This ORIGINAL, silver gelatin photographic still was printed to promote the first theatrical release of the 1949 classic American, western feature, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON. It is an incredibly detailed, high quality, high contrast image of John Wayne and his co-stars Ben Johnson and real WWI Vet Rudy Bowman. Size 7.5 x 9" (original size not trimmed)

The lot also includes the RKO Feature Service folder (which I have Never seen for sale in 30 years of collecting), that contained the still, and two descriptive sheets pertaining to the still and other publicity material distributed for the film

The film stars John Wayne, as Captain Nathan Brittles, with Joanne Dru, John Agar, Ben Johnson, Harry Carey, Jr., Victor McLaglen, Mildred Natwick, George O'Brien, Arthur Shields, Michael Dugan, Tom Tyler, Noble Johnson, and the subject of the listed still, Rudy Bowman. It was directed by the legendary John Ford.

Be sure to read the detailed descriptive sheet that discusess the life and career of RUDY BOWMAN, the fallen calvary man in the still, who was struck mute during service in the First World War, but persevered in his desire to be an actor!

The single weight, glossy, silver gelatin photographic still is an ORIGINAL still, printed from the original negative, at the time the film was first released (1940). It is NOT a reprint, restrike, reproduction, re-issue, or commercial item available to the general public. It was created to be displayed in the movie theatre lobby to publicize the film.

Provenance of the Movie Stills

W. Ward Marsh (1893-1971) was the film critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper from 1919 until his retirement in 1970. In 1919 Marsh wrote his first of 23,000 movie reviews for the Plain Dealer. As the area's movie trivia authority, Marsh wrote and produced a local television movie quiz program in the 1950's called "Lights, Camera, Question." He also taught "The History, Enjoyment, and Criticism of the Movie" course at Western Reserve's Cleveland College. In the 1960's, Marsh fought a losing battle against the screen's increasing sexual permissiveness. His scathing review of a film titled THE LOVERS in 1959, contributed to the prosecution of its exhibitor, Nico Jacobellis of the Heights Art Theatre, for obscenity. In a landmark censorship ruling in 1964, the U.S. Supreme Court declared the film was not obscene. Marsh died less than a year after his retirement in 1970. His library, and photographic and memorabilia archives were given to the proprietor of Cleveland's finest bookstore and later acquired by a long time collector

THE Famous shot taken at Dearborn Station in downtown Chicago by the Chicago Tribune of Al Capone is found on this RARE Vintage 1932 ORIGINAL News Service Photograph. This renowned shot of the most infamous of gangsters has been seen in countless books, manuscripts, publications, films and documentaries over the years. It depicts what appears to be a confident Capone, the Don of the Chicago Outfit looking as if he is still ‘the man’, on top of the world, as he smiles for the camera surrounded by intimidating men in hats and trench coats.

In reality, these were not Capone’s men but rather an army of U.S. Marshals who are escorting the convicted gangster through the train station as they prepared to board a train that will take the convoy to the U.S. Federal Penitentiary in Atlanta. Capone who appears free to roam is actually handcuffed, his hands are in his pocket to purposely conceal the irons that link him to a petty thief, one Vito Morici who was also heading to the big house as well. As they walked through the crowd, Capone who was always conscious about his public ‘image’, indicating to Morici’s topcoat, said to him, "Throw it over your arms so nobody see the handcuffs".

This unique, vintage 1932 silver-gelatin photograph taken by a staff photographer at the Chicago Tribune is one of the few surviving rare, period originals and is unique as it was the actual one kept on file at the Tribune and used in their papers at the time the event happened. The original newspaper clipping from when the photo appeared the following day, along with a MAY 4 1932 date stamp is on the verso of this specimen measuring 7-1/4" x 10". In addition, it was also used in publication on at least two other occasions some six decades later with two other newspaper clippings affixed on the verso. The photograph has some wear around the perimeter but the central image is relatively unaffected and been preserved nicely. One of the finest Capone photographs extant.

Incredible piece of History!

Very rare original First Generation wire/press release photos of the Hindenburg disaster. We just acquired a collection of original Hindenburg photos taken on the day of the explosion in Lakehurst NJ. These are photos used on the very day of the crash, May 6, 1937. It was a day that will forever be part of the history books. And, this photo captured that catastrophic event and were immediately used for publication in newspapers around the world. The back of each has the original new wire snipe along with the original ACME Newspictures stamps and United Press Newspictures stamps.

This particular photo has a wire/press release snipe dated 1/10/38, six months after the Hindenburg crash. Probably re-used for a news story post crash date. As you can see it is a spectacular image of the Hindenburg . The press release snipe mentions this photo won a best photography of 1937 award. Just incredible!

It is an original oversized studio photo with the press release snipe on the back along with the stamp date 1932. This photo was actually used for press release in 1932 to promote the film.

We have been fortunate to recently acquire two vintage original Tarzan "filming” photos. Both are wire service/press release photos with original provenance, dates and historical snipes on the back.

The news snipe folds over the front, however it is NOT glued or fixed.

The second is a Paparazzi photo catching the recluse Garbo by surprise coming out of an elevator in 1949. Garbo despised the media and the human population for that matter. She obviously aggressively pursue fame in the movies but than has distain for her celebrity status.

Vintage black and white, single weight, glossy still. Following Lon Chaney's sudden death, Carl Laemmle had to find a replacement to star in Dracula. The role finally went to Bela Lugosi, a Hungarian actor who had been portraying Bram Stoker's undead count on the stage. Lugosi made the role his own forever cementing his legacy as the screen's greatest King of the Undead! This image was used in the creation of the best lobby card in the original set and features Lugosi seducing the innocent Helen Chandler by feeding upon her blood.

Photo detail and contrast is stunning! I have never seen an original Dracula, Lugosi photo with such beautiful detail. One of the best Lugosi "Dracula" original photos you will ever see!

Excellent condition with some corner wear. Back has original Studio stamp promoting "Bela Lugosi in Dracula a Universal Release". Also some pencil notations on back of Dracula stars, an d a couple collector stamps.

EXTRAORDINARY Vintage 1900’s ORIGINAL Photograph depicting Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Exceptional 8" x 10" news service photo issued by Underwood & Underwood when TR and his men met for a reunion to remember the Spanish American War of 1898. Original Underwood & Underwood press stamp on the upper left on the verso and underneath the various labels applied there over the years as the photo was subjected to publication use. In upper left in pencil notation "Apr 1905", which would suggest Roosevelt posed for this photo as President.

Also note that the photo was once part of the famous Bettmann Archives (the amazing collection put together by Otto Ludwig Bettmann, acquired by Corbis and now owned by Microsoft’s Bill Gates). A wonderful antique photo with a pedigree to boot !

This particular photo has a wire/press release snipe dated 5/6/37, the day of the Hindenburg crash. The newswire snipe on the back says “you can see a gentleman shaking the fire off of his clothing…” Amazing photo shot of a Hindenburg survivor! Just incredible!
