Wonderful old cast iron Black Americana Cabin mechanical penny bank. Made in Cromwell, Ct. by J. & E. Stevens c.1885. . Place penny on top front of roof, pull lever and man flips up and kicks penny into bank. The bank measures 3 5/8" tall x 2 7/8" wide x 4 1/4" deep and is in very nice operating condition. The bank is in very nice working condition with nice paint and original coin trap. (see photo's)  VERY NICE!!   GUARANTEED  OLD AND ORIGINAL with No rust,  cracks, breaks or repairs.  And most important, 90-95% of original paint remaining!

As antique bank collectors know, the primary issue with antique cast iron bank value is amount of original paint. The difference in value between 10-50% or 50-90% remaining original paint if dramatic.

This is an evening scene with George scaling cards into a book held by little red devils. This poster is in vibrant blues, full of Geishas, Chinese lanterns, the Sphinx, Pyramids and the moon. Absolutely STUNNING VINTAGE ARTWORK!!

The poster is in excellent condition. It has been professionally linen backed. There are two slight creases over the head of the Geishas which occurred during printing and does not effect the beauty of the poster. A rare and highly desirable vintage poster with spectacular artwork and graphics!

Lincoln & Hamlin: Superb 1860 Campaign Two-Sided Ferrotype. 24mm. A beautiful ferrotype in choice condition featuring a portrait of a clean-shaven Lincoln with his running mate, Hannibal Hamlin, on the obverse. Bright and beautiful with only a minor nick to the right of Lincoln not affecting his image. 

Note:  The majority of these that appear on the market either have the images completely gone or severely disfigured.   This is an exceptionally nice, rarely seen  example!

Hartford, Connecticut, was the scene of the tragic Great Hartford Circus Fire. 135 people lost their lives when the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus tent caught fire. It would be more than 30 years before Ringling Bros. would return to Hartford, but never to the Barbour St. show grounds.

Truly Rare 1st Edition Charles Scribner's Sons The Rough Riders by Theodore Roosevelt published in 1899.  The account of Roosevelt's exploits with his band of Rough Riders during the Spanish American War. This is the sought after 1st edition with numerous real photos of Roosevelt and his men. The condition is very good, the cover shows only minimal marking and the spine is tight and straight. This account of future president T.R. is quite rare and the condition of this volume makes it even more desirable. I have seen 1st edition books  at rare booksellers sites on the web at over $1000.00 whose condition can not match this book. This is rare opportunity to add a fine example of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders to your collection.

Abraham Lincoln & Johnson Ferrotype Campaign Token

Incredible, Extremely Scarce - 1864 Lincoln & Johnson Ferrotype. Serious Lincoln collectors will appreciate the RARITY of this Historical Lincoln treasure. These "type" examples of a round, bearded 1864 Lincoln & Johnson ferro are much scarcer than the 1860 versions with Lincoln & Hamlin.

The major auction houses like Heritage Historical Signature auctions have recorded about ten Lincoln/Hamlin campaign tokens sold over the past five years. A Lincoln/Johnson 1864 Campaign token, ONLY ONE! And, that one is not even as rare as this token which has the "bearded Lincoln" image but has printed on the token "FOR PRESIDENT 1864" then on the ferrotype image "A. Lincoln" and on the reverse, "FOR VICE PRESIDENT 1864" , then on the image “A. Johnson”. The single 1864 campaign token that appeared on the market about 4 years ago did NOT have "FOR PRESIDENT” printed on it and it only had “Lincoln” without the first initial. This may be one of the very few of it’s kind in existence!

And, it is in amazing condition! NOTE: None of the typical image corrosion, scratches, pieces missing you normally see on these Lincoln campaign tokens.

UPDATE: NOT ONLY Amazing Condition, but possibly the BEST Condition Lincoln/Johnson campaign token in existence! Just remarkable. The Lincoln image is just Perfect! The Johnson has the slightest couple needle specs. It literally looks as though it had been put away for the past 150 years and accumulated dust around the edges of the token.

A truly rare and very important find!! A few months ago we acquired the more common Lincoln/Hamlin 1860 campaign token which sold within a day. This MUCH RARER gem is sure to not last long amongst our special clients who collect Historical & Abraham Lincoln artifacts

Circus Poster Lot (Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey, 1941). Poster (36" X 42"). Miscellaneous. This poster for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus touted the "Mr. and Mrs. Gargantua the Great" gorilla exhibit. The poster has light edge and fold wear, wrinkling, a couple of smudges, and a 6-inch scuff tear in the upper left. A snipe has been glued on for the June 28, 1941 show in Hawthorne, New York. There is a printer's union stamp and the year has been added in ink. Wonderful stone litho artwork of Mr. and Mrs. Gargantua. Fine/Very Fine.

This incredible rare vintage movie poster is truly an incredible find! The artwork and graphics on this aviation and all black cast poster is nothing less then breath-taking. When it comes to gorgeous artwork this may be one of the most spectacular posters we've ever acquired! But, don't take our word for it, look at the large photo image. And. this 83 year old poster is in amazingly excellent + condition (especially for three sheet which usually incur more wear and damage).

The Flying Ace (Norman, 1926). Three Sheet (41" X 81"). Black Films. Starring Lawrence Criner, Kathryn Boyd, Steve Reynolds, Boise De Legge, Harold Platts, Lions Daniels, and George Colvin. Directed by Richard E. Norman

Released in 1926, starring Lawrence Criner and Kathryn Boyd, two established Black actors, this film was a major hit for Norman Studios. Criner played a World War I fighter pilot who returns home a hero. Peg Reynolds was Criner's side kick and together they rescue Boyd and her father from railroad thieves. The film boasted death defying feats in "the greatest airplane thriller ever filmed," but in reality, Norman shot all the airplane scenes with the plane on the ground. Even so, the film was a sensation and grossed close to $20,000 through Norman's distribution efforts

Norman Studios of Florida was famous for their all-black-cast films in the 1920s and are remembered also for their gorgeous stone litho posters. This beautiful example 3 sheet stone litho poster, starring Lawrence Criner and Kathryn Boyd, was produced by the Richey Litho Co.,

Al Capp - "Daisy Mae"

A stunning limited edition, 149/250, "Daisy Mae" on canvas. Signed lower right "Al Capp '76". Really beautiful litho from one the legendary Cartoonists most famous characters created in the 1930's.

Beautiful DAISY MAE (Scraggs) was hopelessly in love with Dogpatch's most prominent bachelor Li'l Abner through the entire 43 year run of Al Capp's comic strip. During most of the epic Abner took Daisy for granted. He exhibited little romantic interest in her voluptuous charms (much of it visible daily thanks to her trademark polka-dot peasant blouse). In 1952 Abner reluctantly proposed to Daisy Mae to emulate the wedding of his comic strip ideel, Fearless Fosdick. Fosdick's own wedding to longtime fiancé Prudence Pimpleton turned out to be fake, but Abner and Daisy's ceremony, performed by Marryin' Sam, was "real." Once married, Abner became relatively domesticated and the two produced their only child, Honest Abe Yokum, in 1953.

Like Abner's Mammy Yokum and other wimmenfolk in Dogpatch, Daisy Mae did all the work, domestic and otherwise, while the menfolk generally did nothing whatsoever. Despite this near slavish role, Daisy Mae seldom complained, one of her countless virtues. Her blood family, The Scraggs, on the other hand, was as evil and bloodthirsty as could be imagined. Wild plot twists often took Daisy Mae to exotic locales and she was frequently wooed by rich and handsome men, but she always returned ---virtue intact--- to Dogpatch and her true, if worthless and undeserving, love.

Beautifully framed.

This is not the typical cardboard posters you see, with boring graphics but a full size poster made of vintage poster paper.

"I ALWAYS DID 'SPISE A MULE"

Great vintage MECHANICAL BANK...."I ALWAYS DID 'SPISE A MULE" in really nice condition with 50% original paint. The bank functions as designed. It has had a repair to the release mechanism and operates perfectly. NO other repairs or replaced parts. It has terrific character and charm with superb age related patina.

This wonderful vintage treasure was made by J & E STEVENS Co., Cromwell, Ct. based on a Patent No. 214,615 issued to James Bowen on April 22, 1879. It also has the ORIGINAL trap door (which is almost always missing) dated Feb 1875. Size 10" long.

This bank was issued in two versions, this was the Original and most Rare version. The second was a more commonly seen Mule Kicking Boy on Bench released nearly 20 years later in 1897. That version is the one most seen, including on Ebay. However, this version rarely appears on the market.

I have included a couple of links for reference, where this same bank appeared on the market, including a recent major antique bank auction that took place a few months ago. You'll see this same bank sold for $2300 and $4800.

Minstrel Show Poster (Unknown, Early 1900s). Very rare Poster (28" X 41.5").

Turn of the century stone litho poster for the Minstrel Show. Very good condition with some fold separtion and age wear.

History:
The minstrel show, or minstrelsy, was an American entertainment consisting of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music, performed by white people in blackface or, especially after the Civil War, black people in blackface.

Minstrel shows lampooned black people in mostly disparaging ways: as ignorant, lazy, buffoonish, superstitious, joyous, and musical. The minstrel show began with brief burlesques and comic entr'actes in the early 1830s and emerged as a full-fledged form in the next decade. By the turn of the century, the minstrel show enjoyed but a shadow of its former popularity, having been replaced for the most part by vaudeville. It survived as professional entertainment until about 1910; amateur performances continued until the 1960s in high schools, fraternities, and local theaters. As blacks began to score legal and social victories against racism and to successfully assert political power, minstrelsy lost popularity.

The typical minstrel performance followed a three-act structure. The troupe first danced onto stage then exchanged wisecracks and sang songs. The second part featured a variety of entertainments, including the pun-filled stump speech. The final act consisted of a slapstick musical plantation skit or a send-up of a popular play. Minstrel songs and sketches featured several stock characters, most popularly the slave and the dandy. These were further divided into sub-archetypes such as the mammy, her counterpart the old darky, the provocative mulatto wench, and the black soldier. Minstrels claimed that their songs and dances were authentically black, although the extent of the black influence remains debated. Spirituals (known as jubilees) entered the repertoire in the 1870s, marking the first undeniably black music to be used in minstrelsy.

Blackface minstrelsy was the first distinctly American theatrical form. In the 1830s and 1840s, it was at the core of the rise of an American music industry, and for several decades it provided the lens through which white America saw black America. On the one hand, it had strong racist aspects; on the other, it afforded white Americans a singular and broad awareness of significant aspects of black-American culture

Scarce, Original, Vintage 1934 Acme Press/Wire photo featuring John “Dillinger sweetheart” Mary Longnecker. According to attached promo paper, “This photo was found in Dillinger’s watch” after he had been slain in Chicago. (The top part of the promo paper mistakenly identifies the woman as Evelyn Frechetti, this is corrected by additional promo papers attached below the first. See images below.)

Over the years I have never been attracted to collecting personal artifacts like celebrity clothing, strands of hair and other personal articles because unlike autographs there is really nothing that can be authenticated (unless DNA is involved). However, I am so impressed by the extraordinary provenance that comes with this historical item it was very easy for me to get excited. Below is the detailed description from the original owner.

Outlaw History for sale: this is a 1" swatch cut from the actual death trousers worn by Clyde Barrow on the day he and Bonnie Parker were ambushed near Gibsland, La. on May 23, 1934.

Clyde Barrows trousers and shirt that he wore that day were kept in the Barrow family until Butterfield & Butterfield auctioned off the bullet riddled shirt on April 14th 1997 in San Francisco - it fetched $85,000 (purchased by Whiskey Pete's Casino who also owns the actual death car) and the global media coverage was extensive. The trousers were cut into 870 swatches and affixed to ornate parchment like certificates numbered and hand signed by the late Marie Barrow, Clyde's sister. She co-authored the book, "The Family Story of Bonnie and Clyde," with Phillip Steele (book not included). I was Marie Barrow's business partner and we used to sell these swatch certificates through Old West magazine ads, Autograph Collector magazine ads, and memorabilia & gun shows until she passed away in 1999. This is one of the few of these limited edition certificates left. Near mint condition accompanied with a copy of the notarized certificate by Marie Barrow attesting to the authenticity of the item and the history of the artifact. Also included is a copy of a Tulsa World newspaper article interviewing Marie and making mention of her guest appearance at the Tulsa Book & Paper Fair on November 21, 1998 and stating that she would be selling the signed, limited edition swatch certificates!

** UPDATE: As many of you know this is the 50th anniversary of B&C's death. Hence, two biographies were just released including the critically acclaimed "Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde" by Jeff Guinn. AND, in this book on page 259 it mentions this very "pants swatch" and how Clyde's sister partnered with a memorabilia dealer to cut his "death pants" into 800 pieces and offer each with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Yes, these swatches are mentioendin a Bonnie & Clyde best seller. Offered is number 236 out of the edition of 870. Size of certificate is 8 1/2 X 11".

Soldier with Hardee Hat

Rare Civil War tintype, tinted standing soldier, hardee hat, long coat. Cased and brass matted standing soldier with pipe in mouth and letter in hand with hardee hat and long grey confederate coat, tinted image. 3.25"x2.75". Leather Case cover is separated but complete.

The Hardee hat, also known as the Model 1858 Dress Hat and sometimes nicknamed the "Jeff Davis", was the regulation dress hat for enlisted men in the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. However, most soldiers found the black felt hat to be too hot and heavy and shunned its use, preferring a kepi or slouch hat. The most prominent wearers of the Hardee hat were the soldiers of the Union "Iron Brigade", also known as the Black-Hat Boys.

The hat apparently was named after William J. Hardee, a career officer in the U.S. Army from 1838 until resigning his commission on January 31, 1861. Hardee was Commandant of Cadets at West Point from 1856 to 1860. He was lieutenant colonel of the 1st U.S. Cavalry until just before the war. In 1855, he published Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics for the Exercise and Manoeuvres of Troops When Acting as Light Infantry or Riflemen, popularly known as Hardee's Tactics, which became the best-known drill manual of both sides of the Civil War. He joined the Confederate States Army in March 1861 and eventually became a lieutenant general and corps commander.

U.S. Army regulations specified that the hat should be adorned with a brass hat device and a wool hat cord denoting the branch of service of the wearer: blue for infantry, red for artillery, yellow for cavalry. The brim was to be pinned up on the right side for the cavalryman, on the left for foot soldiers.

John Dillinger
Genuine Original vintage 1934 Wanted Poster

Here is an 8X8 vintage ORIGINAL wanted poster issued by the FBI in 1934 for the arrest of John Dillinger.

NOTE: Not a copy often seen on the internet auction sites. Over the past few years, we have acquired the knowledge HOW to differentiate between the Authentic Wanted Poster and the reproductions primarily found on Ebay (which of course sell for what appears to be a bargain). We look for, acquire and ONLY sell ORIGINALS. If you ever had the chance to own both the reproductions AND the Genuine Originals (we have) you would be able to see and feel the difference between the two.

Issued by the Dept. of Justice for John Dillinger (includes his finger prints). It is on original D.O.J. paper stock and in excellent condition. Contains their criminal records, relatives, descriptions of each etc.

Very RARE and HIGHLY DESIRABLE piece!! It is getting MORE & MORE Difficult to find authentic specimens of these wanted posters, since 90% of them on the market (particularly Ebay) are reproductions.

Civil War Tintype
Great image with sword & brass buttons

Terrific and original circa 1860's Civil War era tintype of a soldier in uniform holding his long sword. He appears to be a Union soldier and is wearing a full uniform and has a long sword, scabbard, military cap and his jacket has many brass buttons. It measures 3.25" high x 2.75" wide and has a bronze mat. It is in fair condition but has some flaking on the right and is a darker image, see the photos. The back is marked "J.D. Herriott 1862".

Civil War soldier, Quabbin (Enfield, MA) family
1/4 Plate Tinted Tin Type

Exceptional wonderful clear image is of a Civil War Soldier from Enfield, Massachusetts. We know that because we discovered, upon removal from the case, "Hill Family, Enfield Mass." scratched into the very bottom of the photo. This is not to the detriment of the image, as it is on the very bottom, and does not show when inside the highly decorative Gutta Percha case.

The one-fourth plate image depicts a handsome young soldier, seated in front of a painted patriotic military camp scene. He is wearing a sky blue enlisted man's trousers, frock coat, with a medal of ID badge pinned to the front, and a forage cap.

The image is in excellent condition; there are three tiny scratches above his forage cap.

As you will note, there is minor wear to the case, mainly on the corners of the back, but it is in fact minor.

This piece of history should appeal to any collector of militaria, photography, or Quabbin history. (The town of Enfield abolished in 1938 to allow the Swift River Valley to be flooded, thereby creating the Quabbin Reservoir, which provides water to Boston.)

Antique French Carriage Clock
Circa 1880
With Original Wood/letaher case

Brass-and-glass carriage clock of Paris origin circa 1880s. It features a high-grade time/strike/repeater/alarm movement. The case style is referred to as "Gorge".

The enamel dial has a small chapter ring beneath the center post with a small single hand to set the alarm activation feature. A button on the top-front of the case is pressed to activate, on the gong, a "repeat" of the last-hour.

The clock runs a week on a single winding and strikes the hours and the half-hours. All four side-glasses and the (oval) top-glass are beveled and all original to the clock.

The only thing not original in the clock are 4 teeth on the winding-barrel of the alarm train. Sometime in the past it "skipped"a tooth, and bent-over the 3 adjacent teeth. Mr. Richard Ketchen, arguably the finest clock mechanism restorer in the country, replaced the 4 damaged teeth for me. I have a pretty good eye for such things and I can't find them! It was also dis-assembled, overhauled, and cleaned and oiled during the same period of 2000.

It's winding-key is the only key I've ever seen with the clock serial number stamped on it! It's companion travel box is wood (much of the leather has worn off over the last 125 years) and velvet-lined. The hinged lid has a button which can be pressed to activate the repeater when the clock is in the box (in your carriage, of course!) The front of the box has a slide-up door which enables you to see the clock dial inside.

Clock was purchased from an elderly lady on the South Shore in 1999. She was somehow connected to the Studley family of Hanover . David Studley was a well-known clock maker in the late 18th, early 19th C.

The clock is a fine example of the best quality clock making in Europe in the heyday of the French clock industry. A Exceptional Time Piece used in the horse and buggy carriage in the 1880's.

Civil War discharge of Giles W. Avery, September 8, 1862. In the 1870’s the Ferguson’s married into the Avery family. This Civil War era full plate tin type photo of Giles Avery (bottom middle) and group of uniformed men and his Civil War discharge have been with the Ferguson family until consigned to auction in January 2007. The family is from Groton, CT. The tin type is in very good condition with excellent contrast for this period photography. The subtle red in the photo is NOT part of the photo but glare and reflection in the digital image of the original photo. A historical Civil War lot grouping.

Hubert Castle, "King of the Tight Wire," is shown in mid-air, during one of his spectacular feats of acrobatic agility on this fantastic circus poster. An unrestored poster with signs of wear, primarily some age related staining on left border.  Otherwise, quite nice condition for an 80 year old ppster.

In overall very good condition. This ribbon was attached to a piece of black felt. We removed the felt save the tiny area on the reverse where it was attached.
