1951 - Nice lobby card featuring Wayne & O'Hara in a memorable romantic scene. They would soon discover they had great chemistry and would go on to make several movies together. This would turn out to be one of the most universally beloved John Wayne roles and films. Very good condition with minor soiling on borders.

* We have been fortunate enough to acquire complete lobby card set (of 8) including the Title Card. Fortunate because it usually takes us several years to even locate one lobby card!

The Quiet Man (1952) is director John Ford's epic romantic comedy - a loving, sentimental, nostalgic tribute to his Irish ancestry and homeland. A rich, beautifully-textured Technicolor presentation deserving of its Color Cinematography award, it was filmed mostly on location in Ireland, although some backdrops and background studio shots were obviously intermixed. Its screenplay was based on Frank Nugent's adaptation of Maurice Walsh's Saturday Evening Post 1933 short story Green Rushes. Ford considered the rollicking, comedy love story one of his favorite films.

[The memorable plot, about the collision course between an anti-materialistic, Irish-American boxer nicknamed 'Trooper Thornton' (Wayne) in the town of Innisfree in the land of his Irish birthplace and a local, mean bully (McLaglen) - further entangled when he falls in love with the man's fiesty, red-haired, materialistic sister (O'Hara) who refuses to consummate her marriage without her dowry (350 Irish pounds in gold), was inspired by a Celtic myth about a monumental battle between two sacred kings (gods) who annually fought for the affections of a queen (or goddess).]

The famous director of westerns had already won Best Director Academy Award Oscars for three previous non-Western films - The Informer (1935), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and How Green Was My Valley (1941). This sentimental film, Ford's first 'romantic love story,' received a total of seven Academy Awards nominations (including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor - Victor McLaglen, Best Screenplay - Frank Nugent, Best Art Direction, and Best Sound) and won two Oscars: Best Cinematography - Winton Hoch and Archie Stout, and Ford (at 57 years of age) won his fourth and final Best Director Oscar, establishing a record that is still unbeaten.

Because the film was an ambitious, personal pet project and not one of Ford's typical westerns, he was unable to find financial backing from the major Hollywood studios, so he turned to Republic Pictures, a smaller studio regarded as the studio for B-pictures and low-budget westerns. After the financial and critical success of Rio Grande (1950) for the studio, the third of Ford's 'cavalry trilogy,' he convinced Republic Pictures to support him for his next riskier film - an Irish "Taming of the Shrew" tale that was remarkably similar in plot. He brought the same stock company of actors from his western - John Wayne, Victor McLaglen, and Maureen O'Hara - to Ireland to film his humorous, epic romance. In the seventeen years of Republic's existence, it was the first film for the studio that was nominated for Best Picture

Here is an extremely rare 1940's re-release John Wayne insert movie poster from "Red River Range". Great vintage western graphics. Very good condition, with a couple minor scraps, one to the top of "Duke's" hat on bottom image, which could be easily restored with minor professional touch up. Any paper from this title rarely appears on the market. The largest movie poster auction house has never had this particular insert. . (we originally thought this was the 1938 release and had it priced at $750, we have adjusted the price accordingly)

Rare and Important Signed Autographed Letter

Incredible Genuine Autographed letter by John Wayne dated November 3, 1976. John Wayne often had secretaries sign mostly photos for him. However, we have conducted extensive research on this letter and the signature and have concluded this is absolutely his authentic signature. In addition, this letter is on his heavy personal stationary. Also the letter comes with the original envelop also post dated November 5, 1976 and has "John Wayne" raised embossed on it. We have never seen a letter from him come in the original post dated, personal stationary envelop in 30 years of collecting.

That said, what makes this an even more extraordinary letter is the very personal content where he mentions his poor health and also Frank Sinatra. It has often been printed that John Wayne and Frank Sinatra did not have much of a relationship or even a strained relationship after John Wayne punched out Sinatra’s bodyguard in a Las Vegas hotel. However , this letter contradicts those rumors.

The letter comes from the estate of an Admiral who was personal friends with John Wayne. A true piece of Hollywood history from the hand of one of its most immortal icons. Deserving of a museum! Guaranteed Authentic for Life.

Film Review:
Many consider “The Searchers” not only John Wayne's best performance and overall film, but one of the best films in Cinematic history. Below is a review posted on IMDB:

The Searchers is perhaps John Ford's greatest film. The character studies are rich and complex and never too revealing, adding mystery and depth. The location in Utah's Monument Valley is magnificent. The Technicolor is simply stunning. And of course, the story set a standard for all action movies to come. The plot is simple and engaging and the subplot allows us to take a break from the relentless search. John Wayne's portrayal of Ethan Edwards is memorable. The dark, anti-hero persona gives the movie an edge not seen in those days. Jeffrey Hunter (Martin Pauly) and the rest of the cast give solid performances that are very natural and spirited. All of this is credited to the brilliant directing of John Ford. It is a great movie to watch. It is a great outdoor movie that should be seen on a big screen.

People say that this movie is very racist and stereotype Indians. I disagree. I think this movie is about racism, period. Both races are ruthless and barbaric in this movie. Let's take a look:

1. The calvary massacres an Indian village.

2. Ethan's hatred of Indians consumes him. But his hatred has a reason. And he is not naturally racist.

3. Ethan is a loner, hated and feared by his own people.

4. When Ethan and Marty are hiding out in the canyons, they shoot the Indians in the back as they retreat. Not very noble, is it?

5. Ethan shoots three white men in the back during a shootout. I guess Ethan can do it to his own people as well!

6. When Ethan sees a group of tortured white women who were rescued from the hands of "savage" Indians, he fears for the worst. But when Lucy is found, she looks well and cared for. Ethan, upset with this unexpected result, decides to kill Lucy because she has turned 'injun.'

7. Marty accidentally marries an Indian woman. Although ridiculed by Ethan, the Indian woman is portrayed favorably throughout the film.

8. Marty and a friend fight for Laurie's love (Marty's fiancée). It is a civilized fight among gentlemen. Ethan and Marty meet with Scar, the Indian chief who abducted Lucy. Scar realizes who they are but does not kill them on the spot. Why? It is a Commanche code of honor not to kill someone when he is at a disadvantage.

9. Both races are good and evil in this movie. Ethan and Scar are both driven by revenge. One dies in the end, the other continues to live a life of a loner, dead in the eye of society.

There are many reasons why I love The Searchers. It is a very simple story, yet says a lot. It is very entertaining and never boring. Unless you are a meat-head who cannot handle anything except mindless action sequences, this is the movie that stands the test of time, up there with Citizen Kane, Vertigo and The Godfather.

Enjoy! Watch it on the big screen if possible. The special edition 2-Disc DVD set from Warner Brothers is an absolute must. If you are a fan, you will not believe your eyes when you see the new transfer. The film has been restored to its original VistaVision widescreen, color by Technicolor!

On a final note, the last scene is pure poetry. Truly one of the greatest moment in film's history. John Ford really struck gold with this one.

Here is a very scarce 1939 re-release Stone Litho one sheet for this very early John Wayne classic. Not only is the 1939 release a far superior artistically accomplished poster then the 1935 original release one sheet, but the 1939 re-release is much scarcer.

After John Wayne's huge success in "Stagecoach" in 1939, Monogram Pictures re-released all of his mid-1930s Monogram westerns, and created all new one-sheets for those re-releases. In almost all cases, these 1939 re-release posters are quite scarce and extremely difficult to obtain! That said, just look at the artwork for this gorgeous Hollywood treasure! Very good-excellent condition and has been professionally linen backed. With touch up to the fold lines' Just Gorgeous!

Between 1933 and 1935 a young John Wayne starred in sixteen low budget Westerns for Lone Star, a division of the poverty row Monogram studio. Posters for these films have always been the hardest to find for Wayne and Western collectors alike and this stone litho 1939 re-release one-sheet being one of the scarcest ( and by far much more beautiful then the 1935 release one sheet). In this film Wayne turns in one of his best early performances. One of the fun things about this move was the scene in the film where Indians, not the cavalry, arrive on horseback to rescue Wayne and save the day!

One of the earliest pieces we have ever acquired on Wayne. A striking insert image from one of his earliest movies. Highly scarce for any paper to surface on titles this early in his career. The Telegraph Trail (Warner Brothers, 1933). Insert (14" X 36").
Fantastic graphics adorn this early John Wayne B Western that cast the star as a cavalry scout that has to put a stop to the sabotage of the West's first telegraph system. Prior to professional restoration, this insert had fold wear, a tear at the center fold, a small chip at the left border, another small one in Wayne's left eye and in the lower right, and a diagonal cut at the top. It has a small surface abrasion in the lower right that occurred after restoration. This is one of the finest images of Wayne out there. Fine on Paper

It is also interesting to mention that John Wayne apparently became more humble later in life and thus appreciated his fans more in the 1970’s. Maybe success with his first battle with cancer caused him to have a new perspective on life. (which would unfortunately get him for good in 1979). Most of the genuine autographed John Wayne photos on the market which he usually dated are from the mid 1970’s.

Fort Apache is a 1948 western film directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and Henry Fonda. The film was the first of the director's "cavalry trilogy" and was followed by She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Rio Grande (1950), both starring Wayne. The story, which screenwriter James Warner Bellah based loosely on George Armstrong Custer and the Battle of Little Bighorn, as well as the Fetterman Massacre of 1866, was one of the first to present an authentic and sympathetic view of the Native Americans involved in the battle (Apache in the film, Sioux in the real battles).

The film was awarded the Best Director and Best Cinematography awards by the Locarno International Film Festival of Locarno, Switzerland.

Plot:
After the American Civil War, highly-respected veteran Captain Kirby York (John Wayne) is expected to replace the outgoing commander at Fort Apache, an isolated U.S. cavalry post. York had commanded his own regiment during the Civil War and was well-qualified to assume permanent command. To the surprise and disappointment of the company, command of the regiment was given to Lieutenant Colonel Owen Thursday (Henry Fonda). Thursday, a West Point graduate, was a general during the Civil War. Despite his Civil War combat record, Lieutenant Colonel Thursday lacks experience with the Indians he is expected to oversee, and is an arrogant and egocentric officer, though he professes that he is not a martinet.

Accompanying widower Thursday is his daughter, Philadelphia (Shirley Temple). She becomes attracted to Second Lieutenant Michael Shannon O'Rourke (John Agar), the son of Sergeant Major Michael O'Rourke (Ward Bond). The elder O'Rourke had won the Medal of Honor as a major with the Irish Brigade during the Civil War, entitling his son to enter West Point and become an officer. However, the class-conscious Thursday forbids his daughter to see someone he does not consider a gentleman.

The first time we have seen the half sheet and the artwork and graphics are terrific, even better than the one sheet, with scene photos inset throughout the poster. Verry good condition. Has been professionally linen backed. Has some darkening and wear on the right border.

Half Sheet (22x28"). John Ford's personal favorite of all of his films was "The Quiet Man." He had to wait a number of years before he could make the picture in his homeland of Ireland. The picture was a virtual "who's who" of Ford players, including John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen, and Ward Bond, and remains one of the director's masterpieces.

Also, has a small chip out of upper right corner, quite unnoticeable as it is on edge of the border and does not come near the image area. That said, it is in exceptional condition.

A classic collaboration between James Stewart as a city-bred lawyer, and John Wayne as a tough-as-nails gunslinger, who find common ground in opposing Lee Marvin's heinous Liberty Valance, a vicious outlaw who terrorizes the town of Shinbone. Directed by John Ford, this is one of the great classics of the Western genre. The poster offered here, a must for any serious Western collection

A beautiful one sheet with amazing artwork for this 1948 John Wayne western classic. . Excellent condition and has been professionally linen backked. This is only the second time we have acquired this one sheet movie poster in over 20 yeras of collecting.

Fort Apache is a 1948 western film directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and Henry Fonda. The film was the first of the director's "cavalry trilogy" and was followed by She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Rio Grande (1950), both starring Wayne. The story, which screenwriter James Warner Bellah based loosely on George Armstrong Custer and the Battle of Little Bighorn, as well as the Fetterman Massacre of 1866, was one of the first to present an authentic and sympathetic view of the Native Americans involved in the battle (Apache in the film, Sioux in the real battles).

The film was awarded the Best Director and Best Cinematography awards by the Locarno International Film Festival of Locarno, Switzerland.

Plot:
After the American Civil War, highly-respected veteran Captain Kirby York (John Wayne) is expected to replace the outgoing commander at Fort Apache, an isolated U.S. cavalry post. We called him Duke, and he was every bit the giant off screen he was on. Everything about him - his stature, his style, his convictions-conveyed enduring strength, and no one who observed, his struggle in those final days could doubt that strength was real. To many he was the consummate symbol of America. To others his onscreen presence will forever be unsurpassed. Whatever, you think of the Duke, we have since not seen anyone quite like him and most likely never will.

When he died on June 11, 1979 a Tokyo newspaper ran the headline, "Mr. America passes on."
"There's right and there's wrong," Duke said in THE ALAMO (1960). "You gotta do one or the other. You do the one and you're living. You do the other and you may be walking around but in reality you're dead." Duke Wayne symbolized just this, he could have left no greater legacy.

We are excited to offer this once in a lifetime opportunity. A fabulous historical document relating to one of the most significant movies in The Duke's illustrious career. Offered here is a three-page document, 8.5" x 11", 20th Century Fox letterhead, May 29, 1959. A formal amendment document in which the Fox agrees to postpone the filming of "North to Alaska" (referred to as "The Alaskans") so that Wayne could produce and star in the western classic "The Alamo". The document reads, in part: "The starting date for the motion picture tentatively entitled 'The Alaskans' was established as April 6, 1959...That said starting date shall be and the same is hereby postponed...In connection with said postponement it is agreed that you are contemplating the rendition of your services in connection with a motion picture entitled 'The Alamo'." Wayne would indeed follow through with the filming of "The Alamo", earning his first Oscar nomination for directing the film. The document is handsomely signed by Wayne on the final page in blue ink, with the signature projecting a strong "9-10" appearance. Some moderate toning to the document and light fading to the typing, none of which affects Wayne's signature or the document's overall fine appearance. Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication (JSA).

Breathtaking, extremely scarce lobby card from one of his earliest western classics. The bad news first. The white borders have been trimmed. So the size instead of 11x14" is 10x13". That being said the artwork is excellent condition and a stunning portrait of John Wayne. This gorgeous lobby card is about as amazing as any you will see for John Wayne westerns. AND, you are not likely to see this card appear on the market anytime soon as we could not find a history of it ever being sold by an auction house.

It's one of the best cards ever printed on Wayne and has only had the white border trimmed around the card, not affecting the artwork. That's Alberta Vaughn, veteran of over 130 films, as the love interest.

Both stuntmen, Reed Howes and Yakima Canutt (at desk) are pictured on this lovely card. It was during this time that Wayne met stuntman Yakima Canutt, and the two would become close friends for many years.

1951 - Nice lobby card featuring Wayne. O'Hara & Victor McLaglen in the memorable "introduction" scene they didn't go very well. They would soon discover they had great chemistry and would go on to make several movies together. This would turn out to be one of the most universally beloved John Wayne roles and films. Very good condition with minor soiling on borders.

* We have been fortunate enough to acquire complete lobby card set (of 8) including the Title Card. Fortunate because it usually takes us a long time to even locate one lobby card!
