RARE - HISTORICAL Cal Neva Autograph

Just acquired.  An incredible historical Frank Sinatra item.  A vintage ball point pen autograph on a RARE Cal Neva record.  He only produced this to promote his new venture (note how Cal Neva is mis-spelled on bottom of record sleeve).  You know the history behind the Cal neva Lodge.   We have never seen a Genuine Autograph Frank Sinatra Cal Neva piece before. The album in and of itself is extremely rare. But to have it Authentically Signed by Sinatra? Unheard of.

During the time this item was made, Frank Sinatra was at a very high point in his life and career and figured that it would be great to partner up with buddy Dean Martin and silent partner, Chicago mob boss, Sam "Momo" Giancana, and others to run his own casino, the Cal Neva Lodge. However, Nevada gaming commission regulations prohibited the attendance of any known criminals at any of its licensed gaming facilities. Since the FBI was watching the Cal Neva closely, they reported that mob boss Sam Giancana did visit the facility and his presence was acknowledged by Frank Sinatra. As a result, Frank Sinatra lost his gaming license for the Cal Neva. Years later, in the early 1980s, Frank would redeem himself before the Nevada gaming commission and win his license back after grueling testimony by himself, Kirk Douglas, the Los Angeles sheriff, and many others. It's interesting to note that in Frank Sinatra's testimony, he stated that he never saw Sam Giancana at the Cal Neva.

For those of you adept at Frank Sinatra's Genuine signature, you will see this is a dead on consistent signature in time period he owned the Cal Neva Lodge.   Unfortunately many long time dealers are still selling the obvious secretarial autographs.  It is estimated 95% of all Sinatra autographs on the market are fake.

Rare Frank Sinatra's Cal Neva Lodge Lighter

This is one of the most desirable and collectible casino and Frank Sinatra related items of all. Condition - EXCELLENT! Whoever owned this piece, certainly wanted to preserve its condition as it is now being presented with almost NO lacquer wear. . Printed/engraved on lighter is "Frank SInatra's Cal Neva Lodge" . These are neat mini lighters about 1.5" x 1.75"

Frank Sinatra was known to give these lighters to friends who visited him at the lodge.

A magnificent vintage autographed Frank Sinatra Family photo, circa 1953-55.  Imagine, toddler Frank Jr, teenager Nancy, and baby Tina.  The only Sinatra family signed photo we have ever seen in over 25 years collecting.

1. A vintage John Engstead embossed 8x10 photo of Frank Sinatra’s family (at the time). His wife Nancy; “To Eileen best of everything love & best wishes  Nancy", also son Frankie , daughter Tina and daughter Nancy have all signed.

Other separately sold item include a 1953 Contract and Signed glossy 8x10 of Frank Sinatra around the late 1940’s/ early 1950’s. Inscribed in black fountain pen ink: “To Dear Eileen in appreciation for your admiration with fondest regards Frank”.  See below under Recommended Products

The phrase for an unexpected guest, "If knew you were coming, I'd've baked a cake", has now passed into the language, but few would know that it originated with the singer Eileen Barton, who topped the US charts for three months with the song in 1950.

She was an excellent singer, working with Frank Sinatra, Buddy Greco and Nat "King" Cole, but, despite her father's being a successful music publisher, she never recorded enough strong original material and she will be best remembered for her cheerful novelty success.

Eileen Barton was born in Brooklyn in 1924 to Benny and Elsie Barton, who had a song-and-dance act in vaudeville. As soon as she could speak, her parents developed a routine for the song "Ain't Misbehavin' ", which led to her working two shows a day at the Palace Theatre on Broadway. When she was seven, she was featured as the mischievous child, Jolly, on Milton Berle's radio show for CBS and she appeared in the film Show for Sale (1937) as Eileen "Jolly" Barton. In 1941, she was in the chorus for the Broadway musical Best Foot Forward, and then toured in Angels in the Wings with Elaine Stritch.

In 1943, Ben Barton passed Frank Sinatra an exceptional new song, "Close to You", and suggested that Sinatra finance a publishing company with him in charge. Over the years, Barton Music published many of Sinatra's hits including "Nancy with the Laughing Face" and his signature tune "Put Your Dreams Away". Ben Barton's association with Sinatra helped Eileen's career, as she appeared on his Paramount shows in New York in 1944, and often sang with him on television and radio. They appeared together on the radio show Lucky Strike Presents Your Hit Parade, and several duets with Sinatra survive including "Together" and "Come Out Wherever You Are".

Bob Merrill, who was to write "How Much is That Doggie in the Window" and many Guy Mitchell hits, gave her "If I Knew You Were Comin', I'd've Baked a Cake". The record soared to the top of the charts and she beat off competition from Georgia Gibbs and Ethel Merman, but the best-selling versions in the UK were by Gracie Fields and Eve Young.

Barton followed her hit with "Dixieland Ball, "May I Take Two Giant Steps", "You Brought a New Kind of Love for Me" and "En-Thus-E-Uz-E-As-M (Enthusiasm)", but she didn't repeat that success. In 1951, she covered Johnnie Ray's "Cry" and did reasonably well in 1953 with "Sway (Quien Sera)"and "Pretend".

As with many singers, her career faltered with the advent of rock'n'roll. In 1962 she appeared in a dire Jayne Mansfield film, Promises! Promises! Shortly before she died, she assisted with a 2-CD set of her recordings.

Incredible Signed Autographed 1980 Concert Program

A unique VERY RARE opportunity to obtain an AUTHENTIC Frank Sinatra inscription, autograph AND doodle from 1980.

Here is truly a most incredible Frank Sinatra signed 1980 Concert Program where he adds a very unusual and RARE Drawing!!

This lavish 1980 program has an inscription personally written by Sinatra at one of his Albert Hall performances. The recipient was a friend of Albert R "Cubby" Broccoli, the famous James Bond films producer. He introduced her to Sinatra, (she had been suffering from a life threatening illness, hence happy face doodle), because he knew she was a lifelong fan of his.

There is wear to the spine of this item. The autograph and doodle are on page three of this ninety-eight page program, which chronicles his career through the decades.

Original 1952 Signed Contract

Here is a piece of entertainment history. A 1952 William Morris Agency contract signed by their famous client Frank Sinatra, his Genuine signature, NOT a proxy as with many of his letters and some insignificant contracts.  This was for an appearance at the Chez Paree in Montreal, Canada. The contract was to perform at the club for a period of ten days beginning on February 6, 1953 (58 years ago).    In addition, attached to the contract is quite a significant rider/memo which states, “Please gives this copy to Frank Sinatra he will need it to cross the border”.  Also attached is a cover sheet detailing his compensation.

An incredible contract in excellent condition with all associated documents of great importance to the legendary singer in 1953, the beginning of his great comeback following his academy award role in “From Here to Eternity” released that same year.   A nice clean, well preserved document, with fantastic bold signature during the most critical juncture of his career and original rider and cover letter included indeed makes this a museum quality piece.

Handwriten Love Letter from Judy to Frank Sinatra, circa 1949

For the Exclusive Collector Seeking the Remarkable

JUST ACQUIRED: 

Once in a while I come across a historical piece of memorabilia that is so extraordinary that NOT acquiring it is unthinkable, even if it sends me back financially.  The voice in my head says “this is exactly the quality piece my customers have a serious interest in”.   So, even though it is a piece I love and probably belongs in a museum, I want my customers to know I am out there searching for the most incredible vintage Hollywood memorabilia and artifacts. Hence, when an astonishing, only-one-of-its-kind item surfaces on the market I am hopefully in a position to acquire it (and not hear about it weeks later in the “auction results" listings). .  

That scenario happened recently when I acquired an intimate handwritten love letter from Judy Garland to Frank Sinatra.   Not only is the handwriting unmistakably Judy Garland’s, but the signature is dead on from 1949 (when She had her first affair with Frank Sinatra).  And,  the original envelop the letter came in has “Frank Sinatra” on the envelop AGAIN in Ms Garland’s unmistakably, very distinctive handwriting.

To Frank Sinatra on embossed Judy Garland stationary: "Darling, My sudden departure is a complete surprise to me, and I'm deeply disapointed (sic) to have to miss our Monday & Tuesday date. However its imperative that I reach Boston by Sunday. I shall be at the Ritz-Carlton either under Mrs. Vincente Minnelli or in care of Carlton Alsop. You said today that you'd been negligent. But darling - that's so unimportant compared to the great amount of happiness you've given me. I shant forget the hours weve (sic) spent together - ever! I'll let you know how everything goes on this trip. In the meantime - take good care of yourself - be happy and have lots of fun and laughs. and for Gods sake - keep those wheels in your lil ole head down to the minimum. Drop me a line if you can because it will cheer me up a great deal. I hope to talk to you tommorow (sic) - but I wanted to write this in case we miss connections. Even if we do reach one another - I'll send it anyway. Its getting late - so Im gonna wash up, get my money, etc. Goodbye my darling - I hope we see each other soon. Please dont forget about me. Think about me because I shall be thinking of you always, Judy."  On Judy Garland's stationary with original envelope with Frank Sinatra written on envelop in Garland's hand. Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra remained good friends until her death in 1969.

On two occasions the two legendary singers were romantically involved. The first time was in 1949. Judy Garland was recovering from a nervous breakdown and the two went on a romantic rendezvous in the Hamptons. Garland was still married to Vincente Minnelli. The second was during one of many separations from Garland's third husband, Sid Luft in 1955. Given the reference to being registered as Mrs. Vincent Minnelli, it is justified to assume that this letter was written C. 1949 following the Hamptons rendezvous. Carlton Alsop who is also referenced in the letter was a radio & film producer and radio announcer who in 1947 married Sylvia Sidney. Carlton Alsop was a good friend and staunch supporter of Judy Garland throughout her life. See: Judy's Singing Again by Carlton Alsop. Photoplay, Nov. 1949. "Drop me a line if you can because it will cheer me up a great deal" seems significant in that Garland was recovering from a breakdown. Note word "shant" and "for God's sake" familiar to anyone who ever seen Judy Garland interviewed will remember that she frequently used these expressions.

A Special Note on Authenticity.  Many of you have read some of the articles I have written on autograph and collectibles authenticity.    The most recent article addressed the issue of “credible” dealer certificates of authenticity.  You can read it here on this web site.   You will note I stressed the importance of a “standard” when it comes to authenticating autographs.  In the current state of the autograph collecting community, there are several services. Some reputable and others less reputable.   And, the only way to understand the difference is sheer experience. Meanwhile, the majority of the industry seems to have settled today on PSA or JSA as the most reliable services.

However, there is often much discussion about WHO within these organizations are actually doing the certifications and their level of expertise since the letters of authenticity from both do NOT identify a certification specialist.   That being said, it was decided this item deserved much more then an anonymous certification from someone who may not have a high level of expertise with Judy Garland. Therefore, I contacted someone who probably has more expertise with Judy Garland’s autograph and handwriting then anyone in the autograph industry. She is the author of the Judy Garland Signature Study that appeared in Autograph Collector Magazine in 2008.  It is by far the most accurate and in-depth study ever done on this entertainment icon. Extraordinary Autographed Photo
Acquired & Witnessed In Person

Recently, we were able to acquire a beautiful Frank Sinatra signed 8x10" photo that came from his stage manager (who was featured in Autograph Collector Magazine in 1998 about his relationship with Frank Sinatra and the several items he had Frank autograph).  This particular photo has a note on the back stating where it was signed in his presence by Frank Sinatra at Royal Albert Hall, in the UK. The back note was signed by the stage manager .  You die hard Sinatra collectors probably know who he is.  Provenance that far exceeds the opinion of any experts.  I even contacted the stage manager recently and he responded via email  , “It is legit, The photo was signed backstage at Royal Albert Hall, in the UK.”.  

*Also, in person autograph seekers who have ever acquired Sinatra will tell you that he always signed these Tuxedo photos vertically on the white shirt.

I have even seen photos signed for friends that had the Sinatra “secretarial” signature.  But, to have ALL THREE "Rat Pack" members on the same photo is UNHEARD of. . Autographed Jewish Program Dedicated in His Honor

The Adventures of Nasr Ed-Din program from June 26, 1965 has a very bold signature of the legendary entertainer in blue pen in a perfect location.  The play was done in Israel "In Honour Of Frank Sinatra Home Dedication".......The foldover program has list of cast members inside, along with a synopsis of the story.  In a  book by Sinatra's former valet George Jacobs (great stories.....), he said that Frank was very interested and involved in the Jewish cause, donating a lot of money for their people.  The program has a very high-quality rough finish, measures 5x9" and is in flawless condition.  The signature is a solid 9.5/10 and matches exemplars of that time period.  A historical piece of Frank Sinatra/Jewish culture memorabilia.

Frank Sinatra was a frequent performer and guest of the Copacabana in NY City in the 1940s and early 50s.  Here is a really nice vintage menu from that legendary club, authentically signed on the reverse in large bold pencil “Frank Sinatra”.  The autographed was acquired in person in 1947 and is consistent with his style signature from the mid-late 1940s.  Menu card is 6.25 x 10”, hence you can see the signature is an incredibly large 3-4” long!  Great piece of Sinatra, music and Hollywood history.

"Kings Go Forth"

1957 - Vintage signed document, eight pages, 8.5 x 11, on onion skin paper, August 20, 1957. Acting as an executive on behalf of Sinatra's company Eton Productions, Sinatra employs Frank Ross as producer for the film "Kings Go Forth", offering Ross a compensation of $6,250 per working week. Nicely signed by Sinatra, along with Ross, on the final page in black ink. Well preserved and in overall fine condition.

- A Spectacular vintage signed photo, with early-mid 1940's signature -.

Here is an outstanding 8 1/2" X 11" black and white photo of the great Frank Sinatra and Walter Winchell, AUTHENTICALLY SIGNED BY BOTH! The scan doesn't do this item justice but this photo was signed for a famous dancer of the time, "Joy" (don't know her last name). Frank Sinatra's signature is VERY SLIGHTLY smeared from the wet ink. That said, it is one of the nicest Sinatra signatures we have seen. Walter Winchell's endorsement reads, "To Joy - Who isn't very!!! Walter Winchell. Correction to Joy - Who is hardly any! W.W.". It appears that the pen Winchell was initially using ran out of ink so he switched to another pen to complete his signing. VERY RARE COLLECTOR'S PIECE! Both autographs are GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC FOR LIFE! I

The bag is about 16-18” long. 

Now, this bag is accompanied by very solid provenance. A letter detailing it’s history from the son of the man who was Frank Sinatra’s financial manager for over 35 years until Mr Sinatra’s passing.  The letter of provenance states the bag was “personally “ given to this man who gave it to his son (now a Doctor).  The letter ALSO come with a notarized affidavit attesting to the authenticity and truthfulness of the letter of provenance.

RARE Autographed Jilly's Menu

The long and close relationship between Sinatra and Jilly Rizzo was widely known. This is an incredible piece. An Authentically Autographed menu from Jilly's. Frank Sinatra favorite lounge in which he frequented when he was in New York. To acquire a postively genuine Frank Sinatra autograph is rare and difficult alone, but to acquire on a historically significant piece like a Jilly's menu is nearly unheard of. This piece was acquired in-person.

*Also, for those who have never researched Mr Sinatra's signing habits, it is estimated about 90% of the autographs on the market are secretarial signed or outright forgery. On eBay the percentage is even higher, about 99% of all Sinatra autographs on eBay are fake. Over the past 11 years on eBay I estimate one out of every 100 autographs posted, I find one consistent with his authentic signature.

Mike and his wife Lynn stoppe din Jilly's in the late 60's. I acquired this menu from Mike and he states "One evening in the late 60's while in New York City with friends they stopped in Jilly's.Blue eyes himself walked in - Lynn jumped up with her menu and you can see the rest of it on the menu". On the bottom of the front there is a "printed" autograph, i.e. "This is my hangout too Frank Sinatra". Above that he authentically signs in ball point pen, "Lynn - Love and XXXXX Frank Sinatra". MIke's friend, who introduced me to Mike states Lynn was a real looker (she passed away a couple years ago). Apparently, SInatra realy took notice to her. Also, included is a nice handwritten note from Mike describing the encounter with Sinatra as he remembers 40 years ago.

Below is additional historical information on Frank Sinatra and his best friend Jilly Rizzo.

In the mid-1960's, Frank's favorite New York bar was Jilly's Saloon (256 West 52nd Street - currently closed). Sinatra met Jilly in Miami Beach when performing at the Fontainebleau. They hit it off immediately.

Ermenigildo Rizzo (May 6, 1917 – May 6, 1992), nicknamed Jilly, was an American restaurateur and entertainer. A long time friend of Frank Sinatra, Rizzo made cameo appearances in several of his films. He was also a frequent guest on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, where he would recite one liners in his monotone New York accent. During the 1970s, his night-club was torn down and replaced with Dean Martin's restaurant, Dino's.

On May 6, 1992, Rizzo was killed in a car accident when he was hit by a drunk driver on his 75th birthday in Rancho Mirage, California. He is buried near Sinatra in the Desert Memorial Park in Palm Springs, California.

Frank Sinatra mentions Jilly in a number of his recordings:

• Jilly's Restaurant is mentioned twice in his and Sammy Davis Jr.'s song "Me and My Shadow".
• At the beginning of the album Sinatra at the Sands, Frank jokingly welcomes his Las Vegas audience to "Jilly's West."
• In his cover version of "Mrs. Robinson", he changes the name "Jesus" to "Jilly."
  In the 1969 song "Star!", Frank sings, "If they've got a drink with her name in Jilly's Bar, the chances are, the lady's a Star!"
• Actor/comedian Brad Garrett told some funny stories about being Frank Sinatra's opening act, and how Jilly temporarily fired him for allegedly making a bad joke about Frank. Jilly allegedly sent him, as a punishment, to open for Liza Minnelli.
• Jilly appears as a bartender in The Manchurian Candidate where one of his stories sets off Laurence Harvey into a hypnotic trance.

Signed In-person Copacabana Program - 1950

This extraordinary piece belongs in the Frank Sinatra Museum. An incredible signature on a historical Copacabana Program from 1950. But, it doesn’t end there with this magnificent treasure. It comes with unquestionable provenance.

In 1950 two sisters who were big Frank Sinatra fans were invited by Frank himself to join him at the famous Copacabana in New York City in April 1950. Well not only did they go to watch him perform but he sat with them. This autographed program, with a huge 5” dark, bold fountain pen signature, comes with a copy of the newspaper photo of the sisters, Albina and Ann with guess who in between them. The caption below the photo discusses their relationship with Frank Sinatra. Also, included is a notarized Certificate of Authenticity from Albina’s daughter who I acquired this from.

WOW! In the 1940’s a couple was at the Copacabana in New York and had an encounter of a lifetime with the most famous singer of all time at the most famous Night Club. The result was a historic in-person autograph on a historical relic, an original Copacabana napkin. If you are looking for the ultimate Sinatra autograph, on the ultimate vintage, historical piece, this is it! This museum quality piece has been Professionally BEAUTIFULLY Framed and matted with an original vintage photo from "Pal Joey". We created a DOUBLE matt for the napkin with a scanned copy of the front in left window and the Original autograph in the right window.

This wonderful, RARE, authentic, 1940s, Frank Sinatra autograph is on an original Copacabana Club cocktail napkin. The signature is in excellent plus condition; It and is clear and vivid and is signed in blue pen. The Copacabana napkin is also in excellent plus condition with only a small fold or wrinkle on the one corner (as can be seen in photo). It was kept flat all these years by the woman acquired it in person. She and her husband got the In-Person autograph when they met Frank Sinatra while at the Copacabana in New York City in the 1940s. Mr. Sinatra autographed it in front of them. It is a fine example of a 1940s Frank Sinatra signature. It has never been offered For Sale anywhere until now! It comes with a letter of provenance from the person I bought from who acquired from this lady. It also comes with another vintage napkin (unsigned) she collected from the Viking Hotel in Newport, RI during the 1940's. In their first film together, Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra are two sailors who use their leave time to pursue Kathryn Grayson, entertain a young boy, and dance, dance, dance... Highlights include Sinatra singing "I Fall in Love Too Easily" and Kelly's Mexican hat dance and duet with Jerry the mouse

MGM was intent on making the most of its hot new properties Kelly and Sinatra in this affable sailor saga. The stars' characters were created with maximum screen impact in mind, and were to be retained (with minor adjustments) in "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" and "On The Town". Gene Kelly plays Joe "Sea Wolf" Brady, the twinkle-eyed Irish womanizer who never quite seems to get a woman. Clarence "Brooklyn" Doolittle, Sinatra's screen persona, was put together as a blatant attempt to pander to his bobbysoxer following. He is the bashful, slightly geek ingénue, pushing his cuteness for all it's worth - "the romantical type fella".

"Anchors Aweigh" set the pattern for a whole assembly line of MGM musicals to come, and one could almost say it established an art-form. Kelly did the choreography, and his first-ever 'dream ballets', two of them, are on display here - the famous pas de deux with Jerry The Mouse, and the Zorro interlude. The dance sequences are brimming with innovative ideas - mixing human action with animation, artistic use of slow motion, 'playing' the items on the craft stall and bouncing on the beds in the servicemen's hostel.

Young Mister Sinatra, under a separate contract from the others, sings numbers specially written for him by Jules Styne and Sammy Cahn. By far the best of these formulaic boy-crooner ballads is the final one, "I Fall In Love Too Easily". Throughout the film, Frank sings in his upper register, aiming for a light ballad sound, and consequently not doing any justice to that reedy baritone voice.

This RARE invitation to the 40th anniversary party for Frank Sinatra could be just what you have been looking for. Measures about 9 1/4 inches by 6 3/4 inches. Made of plexiglass with a beautiful bas-relief of Frank. Reads: "Caesars Palace cordially invites you to a loving tribute to Frank Sinatra on the occasion of his fortieth year in show buisness, December 12, 1979 - Cocktails 7:00 PM, Anniversary Tribute 8:30 PM, Supper 11:45 PM. Caesars Palace Las Vegas, Nevada". Excellent condition except for a small scuff on Frank's right knee that is not very noticeable. I understand these were just made for invited guests of this event. I have never seen another one in over 25 years of collecting Frank SInatra memorabilia. Of course Sammy, Dean and Peter were there! . . For the ultimate Frank Sinatra collector.
