It was a sad day for America, but a tragic day for Joe Dimaggio. Here is an Original TYPE I photo that captures a teary eyed Joe D on that fateful day, leaving Marilyn's Funeral with his son. He would never recover emotionally and apparently left roses at her grave on her birth date for the rest of his life.

A Vintage 1962 Wire Photo of New York Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio with his son mourning at the funeral of his ex-wife and lover, Marilyn Monroe. The funeral was a private service in which DiMaggio took charge of all the arrangements. Under DiMaggio's express instructions, none of Marilyn's Hollywood friends were invited (he held them responsible, morally if not actually, for her death). Marilyn Monroe's funeral took place at 1:00pm on August 8, 1962, at the Westwood Village Mortuary Chapel on the grounds of the Westwood Memorial Cemetery. The photo was used in newsprint publication at the time and has a newspaper clipping with an AUG 9 1962 stamp date on the verso of this photo. A moving image in relation to the final chapter of the Joe & Marilyn love story that continues to fascinate a half-century later.
