Original vintage ink sketch of a man with large whiskers and a bulbous nose with a caption in dialect, “You’ll noo’ ha’ to get oot o’ the compartment,” on a 6 x 4.25 off-white album page, signed and inscribed, “To beautiful Orville[?] Burke with sincere good wishes and appreciation, W. C. Fields.” In fine condition, with light, even toning, file holes at left edge (well away from writing), and trivial brush to one word of inscription. Comes with THREE COA's from PSA/DNA COA, Conway's Autographs and HIGHLY regarded UACC Registered Dealer.
Perhaps more than any other comic writer since Shakespeare, W.C. Fields represented “everyman’s” struggle through life. He began his entertainment career with a humorous juggling act that led him to the greatest entertainment venue in the world at that time, the Keith/Orpheum Circuit. He moved through the early 1900s entertaining in command performances and finally in 1915 appearing in the first of his seven Ziegfeld Follies. Also in that year he began his movie career with a silent film called, “The Pool Shark.” In the 1920s, W.C. Fields became the most successful entertainer Broadway ever toasted, evidenced by the fact that he was the first star to have his name billed above the producer’s. In 1930 this internationally renowned fifty-year-old comedian made his first talking film and his fame continued to rise. Some of W.C. Fields’ most treasured classics include “My Little Chickadee”, “The Bank Dick” and “Never Give a Sucker an Even Break.”
