Harry Houdini
Breath-Taking Personal Letters - During His Final Days of October 1926

Incredible historical correspondence from Harry Houdini. Houdini signed letter to Moses Koenigsberg who started Kings Features Syndicate with William Randolph Hearst.  Google his name and you will see his Wiki page and biography.

We recently acquired two amazing Houdini letters directly from the descendants of Mr. Koenigsberg.  Hence, these two letters have never appeared on the market.   What makes these letters so extraordinary is WHEN they were both written, during the final days of his life.   This letter you see here, was written on Sept 30, 1926 while he was performing at the Providence Opera House in Providence, RI.  He had just finished a three week engagement in Boston (which apparently was extended from 2 to 3 weeks due to popular demand) and next goes to Worcester, MA.   Signed in bold pencil at bottom with a very large “Houdini”.

At the bottom of his letter he lists his schedule at various New York venues and then his final engagement for October 25th at the Garrick Theatre in Detroit Michigan which he notes is for “Two weeks”.   However, he would never complete this scheduled appearance as he would unexpectedly pass away 6 days later in a Detroit hospital on October 31, 1926.     Note how in this letter he never mentions (apparently an unplanned show) at the “Princess Theatre” in Montreal Canada in October 18, which IS listed on the other letter (see below under Also Recommended).   What is important about the mentioning of this venue is that it was apparently an unplanned, last minute addition to his schedule.  And, it was at this Montreal show that he called up on stage a college student to punch him in the stomach, which many believe caused the ruptured appendix that lead to his death on Halloween 1926.

Note, in both of these letters how Houdini expresses his excitement over his escalating success, i.e. “think I will create a record with our prices here in Worcester”.     This enthusiastic tone corroborates the legacy that Houdini was at the peak of his fame and career when that unexpected fatal injury and/or illness occurred.

One of the most amazing and significant Houdini related letters to appear on the market...
