CLASSIC OFFICIAL 1928 WORLD SERIES BASEBALL PROGRAM
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS at NEW YORK YANKEES
Here's an amazing piece of sports and baseball history you're not likely to see again
Very nice, quite rare, early, desirable, and historic 1928 WORLD SERIES PROGRAM ST. LOUIS CARDINALS at NEW YORK YANKEES. This classic program is missing from most collections due to brevity of Series. YANKEES won 4 games to 0 for second straight World's Series sweep, first time this had been done. They had also swept the Pirates in 1927. Program is clean and unscored for a game at YANKEE STADIUM. Light pencil checks next to lineup names. Only year for ornate cover style used by Yankees in Series programs. Last year for Legendary Yanks' Manager Miller Huggins who would pass away unexpectedly in 1929 at only 51, who appears on the cover....
Ironic Old Gold Cigarette ad in center near scorecard featuring Babe Ruth endorsement. Babe would sadly pass away in 20 years from throat cancer.
Like most, Game 3 was also loaded with "fireworks", Oct. 7, Tom Zachary won over Jesse Haines, Yanks 7-3 before 39,602. Lou Gehrig rocketed two homers in this game and drove in as many runs by himself as the entire Cardinals team combined in the Series. He batted .545 with 4 homers and 9 RBI.
Babe Ruth hit .625 (10 for 16, with 3 HRs, all in Game 4 and 4 RBI, in 1930, Ruth called this game the biggest thrill of his career) as the Yankees demolished their opponents by a combined score of 27 to 10, atoning for 1926 Series loss. Like 1926, Ruth belted three home run balls over the right field pavilion at Sportsman's Park in Game 4 and Gehrig smashed one more. Unlike 1926, this was also the final game of the Series and served as a punctuation mark on the Yankees' dominance, when they unprecedently swept NL foes consecutively in 1927 and 1928.
