We called him Duke, and he was every bit the giant off screen he was on. Everything about him - his stature, his style, his convictions-conveyed enduring strength, and no one who observed, his struggle in those final days could doubt that strength was real. To many he was the consummate symbol of America. To others his onscreen presence will forever be unsurpassed. Whatever, you think of the Duke, we have since not seen anyone quite like him and most likely never will.

When he died on June 11, 1979 a Tokyo newspaper ran the headline, "Mr. America passes on."
"There's right and there's wrong," Duke said in THE ALAMO (1960). "You gotta do one or the other. You do the one and you're living. You do the other and you may be walking around but in reality you're dead." Duke Wayne symbolized just this, he could have left no greater legacy.

Offered here is a three-page document, 8.5" x 11", 20th Century Fox letterhead, May 29, 1959. A formal amendment document in which the Fox agrees to postpone the filming of "North to Alaska" (referred to as "The Alaskans") so that Wayne could produce and star in the western classic "The Alamo". The document reads, in part: "The starting date for the motion picture tentatively entitled 'The Alaskans' was established as April 6, 1959...That said starting date shall be and the same is hereby postponed...In connection with said postponement it is agreed that you are contemplating the rendition of your services in connection with a motion picture entitled 'The Alamo'." Wayne would indeed follow through with the filming of "The Alamo", earning his first Oscar nomination for directing the film. The document is handsomely signed by Wayne on the final page in blue ink, with the signature projecting a strong "9-10" appearance. Some moderate toning to the document and light fading to the typing, none of which affects Wayne's signature or the document's overall fine appearance. Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication (JSA).
