Mickey Mantle & Ty Cobb, 1958
Original Vintage TYPE I Vintage Baseball Photo ( 7 x 9.75")

PSA Authenticated TYPE I

Another amazing piece of sports history !

An Original TYPE I Iconic photo of two of the greatest baseballs players, from two different generations, Ty Cobb and Mickey Mantle.   In this dramatic impromptu moment and scene captured  on film, a fatherly figure Ty Cobb seems to be lecturing Mantle, possibly  (per the back News Service snipe) on a Mantle batting average slump of  .291, which for any other player would be celebratory, but not for Mantle.   Whatever the real conversation  it appears  to be intense with the Mick’s head down and Cobb using his pointing finger for emphasis.   A great historic image on the Rare photo and Only TYPE I we’ve ever seen.

NOTE: Although copies and Wire versions of this photo have appeared on the market, this is the Only TYPE I we have come across. Compare THIS (immediately processed off original negative)  to the Wire photos and the contrast in quality is like night and day.  This is surely one of the best you will find !

Has original News Service snipe on back along with Associated Press stamp and several date stamps and original newspaper clipping about this iconic meeting .

Additional Info:

He hadn’t played in 30 years but when Ty Cobb spoke, ballplayers tended to listen.

In 1958, the man whose name was still atop the all-time hits list paid a visit to Yankee Stadium for Old Timer’s Day.  He struck up a conversation with two-time reigning MVP Mickey Mantle and the cameras began to click.

While images of that historic chat session have been seen before, original photos from that August 11, 1958 moment are scarce. In particular, TYPE I photos are VERY RARE!

While it isn’t known exactly what was said between the two icons, Cobb did take time out to chat with reporters as well. Some of his comments made their way into newspapers across the country.  He lamented the emphasis on home runs as opposed to “small ball” and said his base stealing prowess came not just from good speed, but studying pitchers’ legs and feet.  He also said he had no qualms about stealing bases, no matter the score.
