Civil War Soldier Tintype Photo Cased
Extraordinary Detail !

Very rare and original, 1860’s Union Civil War Artillery Sergeant in uniform, Sixth Plate Tintype Photograph!!

This original, period Tintype Photograph measures approx. 2 1/2” by 3 1/4” and is housed in a pressed paper hard case. The Tintype is a very attractive, full length, standing portrait of a salt and pepper bearded NCO wearing a twelve button shell jacket with two buttons on either side of the tall collar. There are gold gilt chevrons on his shell jacket that identify him as a Sergeant and shoulder scales which suggest that he could be either an early war cavalryman or mid war artilleryman where the decorative scales seem to have persisted in the eastern theater for a longer period of time. The sergeant is wearing civilian gloves as opposed to gauntlets. Neither the Soldier nor the Photographer are identified in any way.

Note: We have collected civil war photography for the past 30 years and it is rare to find a tintype with this exceptional detail and contrast as most are dark and blurry.

This rare and original, Civil War Tintype Portrait of a Union Army Artillery Sergeant is in excellent condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The Tintype is exceptionally clean with no scratches, surface wear, crazing, damage or repairs of any kind. There are no bends to the plate and overall the Image is exceptionally well preserved and displays beautifully.

The pressed paper hard case is split at the spine and has edge wear as can be seen in the images below.      A very rare and original, 1860’s Civil War Sixth Plate Tintype Photograph of a Union Army Artillery Sergeant
