Steve McQueen

Very Rare Vintage Autograph

McQueen and his motorcycle stuntman in Germany filming The Great Escape

One of the most revered actors of his generation, Steve McQueen is remembered for his wild antics and lifestyle and is best remembered for his roles in Papillon, Bullitt, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Sand Pebbles, The Cincinnati Kid, The Great Escape, and The Magnificent Seven.

For several years we have had countless requests for a Genuine Steve McQueen autograph. And in 30 years collecting, this is the first we have ever acquired.  Not just an autograph but extraordinary direct connection to "The Great Escape".

Here is an incredible piece of Hollywood history. Acquired during the filming of what many believe one of his very best performances, “The Great Escape”. A highly scarce Steve McQueen autograph with an exceptionally  unusual long personal inscription to someone who apparently provided cooking for McQueen and his “Great Escape” stuntmen.

Vintage off-white 7.5 x 9.75 guest book page from the Hotel Grunwalder Weinbauer restaurant in Munich, Germany, signed and inscribed in blue ballpoint, “My very best wishes, and continued success to the man that makes the mashed potatoes, Steve McQueen,” and also signed by his wife Neile McQueen. Reverse is signed by four of McQueen’s stuntmen, who write “Aug-3-62, It’s a Great Escape, Roy Sickner,” “Aug 3-62, I’ve had a crashing good time, Roy Jenson,” “Bud Ekins,” and “Just like a home away from home & beats 55.00 per week. Chuck Hayward ‘The Great Escape.’” Also included is another page signed and inscribed by John and Dorothy Sturges. John Sturges was the film’s producer. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light toning and wrinkling (see images below).

Ekins is best known for his amazing motorcycle jump near the conclusion of the movie, as McQueen’s character tries to jump from Germany to Switzerland. A large signature directly related to one of McQueen’s most popular and successful roles. Pre-certified PSA/DNA, and Two COAs from highly regarded UACC Dealer and Conway’s Vintage Treasures.
