2009 marks the 50th anniversary of Lou Costello's death of a heart attack at the young age of 52. It's hard to believe it has been a half-century that Lou has been gone. Coincidentally 2009 marks the quarter-century anniversary of Bud Abbott's death of prostrate cancer in 1974 at the age of 78. The original trio were Moe Howard (born Harry Horwitz, 1897-1975), his brother Curly (born Jerry Horwitz, 1903-1952), and Larry Fine (born Louis Feinberg, 1902-1975). Stooge comedy consisted mainly of slapstick eye-gouging, shin-kicking, head-knocking, and the like. The group made nearly 200 comedy shorts between 1934 and 1958. The first 97 starred the original trio; after Curly suffered a stroke in 1946, he was replaced by his brother Shemp, then by Joe Besser, and finally by 'Curly Joe' De Rita.

Movie stills (photos) have been issued by studios since the earliest days of cinema. They were sent in limited numbers direct from the studio's publicity department to theaters and the media to promote a new release and the film's stars. These printings had very short printing runs, and the stills became in essence "limited edition" prints.

Most movie stills show a movie scene, but also include stunning portrait shots and fascinating candids. Studios recognized the great promotional value of these stills to entice moviegoers into the theater, and often spared no expense in creating beautiful scene stills, portraits and candids taken by some of Hollywood's most accomplished photographers. Many stills are like works of art in themselves and have become iconic images of cinema and 20th Century culture.
Since the late '60s stills have taken their place along movie posters and lobby cards as desirable and highly collectible cinema artifacts. More and more collectors are becoming aware of these stills and how desirable they are to collect and/or display.

Born and raised in show business, little Frances Gumm changed her name to Judy Garland and became one of classic Hollywood's most popular musical entertainers and actresses. She won her only Academy Award in 1939 "for her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile during the past year," most notably for her work on "The Wizard of Oz" Later in her career however, she would earn greater recognition for her acting abilities with Oscar nominations for her performances in A STAR IS BORN (1954) and JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG (1961). Judy is my favorite female classic movie vocalist, and in 2004, the American Film Institute's ranked five of her famous film numbers among its list of the 100 Greatest Movie Songs -- more than any other female vocalist.

Judy Garland's performance as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939) won her a special Oscar and gave her a theme song for the rest of her life: "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

"That Old Man River keeps rolling along" was one of the many songs that Judy Garland recorded. She was born in 1922 in the Upper Mississippi River town of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, where the Judy Garland Museum takes up an entire floor of the old grade school. A block away is the site of the home where Garland spent the first five years of her life. That spot is now occupied by a multiplex cinema in the town's only shopping center. Garland's father operated the only movie theater in Grand Rapids until he moved the family to California in 1927. Garland made her stage debut at that Grand Rapids theater with her two older sisters. In 1934 the Gumm Sisters performed in Chicago during the World's Fair there. That is where Frances Gumm was advised to change her name to Judy Garland. Her voice got her into film acting when she was 13 and kept her in demand for stage and television performances after her film career was over. The Judy Garland in the later movies was much slimmer than the teenager who co-starred with Mickey Rooney and who played Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz". The final display in The Judy Garland Museum blames the pills she started taking in the 1940s to achieve the streamlined figure Hollywood wanted her to have for her early death at the age of 47.

Why did "Night Court" mock a legend like Mel Torme?  He was brilliant and what a talent!

In his youth, George Reeves aspired to become a boxer, but gave up this pursuit because his mother was worried that he'd be seriously injured. Attracted to acting, Reeves attended the Pasadena Playhouse, where he starred in several productions. In 1939, Reeves was selected to play one of the Tarleton twins in the Selznick superproduction Gone With the Wind (1939). He made an excellent impression in the role, and spent the next few years playing roles of varying sizes at Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and Paramount. He was praised by fans and reviewers alike for his performances in Lydia (1941) and So Proudly We Hail (1943); upon returning from WWII service, however, Reeves found it more difficult to get good roles. He starred in a few "B"'s and in the title role of the Columbia serial The Adventures of Sir Galahad (1949), but for the most part was shunted away in ordinary villain roles.

In 1951, he starred in the Lippert programmer Superman vs. the Mole Men, playing both the Man of Steel and his bespectacled alter ego, Clark Kent. This led to the immensely popular Superman TV series, in which Reeves starred from 1953 through 1957. While Superman saved Reeves' career, it also permanently typecast him. He made an appearance as wagon train leader James Stephen in Disney's Westward Ho, the Wagons! (1956), though the producer felt it expeditious to hide Reeves behind a heavy beard. While it is now commonly believed that Reeves was unable to get work after the cancellation of Superman in 1957, he was in fact poised to embark on several lucrative projects, including directing assignments on two medium-budget adventure pictures and a worldwide personal appearance tour. On June 16, 1959, Reeves died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. The official ruling was suicide -- and, since he left no note, it was assumed that Reeves was despondent over his flagging career. Since that time, however, there has been a mounting suspicion (engendered by the actor's friends and family) that George Reeves was murdered.

Soon to be released Holywoodland is based on the George Reeves story.
