Providence Grays Team Signed Autographed Baseball, 1928
JSA Certified

* Babe Ruth's First Professional Baseball Team (Ruth signature NOT on ball)

1928 Providence Grays Team Signed Baseball (17 Signatures)
For all baseball fans and particularly aficionados , you may know a little of the history behind the Providence Grays, the first professional baseball team a young 19 year old names Babe Ruth played on before going to the Red Sox in 1914.. Of course Babe Ruth's signature is not included on this ball as he was playing for the NY Yankees in 1928. (if such a ball existed, Babe Ruth signed Providence Grays ball, I suspect it would sell at auction for $100,000+ )

Providence Grays History (Click to read)

And here is a great article in the Providence Journal commemorating the centennial of Babe Ruth’s appearance on the Providence Grays at their pitcher.

Providence Grays and Babe Ruth 100 Years ago (Click to read)

Needless to say, there is virtually NO original memorabilia from the Providence Grays on the market, except for maybe some old magazine articles.   An Unsigned photo of Ruth on the Providence Grays sold at auction about five years ago for over $13,000.

In the Spring of 1914  a nineteen-year old George Herman Ruth is sent  back down to the minors after failing to convince the Boston Red Sox, in twenty-three innings of pitching work, that he was ready for the Big Leagues just yet. Less than a year removed from his days at St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, the baby-faced Babe towers over his teammates at back row center in one of the earliest known images of baseball's greatest star as a professional. It was with the Providence Grays of the International League that the Babe would swat his first professional homer, during a September 5, 1914 meeting with Toronto. Despite this early hint at his destiny as the greatest slugger of his age, Ruth would continue in his pitching role for the Grays, helping to lead them to the International League Championship with a personal eight and three record.

This Signed baseball from 1928 is the only genuine autographed Providence Grays ball we have ever encountered in our 35 years collecting.  Not only an incredible treasure for someone who grew up in Rhode Island like myself, but for anyone with an appreciation for baseball history and where the greatest player of all time started his professional career.

This ball has been signed by about 17 members of the 1928 Providence Grays including many who went on to play in the Majors including Red Barron, Art Butler, Bill Dunlap, Clay Touchstone, Dinny McNamara, King Bader and Clay Touchstone .  Some signatures are easier to see then others as this 87 year old ball has been around longer then it took the Red Sox to win another World Series after they sold Babe Ruth to the NY Yankees in 1918.    Great piece of sports history!  This historic baseball has been professionally certified by the leading autograph authentication service JSA and comes with JSA COA.
