The New Frontier (Republic, 1935). One Sheet (27" X 41"). This was John Wayne's second feature for the newly formed Republic Pictures and it was shot in Lone Pine, California. The film was similar to the Westerns Wayne had been making for the last four years under Lone Star and Monogram Studios, but Republic did have the advantage of better production value, better music and much prettier posters. It was during this mid-thirties period that the most beautiful John Wayne posters (as well as many of the best Western posters in general were produced).

The story of a wild frontier town and the man who tamed it, this Western was John Wayne's second film for the new studio, Republic (after Westward Ho). The newly opened studio was formed in 1935 from six Poverty Row studios in financial trouble, including Monogram and Mascot Pictures. A marvelous image of Wayne graces this very rare one sheet, along with a scene featuring Wayne, Warner Richmond and Al Bridge below. The poster is a superb display piece after having been professionally linen backed

This early Western, one of John Wayne's first for Republic, centers on eager pioneers and the wagon master (Wayne) who leads them to the new frontier. When his father (Sam Flint), a settler in the Oklahoma territory, is murdered, Wayne takes on the job of the fledgling town's first sheriff. Through multiple shootouts, ambushes, and showdowns with bad guys Warner Richmond and Glenn Strange, Wayne brings justice and law to the settlers. Lovely Muriel Evans is his love interest and she would star with Wayne again the following year in King of the Pecos This striking and colorful stone litho artwork is one of the best images of Wayne on any poster, a real prize.

When Monogram Studios merged with Lone Star Productions and several other producers to form Republic Studios in 1935, John Wayne was one of the stars used to launch the new franchise. This Western was Wayne's second with Republic, a studio with which he would remain until the early 1950s. Republic produced some of the most attractive lobby cards and posters in the 1930s, and this beautiful example shows what makes them so collectibleIt is one of the best Wayne images available on any poster, with a stunning portrait of a smiling Wayne taking up a full two-thirds of the image area.
