Details:
Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861) was an American politician from Illinois and the designer of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which opened up those territories for settlement and resulted in "bleeding Kansas," a local civil war over the expansion of slavery. He served as a U.S. Representative, a U.S. Senator, and the Democratic Party nominee for President in the 1860 election, losing to Republican Abraham Lincoln. Douglas had previously defeated Lincoln in a campaign for Senate, noted for the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858. Douglas had also courted Mary Todd for brief period, before her marriage to Lincoln.

In the early days of his career, Douglas served as Registrar of the Land Office in Springfield. This certificate records the purchase of land by Sampson Tams in 1837, and were signed by the 24 year-old Douglas.
