The sort-of-true life story of George M. Cohan won an Oscar for James Cagney. When it came out, Cohan said, "It was a good movie. Who was it about?" It was a real departure for Cagney who had been cast in one gangster part after another. However, Cagney was originally trained as a dancer and his talents are showcased here.
James Cagney gives another unforgettable performance, this time as real-life song and dance legend George M. Cohan with direction by Michael Curtiz. Cagney is a powerhouse, just exploding on stage and earning an Academy Award for Best Actor in the process. Joan Leslie and Walter Huston co-star and offer great support with their performances. This classic musical captured several Academy Awards in what was to become one of Warner Bros.' biggest hits of WWII.
