A renown New England auction house recently offered the "The Lost Drawings of George Wachsteter", an extraordinary auction of one of the foremost and most prolific caricaturists of the 20th century. The collection from the estate of famed caricaturist George Wachsteter included many 1950s/60s TV related pieces including the "Munsters" (sold for $9000) , Walt Disney, Judy Garland and many other entertainment icons. We are proud to have acquired the original artwork of Judy Garland done for CBS’s Judy Garland Show premier which aired in September 1963. A spectacular find! Description: PEN & INK ILLUSTRATION - Caricature by George Wachsteter (1911-2004), of Judy Garland for the Sept 13, 1963 premiere of CBS-TV's 'The Judy Garland Show' . She is bedecked in her 'C'mon Get Happy' costume, from her role in MGM's 1950 movie 'Summer Stock'. Artwork appeared on cover of Pictorial Magazine and TV View Section of New York Journal American same day as Judy's series debut and was syndicated to other Sunday TV magazine supplements nationally. And according to the CBS Press Release Letter was apparently used by CBS for their TV commercials and introduction to the "Judy Garland Show".

Judy Garland Show original artwork is on large 14 1/4" x 20 1/2" illustration board. Done for CBS, includes original press photo and snipe/letter for the press release from the CBS Photo Division to be used for CBS Promotion of the Judy Garland Show... It also includes the original pencil artwork of the original Judy image with an alternate style , with spot-lights in different angles. This artwork may have also been used for later promotions.. Toned, but clean. * VERY IMPRESSIVE in person! Incredible piece of Hollywood history for one of the most adored Hollywood icons!
BIO:
George Wachsteter (1911-2004) was considered to be one of the most prominent and in-demand caricaturists working in the country. From the 1930's to the 1960's he drew theatrical, radio, television and film related images for most of the major New York newspapers. Although he was the resident arts caricaturist for William Randolph Hearst New York Journal, later the Journal American, as well as syndicated to 100s of newspapers across the country, he was also occasional contributor to the New York Times, even during Hirshfeld's tenure, most notably the rendition of the Broadway sensation Oklahoma which graced the front page of the New York Times in 1945. A gradual loss of his vision ended his drawing career prematurely in the late 1960's and he lived in relative obscurity with his wife in Elmhurst Queens till his death in 2004. In March, 2008, The Waldemar A. Schmidt Gallery of Wartburg College, Iowa, presented "The Lost Drawings of George Wachsteter: A 30 Year Retrospective." His life works, including paintings, sketches and drawings, were found in boxes after his death in 2004. Art Director Mathew Wilson worked with Wachsteter's family and estate to archive the collection for this exhibition. Among the pieces in "Lost Drawings" were drawings and watercolors of performers like Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Humphrey Bogart, Jackie Gleason, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Jerry Lewis, Zero Mostel, Ed Sullivan and Johnny Carson.
