The Ghost of Frankenstein (Universal, 1942). Fine/Very Fine. Studio Release Photo (8" X 10"). Horror.
Vintage silver gelatin, single weight, glossy finish photo. Starring Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi, Cedric Hardwicke, Ralph Bellamy, Lionel Atwill, Janet Ann Gallow, Barton Yarborough, Doris Lloyd, Leyland Hodgson, Olaf Hytten, Holmes Herbert, Colin Clive, and Dwight Frye. Directed by Erle C. Kenton.

By the time of this fourth entry in the Universal horror series, Boris Karloff had decided to give up monster roles in favor of his wonderful mad doctor turns. Basil Rathbone was busy being Sherlock Holmes, so the part of his famous monster creator from Son of Frankenstein, Wolf, was rewritten as his son, Ludwig. Cedric Hardwicke took over the mad scientist role from Rathbone and the series continued. Lon Chaney Jr. was the only actor on the Universal roster to appear as every "major" horror monster - including Dracula, the Wolf Man and the Mummy. Reports from the set told of how the makeup man, try as he may, just could not make the prosthetics originally formed for Karloff fit on a larger Chaney.

The fourth film in the Frankenstein saga, this was the first picture in which the Monster was portrayed by someone other than Boris Karloff. Lon Chaney Jr. dons the makeup here, as mad Ygor (Bela Lugosi) schemes with the disgraced Dr. Bohmer (Lionel Atwill) to have Dr. Ludwig Frankenstein (Sir Cedric Hardwicke) place his brain into the body of the mighty creature.
