Recently a customer asked me what I like to collect. Without hesitation, I said, “Vintage photography, like the vintage photos from the early 20th century. Because if exposed to the perfect elements, some of them acquire, over several decades, a stunning sepia patina, that I find memorizing!”. Authentically Autographed in the perfect locaton in lower right in vintage fountain ink, "To Milton, sincerely, Judy Garland."
Sometimes it takes years to find that right combination. That’s what I saw in this late 1930s vintage Judy Garland MGM Studio photo I recently acquired. A most rare full body portrait of a teenage Judy, with an innocent look on her face, with a most Remarkable Genuine Autograph on the lower right, with the most amazing contrast you could ever hope for in a historic signature. Based on the Judy Garland signature study, this is a 1939 “Wizard of Oz” era signature. Might this historic MGM Photo be a screen test for her iconic “Dorothy”role?
In our 40 years collecting, this may be the crown jewel of Judy Garland autographed photos. Just look at the enlargeable image above and what else needs to be said?
