Harry Houdini
Historical Signed Autograph Letter, 1922

on Society of American Magicians letterhead

Houdini is unhinged!    A member of the Secret Society has done the unthinkable!
"Gibson is exposing an illusion, 'Sawing a Woman in Half,'" !

Harry Houdini wrote many letters over his relatively short life.   But, few and far between had extraordinary content like we are offering here, and even fewer where he discusses a significant magic trick, maybe the greatest magic trick of all time!   I have personally collected Houdini signed relics over the past 37 years collecting.  But, never have I seen such an important letter discussing such an important magic phenomenon, "Sawing a Lady In Half"... .    And Signed on the most desirable Society of American Magicians letterhead..    SIGNED in bold vintage fountain pen, "Houdini".  PSA Pre Certified

This museum-quality letter shows an intimate side of Houdini , as he appears quite upset about a "breach" in the secret club of magicians.      One of its member, Houdini fears, is committing the ultimate Taboo!   Possibly exposing one of the greatest magical acts of all time, to this day!   A truly spectacular once-in-a-lifetime find and
without question a Crown Jewel for magic, Houdini and historical document/autograph collectors!

NOTE:  Today at auction (June 10, 2017) another Houdini Signed
Society of American Magicians letter with relatively trivial content (compared to the letter we are offering here) sold for $4800.   And that letter doesn't compare to this historically significant, astonishing letter.

TLS signed “Houdini,” one page, 8.5 x 11, The Society of American Magicians letterhead, April 25, 1922. Letter to Richard Van Dien, in full: "Am mailing you a parcel of two color letter-heads. By the way, in the Newark Sunday Call, Mr. W. B. Gibson is exposing an illusion, 'Sawing a Woman in Half,' (although he is doing it incorrectly). If I am not mistaken he is a member of the Philadelphia Assembly. Will you please write to the secretary asking about this? Enclosed you will find a clipping from the Newark Sunday Call, which please return after perusal."   Houdini adds a brief postscript: "Did you send out the cards for the Ladies' Night?"  In fine condition, with slight ink marks to upper corner portion. ..PSA Pre Certified

Walter B. Gibson was as a prolific American author and pulp fiction writer responsible for the character The Shadow, a major influence for Bob Kane's Batman. Additionally, Gibson was a professional magician who served as a ghost writer for Houdini and many other legendary magicians and mentalists such as Howard Thurston, Harry Blackstone, Sr., and Joseph Dunninger. Although Houdini was initially upset with the article, the master magician quickly forgave Gibson and, impressed with the latter's own magic skills and inventions, often invited Gibson backstage during his performances.
