Cragstan-Daiya Astronaut Robot Battery Operated Toy
Made in Japan - Circa 1960

"Did you have one of these treasures when you were a kid?"

In the genre of vintage space toys, Japan is the king innovator of the universe.  And it is most evident in what value collectors place on the 1950s/60s Japan manufactured space toys.  In "Robot and Space Toys" published in 2000, this Robot was valued with the box at $2500.   BUt that was 15 years ago.  Vintage Space toys have continued to skyrocket in value over the past decade.  .

This is one of the most coveted of all vintage space toys.    The Cragstan-Daiya Astronaut made in Japan in 1961.  The spectacular classic battery operated tin robot is in very good condition with just minor scratches, mostly on the right foot.    And even more amazing is the astonishing working condition this treasure is in.   In excellent working condition he walks, raises his light flashing gun while the antenna on top of his head spins.    This robot is COMPLETELY original with only ONE replacement  part, the antenna.    We could go on and on about how incredible this 54 year old toy robot is , but what better way then to see it in action for yourself.  Take a trip back in time and check out the video demonstration here… (I think you will be in as much awe as I was!)

One of the more famous of all Cragstan-imported space toy products is the Astronaut,  by Daiya. This barrel-chested explorer  features terrific action and exquisite lithography. During operation, the 11-inch battery-op walks forward with determined locomotion. At  a certain point in the operational cycle, the figure stops, raises his jackhammer “gun” , and begins a firing sequence, consisting of flashing gun lights and a loud rat-tat-tat from within the Astronaut  lowers the gun and again walks forward.  Throughout the entire sequence, the head-mounted plated antenna dish spins.    Cragstan-Daiya Astronaut  is known in three versions: blue, green and red, each with minor lithography differences.  Green is considered the most rare with blue being the least rare.   Rosko sold the blue version as Space Conqueror (1960s) , Sears sold the “X-70” shoulder patch version in its 1961 Wish Book for the original retail price of $3.79.    No matter which version or which package, the Daiya Astronaut is simply one of the best-action and nicest lithography astronaut toys of any era .
