"The Greatest" by KARSH of OTTAWA !

"Within every man and woman a secret is hidden, and as a photographer it is my task to reveal it if I can. The revelation, if it comes at all, will come in a small fraction of a second with an unconscious gesture, a gleam of the eye, a brief lifting of the mask that all humans wear to conceal their innermost selves from the world. In that fleeting interval of opportunity the photographer must act or lose his prize." - Yousuf Karsh

An EXCEPTIONAL Vintage 1970 ORIGINAL Photo of Muhammad Ali as captured by renowned portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh of Ottawa. Widely regarded as one of the greatest in portraiture, Karsh was a grandmaster when it came to studio lighting. He photographed many of the great and celebrated personalities of his generation and his preferred tool of his trade was the 8×10 bellows Calumet camera. What made Karsh special was his gift for capturing the essence of his subject in the instant of his portrait. Karsh published an amazing 15 books on photography, which include brief descriptions of the sessions, during which he would ask questions and talk with his subjects to relax them as he composed the portrait. Some famous subjects photographed by Karsh were Muhammad Ali, Humphrey Bogart, Fidel Castro, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Dwight Eisenhower, Ernest Hemingway, John F. Kennedy, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. Perhaps Journalist George Perry said it best when he wrote in the British paper The Sunday Times that "when the famous start thinking of immortality, they call for Karsh of Ottawa."

Karsh was the 1st photographer recruited to "Camera Press of London" by founder Tom Blau in 1947. His works were issued by the photographer as well as "Camera Press of London" when they were syndicated for newspaper and publication use at the time they were made. Karsh's vintage originals (made at the time period he took that subject's portrait and off the original Karsh negative) are EXTREMELY RARE and highly sought after. They are embedded in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada, New York's Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, Bibliotheque nationale de France, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the National Portrait Gallery of Australia and other private collections.

Here is a rare opportunity to acquire a Karsh original. The offered photo is a VINTAGE exemplar of TYPE I classification, made in the 1970 by Karsh's agency, "Camera Press of London" and has the original 1970 style press stamp from the agency and caption with the "Karsh of Ottawa" credit on the reverse. The double-weight photograph has been beautifully preserved and grades a solid excellent to mint in condition. As you would expect from a Karsh original made from the original negative, the contrast is striking and the clarity, razor sharp where one can see every fine detail of Ali's facial features. Just a superb portrait in all respects that allows one to peer into the soul of the sport's greatest champion - through the lens of Yousuf Karsh !

A chance to own a genuine and exceptionally extraordinary piece of Sports & Muhammad Ali History!
