Oval Office by Roy Lichtenstein
Original SIGNED Autographed Lithograph, 1992

"A New Generation of Leadership"

ONLY 100 were Signed

Here is one of the most significant pieces of art history we've ever acquired.  From one of the most important artists of the 20th Century.  One of the few who commanded the demand and high value that Picasso did.   As a matter of fact, he sold even Higher then Picasso!    And, although a $70 million painting or Silk Screen  is out of our league this Rare Original SIGNED 1992 Print/Lithograph is an exciting find in its own right.   SIGNED lower right with bold black ink in his unique unmistakable signature style, "Roy Lichtenstein".

Size: (38" X 34")

Note: This museum grade Very Limited Edition Signed litho is produced on very heavy stock glossy professional lithograph paper.  Not the thin paper you see with the reproduced posters.

Oval Office by Roy Lichtenstein (1992). Rolled, Very Fine-. Autographed Art Print (38" X 34")
Offered in this lot is an autographed Roy Lichtenstein print commissioned by the Democratic National Committee in 1992, the year Bill Clinton defeated George H.W. Bush for the presidency. An unrestored poster with bright color and a clean overall appearance. It may have general signs of use, such as slight edge wear, light creases, unobtrusive smudges, or small tears. There are a few pieces of cellophane tape on the verso. The poster is signed by Roy Lichtenstein.   NOTE: this is the ORIGINAL Release of this Lithograph Print for the 1992 Presidential Inauguration.  It was later rereleased and reproduced in a smaller size in 1994-97.

Additional Historical Background:

I’ve read someone claim that there was a Proposed edition of 6000 of the “Oval Office”.  Although I have not seen any official Roy Lichtenstein source confirm this.  However, after extensive research we are highly confident that far fewer were made.   Furthermore, the “Oval Office” was recreated in at least three variations.  The first were Screen Prints which have sold for up to $60,000.   Thereafter, there were a handful of full size “Oval Office” Lithographs authorized and copyright in 1992 for the Clinton Inauguration that were 34x38” and titled “A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP”.   These were high quality lithographs on heavy glossy professional paper stock.   Of this particular edition we were only able to locate about nine that have sold in the past 20 years.
The auction record for this large poster is $7,475 (an unsigned impression at Poster Auctions International, 05/06/2007).   *THIS one we are offering here is authentically SIGNED by Roy Lichtenstein in bold ink in lower right.     * Note that this edition has not appeared on eBay in at least the last year and possibly NEVER as we could find NO history of this particular Roy Lichtenstein 1992 "Oval Office" edition ever appearing on eBay.

Then in 1994 and 1996 it was Reproduced as a smaller print (27x30) and re-titled “The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein”.  This later 1994-97 edition seems to have been reproduced in much higher quantity as there are about a half dozen listed on eBay.

Important Update (1/2/2020):

In 1991-92 Roy Lichtenstein completed the original “Oval Office” and then commissioned a New York Art Gallery  to produce 6000 high quality prints of “Oval Office” for the 1992 Bill Clinton Inauguration.  The Authorized prints/lithographs were titled “A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP”.

On 1/2/2020 I had a lengthy conversation with the Gallery and several valuable points of provenance were clarified.  The gallery manager stated: “We worked directly with Roy Lichtenstein on this ONLY authorized print of “Oval Office” titled "A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP”.

1.  The ONLY Authorized Size was 34x38” (as the one we are offering here)
2.   The 1992 Roy Lichtenstein Authorized Print Edition was titled, "A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP” (as this one is)
3.  The paper was a high quality stock of a heavier weight then typical poster paper.   (which this one is).
4.  Roy Lichtenstein authorized 6000 Prints made  (but few survived, see Note A below)
5.  Roy Lichtenstein Only Signed/Autographed 100 of this Original Authorized Edition (this one we are offering is one of those coveted Scarce 100! )
6.  Of the 100 Roy Lichtenstein signed, he Signed in fine point black flair felt ink and DID not number the 100 signed copies. He did NOT sign this limited 100 copies in pencil as he often did with his silk screens.

NOTE A.   I asked the Feldman Gallery Manager if they printed 6000 of this edition, why have so few ever appeared on the market (less than ten in the past 20 years)?
His response:   This is most likely because after we printed them they were issued Rolled and if they were not immediately stored they were easily creased, bent and crushed and hence destroyed.

This would explain why so few have appeared on the market over the past 20-30 years as the majority were most likely severely damaged and discarded.    As mentioned before,  a later smaller size Reproduction print titled, “The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein” with copyright “1994 Reproduction” appear in abundance on eBay.

BIOGRAPHY

Roy Fox Lichtenstein (October 27, 1923 – September 29, 1997) was an American pop artist. During the 1960s, along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist among others, he became a leading figure in the new art movement. His work defined the premise of pop art through parody. Inspired by the comic strip, Lichtenstein produced precise compositions that documented while they parodied, often in a tongue-in-cheek manner. His work was influenced by popular advertising and the comic book style. He described pop art as "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting". His paintings were exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City.

Whaam! and Drowning Girl are generally regarded as Lichtenstein's most famous works, with Oh, Jeff...I Love You, Too...But... arguably third. Drowning GirlWhaam! and Look Mickey are regarded as his most influential works. His most expensive piece is Masterpiece, which was sold for $165 million in January 2017 and is in the top ten most expensive works of art ever sold. .

Lichtenstein is regarded by many as the most important and valuable artist of the contemporary era (Mid-late 20th century), even exceeding more famous contemporaries like Andy Warhol.   And no where is this more evident then what art collectors are driven to pay for his work.  Below are examples of this Original "Oval Office" Print we are offering but in Silk Screen format.
Note again, that this Original 1992 Release of this print is highly rare, as we could only locate a few that have ever sold, and only found ONE that was SIGNED bRoy Lichtenstein.    Although there are plentiful smaller size reproductions released in 1994-97 under a different title on bottom border, "The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein",  whereas this Original was titled "A New Generation fo Leadership".
