Very Rare and Larger size Original, 1880’s Cabinet Card Photograph of a young, and very beautiful Albino Woman / Sideshow Performer Mary Martin – one of the two “Martin Sisters” who toured with the Barnum and Bailey Circus in the late 19th century. This wonderful, period, Card Mount Photograph measures a relatively Large 3 7/8” by 5 1/2” and is mounted on its original photographer’s Card Mount (overall size is 4 1/4” by 6 1/2”).

This is a bust, profile portrait of the beautiful young woman, her long white hair flowing down over her shoulders. She is identified with a period inscription on the back of the mount that reads simply “May Martin”. The mount carries the mark of the well known celebrity photographer Charles Eisenmann of New York City.

Albinos where always a part of the 19th century Sideshow troup or “museum” oddity. They were seldom leading “features” but are considered “good to have” being, by their nature, and old stand by. They were comparatively easy to “procure” as their pink eyes and white hair are transmitted by inheritance and the children of Albinos would enter “show business” quite naturally. The Martin Sisters, who were among the most prominent in their line, were the daughters of Albino parent, who, having retired from the show business, lived on their savings in a comfortable home in Brooklyn, New York. These long haired albino beauties were named Florence and Mary Martin, and known publicly as “The Martin Sisters”. The sisters Florence and Mary Martin were "employees" of P. T. Barnum during the 1870s and 1880’s. The Martin Sisters were “born into the business” to parents who are albinos too and who blazed the trail for their stunningly beautiful daughters.

This rare and original, Ci rcus Sideshow Cabinet Card Photograph is in very good condition. The Image exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. The Photograph has some light soiling. The card Mount has some soiling, some light edge wear and a pin hole at the center of the top margin.

A very rare and original, 1880’s Cabinet Card Photograph of a young, and very beautiful Albino Woman / Sideshow Performer Mary martin and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
