1860 Campaign Photograph of Abraham Lincoln. This original portrait of Abraham Lincoln, considered by many to be the finest "beardless portrait" of him, was taken by photographer Alexander Hesler (1823-1895) in Springfield, Illinois on June 3, 1860 during Lincoln's presidential campaign.
Abraham Lincoln: Photograph By George Ayres from the Original Negative. Stunning 7" x 9" photograph by George Ayres. On the verso is Ayres name and a copyright circa 1890. Listed in Lincoln in Photographs as O-26, and taken by Hesler on June 3, 1860. Ayres purchased Alexander Hesler's original negatives from the Chicago photographer shortly after the Civil War. In 1881 he started printing images from the original negatives, this being one of those images. In 1933 the original negatives were broken when being shipped through the U. S. Mail to Washington, D. C.

There are fragments of printed literature about the photo on the back of the frame preserving a lot for invaluable provenance on this iconic historic photo. Often referred to as “The Greatest photo ever taken of Abraham Lincoln”.

Note: This photo has appeared on the market a few times, typically in high end auctions. HOWEVER, while a number of copies of this photo off the original negative were produced up until the negative was destroyed in 1933, you will see varying levels of quality. Take a close look at the images above and below and compare to others that have sold, you will notice THIS specimen is Extraordinary. In particular it has not turned Dark like most of the others have. And especially with the larger prints that lost quite a bit of quality, this photo developed off the Original Ayers negative around 1890, is simply stunning !
No doubt the negative developing process and skill of the developer made a BIG difference.
A breathtaking image of a relatively young looking Lincoln as he was campaigning for the Presidency in 1860, and before the intense stress and anxiety from probably the most traumatizing four years a president has ever endured, took its toll on his health and accelerated aging process. Four years from when this photo was taken, Lincoln would look 20 years older.

This original portrait of Abraham Lincoln, considered by many to be the finest "beardless portrait" of him, was taken by photographer Alexander Hesler (1823-1895) in Springfield, Illinois on June 3, 1860 during Lincoln's presidential campaign. The large size of the negative created a revealing portrait of Lincoln for the voters. Hesler sold his Chicago studio to George B. Ayers (1867-?) in 1866, and when Ayres moved to Philadelphia, he took the original Lincoln negatives with him, printing from the glass plate of Lincoln until the end of the century.
