Incredible historical correspondence from Harry Houdini. Houdini signed letter to Moses Koenigsberg who started Kings Features Syndicate with William Randolph Hearst.  Google his name and you will see his Wiki page and biography.

We recently acquired two amazing Houdini letters directly from the descendants of Mr. Koenigsberg.  Hence, these two letters have never appeared on the market.   What makes these letters so extraordinary is WHEN they were both written, during the final days of his life. This amazing Harry Houdini letter was written on October 15, 1926 at the Van Curler Theater in Schenactady, New York.  But Houdini hand-wrote “Ansd 10/20/26”, apparently when he proofed the letter and added several handwritten comments and/or corrections.  Just 11 days before that fateful day in Detroit. . Signed in bold pencil at bottom with a very large “Houdini”. 

A significant comment, he discusses a broken ankle.   He adds a handwritten note after the first sentence, “just ? using left leg”  (not sure what second word is)...  

One of the other beliefs about Houdini’s death was a broken ankle he did not have treated.   From one Houdini related site claims that, “According to doctors, a blow to the stomach couldn’t cause a ruptured appendix, but his death could have been the result of a separate health problem. For instance, Houdini also had a broken ankle and ignored doctors’ advice to have it treated.”. More than 85 years later the Houdini conspiracists continue to debate how he really died.

At the bottom of the letter Houdini hand-writes, “Hope the family are ok”.    However, it is just below the signature that is most chilling.  Houdini instructs Mr. Koenigsberg to reply to him while Houdini is at the Princess Theater, Montreal, Canada during week of Oct. 18th.  This is when Houdini invited the zealous college student to punch him in the stomach.  After that Houdini instructs Mr. Koenigsberg to contact him at the Garrick Theater in Detroit, Michigan which would end up being Houdini’s final performance, as he dies in a Detroit Hospital on October 31, 1926.

Note, in both of these letters how Houdini expresses his excitement over his escalating success, i.e. “think I will create a record with our prices here in Worcester”.     This enthusiastic tone corroborates the legacy that Houdini was at the peak of his fame and career when that unexpected fatal injury and/or illness occurred.
