumiere. After returning from France, Fiene began teaching at the Westchester County Center. In 1932 he returned to Europe and headed to Florence, Italy were he would learned the art of fresco painting.

Upon returning to the U.S. Fiene was awarded a post office mural commission titled Paul Rever as an Industrialist in Cantor, Massachussetts. One year later, in 1937, the artist was commissioned to do a mural in Washington D.C.

Fiene taught art at a number of school around the country, inlcluding the Colorado Springs Fine Arts (1935) Center and the Cooper Union Institute in New York (1938-1939). He was a member of the Art Students League from 1938-1964 and became a supervising faculty member at Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut.

Extraordinary 19^th century collection from this incredibly talented illustration artist. Louisa M. Gibson Pratt is a listed artist and can be found in Artprice.com. Unfortunately her work appears on the market VERY RARELY. As far as we know from extensive research, this collection includes the one of the only Watercolors to appear on the market for this artist. AND, what a breathtaking watercolor it is at that. But, we will let you judge for yourself with the images we have provided.

Also, our research via Google indicates there is a connection or relationship with Charles Gibson, of "The Gibson Girls" fame.

This Rare collection includes one stunning watercolor on board and five drawings, ALL ORIGINALS, NOT PRINTS. The watercolor is an illustration for “The Sea Princess’ Children” (and is identified as such in writing on the back), a 19^th century children’s book. It is simply, breath-taking ! The five drawings are female subjects including one nude.

Each piece is signed either on the front or the back (or both). The watercolor also has monogrammed initials on the bottom left and notes and signature on the back.

The size of each piece is approximately 17x24”.

They are all in excellent condition. There are some paper tears on some of the drawings, however no tears touch the artwork. Look at how breath-taking these look recently framed.

Bio:

An expatriate born in Boston, Louis Kronberg spent much of his career in France learning the pastel technique from Edgar Degas, French Impressionist. Kronberg painted many graceful figure works and became a popular portraitist of the early 20th Century. He was best known for his pictures of the theater and its performers, especially dancers and dancing.

In Paris, he acted as a buyer for Isabella Stewart Gardner of Boston. He also painted in Algiers and Spain. He returned to the United States after twenty-five years and became an important figure in the Cape Ann, Massachusetts art colony.

Kronberg attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Art Students League in New York City, where he studied under William Merritt Chase.

His early oil paintings were in an academic style, somewhat dark, with a subdued tonal effect. However, influenced by the techniques of James McNeill Whistler, the compositions of Edgar Degas, and his own interest in oriental woodcuts and engravings, Kronberg evolved a new personal style, which was animated, dramatic, and adventurous in design.

Kronberg's paintings were shown in important exhibitions and acquired by leading museums such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Muse d'Oursay in Paris, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and, due to the great friendship the artist had with Isabella Stewart Gardner, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, also in Boston.

A member of the Barbizon School, Richet was a noted painter of landscapes, still lifes and genre scenes. Born in Solesne in 1847, the artist showed great talent at an early age and initially studied with Ambroise Detrez at the Academy of Valenciennes. His skills developed rapidly under the tutelage of such esteemed artists as Díaz de la Peña, Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. Richet was also greatly influenced by Théodore Rousseau's powerful and mystical depictions of nature.

Collectorship of Richet's art gained momentum throughout Europe, culminating in the artist's debut in the Paris Salon of 1869, as well as inclusion in the Salon des Artistes Français. Richet is considered an important and respected figure from the Barbizon School and his paintings continue to be in great demand by collectors and museums throughout the world.

Best known for large figural works, portraits, and still lifes in realist style with interplay of design elements, Robert Brackman created paintings that show the gamut of technical and imaginative skills. It is not credible to align him with any art movement because he was an artist who simply went his own way, pursuing his own vision.

From 1931, he had a long career teaching at the Art Students League in New York and was a life member of the League. He also taught at the American Art School in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum School, the Lyme Art Academy, and the Madison Art School in Connecticut.

As a portraitist, he painted notables including John D Rockefeller, Jr., Charles Lindburgh, and John Foster Dulles as well as portraits commissioned by the Air Force Academy and the State Department. He was so successful with his portrait painting that he had to choose amongst persons wanting to commission him and from 1940, limited his sitters to three or four a year.

He was born in Odessa, Russia, and came to the United States in 1908. He studied at The National Academy of Design from 1919 to 1921, and the Ferrer School in San Francisco. In New York, he also studied with Robert Henri and George Bellows at the National Academy of Design.

From 1934 to 1944, he had seven one-man exhibitions in New York City at Macbeth Gallery.

BIO:

Hans-Peter Zimmer (1936 – 1992) was a German painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. He formed the group SPUR in 1957 with the painters Heimrad Prem, Helmut Sturm and the sculptor Lothar Fischer. After a joint exhibition at the Pavillon im Alten Botanischen Garten in Munich, they met the Danish artist and philosopher Asger Jorn, who linked them up with the Galerie Van de Loo which exhibited them.

In 1959 the group joined the Situationist International. In 1961 they were banned from the Haus der Kunst (House of Art) by the Bavarian Minister of Culture. In 1962 they were indicted for pornography and blasphemy. They were expelled from the Situationist International that year.

The group SPUR broke up in 1966. In the same year, Zimmer and Helmut Sturm founded Gruppe Geflecht, but Zimmer lost interest in the group activities soon and started a solo career.

Born in Berlin in 1939 HP Zimmer was introduced early to art by his uncle, the collector Otto Ralfs. In 1956/57 Zimmer studied at the Kunsthochschule Hamburg under Prof. Kranz and Prof. Johannes Itten before changing to the Kunstakademie München. The same year the painters HP Zimmer, Helmut Sturm and Heimrad Prem as well as the sculptor Lothar Fischer founded the group SPUR. In 1958 the first SPUR manifest was published as well as the SPUR graphic portfolio with 12 etchings by the artists and texts by Asger Jorn, Hans Platschek and Conrad Westphal. Between 1959 and 1962 SPUR became a member of the INTERNATIONALE SITUATIONNISTE (I.S.), a political-cultural movement of architects, film makers, artists and writers. In 1962 the group published the SPUR-book, in which the SPUR magazines volume 1-7 were printed. After projects in co-operation with the artist group 'Wir' from Munich, the groups were joined under the name 'Geflecht', which was closed at the time of the beginning student riots in 1968. In 1963 three co-operative works came into existence, in which Zimmer participated: the SPUR building at the Biennale in Paris . the mural 'Canal Crescendo' at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice and the painting of a cottage near Munich. Travelling through Italy, Zimmer met with Enrico Baj, Jean Dubuffet, Emilio Vedova and Graham Sutherland. In 1967 the artist withdrew from all his groups and did not paint for a year. In 1973 he moved to Aschau at the Chiemgau. In 1982 he received a call to the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig. In 1984 HP Zimmer's autobiography 'Selbstgespräch' was published. In 1986 he founded the Institut für Dämonologische Ästhetik in Braunschweig. HP Zimmer died from a brain tumour on 5 September 1992.

George Armfield (1808 - 1893)

Bio:
George Armfield Smith (for by this name he was known until the year 1840) was born in Wales. (Actually Bristol: according to Armfield family information) His father was a painter, who for some time had a studio at 54, Pall Mall, London, (His father was the portrait painter William Armfield Hobday (1771-1831)) and from his father, George Armfield obtained any artistic tuition he may have received.

He first exhibited in the year 1839, at the British Institution, when he showed two pictures, the "Study of a Dog's Head" and "Terrier chasing a Rabbit." These works must have attracted notice, for in the Sporting Magazine of the following year, 1840, we find the first of a long series of his pictures which were engraved for that publication. In 1840 he exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy, showing two pictures, "Fox and Wild Rabbits" and "Terrier and Rabbit," and, as the lists show, he continued to exhibit with regularity at both the Academy and the British Institution for the ensuing twenty years. He also sent pictures frequently to the Suffolk Street exhibitions.

The British Institution catalogue gives his address in 1839 as 15, Lamb's Conduit Passage; but if he resided there at this time, he could not have remained long, as he spent practically all his life at Camberwell, Clapham, and Brixton. His best period extended from 1840 to about 1869, and during these years his output was large. About 1870 his sight began to fail, and in 1872 he submitted to an operation on one of his eyes at Guy's Hospital, when Dr. Bader removed the lens. The operation was only partially successful, and his powers rapidly declined, he became the victim of fits of acute depression, in one of which he attempted to take his own life. He recovered from the self-inflicted wound, and continued to paint, but was able to work only with the aid of a powerful glass and on small canvases.

Harold Green (1883-1969)

Here is one of TWO striking portraits we are offering from this artist. An artist who exhibits an extraordinary skill is capturing the genuine essence of his subjects. This piece identified as "Reverend Hiram Arms". Early 20th Century. This piece along with the other Green portrait we are offering here on our site were both exhibited at the 1926 Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts Sixteenth Annual Exhibition.

Unsigned but clearly identified as Harold Green. Includes provenance from original owner.

BIO:
Harold Abbott Green was born in Montreal in 1883 and died in Hartford, Connecticut in 1969 where he studied art under Robert Brandegee and Charles Flagg.

Known for impressionistic landscapes and seascapes as well as genre scenes. Many of his beach and boat scenes were painted along the Rhode Island shoreline from 1915 to 1930 during summer vacations.

He was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and exhibited at the Wadsworth Athenaeum, where he won a prize in 1918.

As mentioned in the below biography, his work was so incredibly realistic and detailed, I thought it might have been a high quality print. Although this artwork was evaluated in 1968 and also exhibited in the Brooklyn Museum, I had to prove it’s originality to myself. Hence, I remove the artwork from the period frame to examine it. It was indeed ink and not a print as under magnifier can see the ink variations and even clumping. Moreover, I was glad I did remove and examine as discovered on the back was another partial ink drawing, of the same subject but smaller version. He completed only the lady, and a pencil draft of the man and bed. The decided to turn the paper over and complete a larger rendition of this illustration which was eventually published in the August 1887 edition of Harpers Monthly. Also, noted on both ink drawings was several “ink scratches” to the right where Frost apparently continued to test his fountain pen for proper ink flow.

Frost is a Highly Listed Artist.

A famous illustrator and sporting artist, Arthur B. Frost is perhaps best known for his illustrations for the Uncle Remus tales by Joel Chandler Harris, as well as for naturalistic hunting and shooting prints. Many consider him to be the best illustrator of rural America.

An ardent sportsman himself, many of Frosts favorite subjects were hunting, fishing, and golfing. Often his golfing subjects tended towards humor. His scenes capture the drama of the sport - a hunter poised to shoot and a dog on point - with elements often integrated into a richly detailed woodland or marsh setting.

Frost chronicled aspects of America's cultural life for over five decades. From the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, his art appeared in the many books and publications of the time, including Harper's Weekly, Scribner's, and Life magazines.

Frost's illustrations always evoked the essence of a setting and its mood, whether depicting the hilarious escapades of the family cat or farm dog, or the serene pastoral lifestyle of the native northeast. His sound draftsmanship was combined with an intimate knowledge of nature. Frosts details in his pictures were very specific, as though drawn on the spot, and done in a very convincing manner. In the preface and dedication by Harris of his book Uncle Remus, Harris wrote of Frost "you have conveyed into their quaint antics the illumination of your own inimitable humor, which is as true to our sun and soil as it is to the spirit and essence of the matter. The book was mine, but now you have made it yours, both sap and pith" Other well known examples of Frosts illustrations are Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit from The Tar Baby.

Bio:

A.B. Frost was born in Philadelphia in 1851 and spent his most prolific years in New Jersey. Considered one of the great illustrators of the “Golden Age of American Illustration, he illustrated more than ninety books and produced thousands of illustrations for Harper’s Weekly, Scribner’s and Life magazines. Frost’s illustrative work chronicles the mood and details of the daily life of farmers, barnyards and motifs of pastoral New England.

By 1876 he was on Harper’s staff working on many books including Tom Sawyer, Uncle Remus, and Mr. Dooley. He also illustrated Teddy Roosevelt’s sporting books.

In 1891 Frost began studying with William Merritt. He spent time in the art colony of Rockport, Massachusetts and the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art, founded by Mr. Chase outside of Southampton, New York. In 1906 he and his wife and two sons departed for Europe to live in and paint in France while his son Jack was studying at the Academie Julian.

Frost’s two sons (Arthur G. and John Frost) were also artists until their untimely deaths from tuberculosis. Frost’s wife also painted and worked with him at Harper’s. The poet, Robert Frost was a distant cousin.

Harald Viggo Moltke (1871-1960)

ARTIST: Signed "H. Moltke". Harald Viggo Moltke (1871-1960) is a VERY well-listed artist with over 100 auction listings on Artprice selling in an excess of $20,000. This may be one of his finest works.

He grew up in Yorkville , South Carolina but after his father's death, he returned with his mother to Denmark . He went to Kunstakademiet (the Academy of Fine Arts ) in Copenhagen in the years 1889-1893. Harald Moltke was a member of Arctic Council and an honorary member of Frederiksberg Literary and Art Association. As an artist he followed scientific expeditions in North Atlantic expeditions. Around the turn of the century he joined the
famous Knud Rasmussen on a trip to Greenland at a literary- art project where a big illustrated work about Greenland was to be made. Unfortunately he caught a serious disease that lamed him. It became an obstacle for his work the rest of his life. In 1903 during the convalescence he finished his main work "Portraits of the Inuits at Kap Horn". He also made portraits of his fellow travellers Knud Rasmussen and Mylius-Erichsen.

Harald Moltke was an important Charlottenborg painter and exhibited in England and Germany as well. His works are represented e.g. at National Museet in Copenhagen , in Vejle and Frederiksborg Museum and in S?fartsmuseet at Kronborg.

DATING: 1896.
