The Hunchback of Notre Dame (RKO, 1939). Fine+. Uncut Pressbook (38 Pages, 12" X 18"). Horror.
In a stunning and sensitive portrayal, Charles Laughton brings Victor Hugo's deformed bell-ringer, Quasimodo, to life for the first time in the sound era. Daringly different than the more monstrous character immortalized in 1923 by Lon Chaney, Laughton's Quasimodo is a tender, almost poetic creature who falls in love with the gypsy girl Esmeralda (Maureen O'Hara). When she is wrongly accused of murder and sentenced to the gallows, Quasimodo rescues her, at the cost of his own life.

"I'm about as shapeless as the man in the moon!" This was the second version of Victor Hugo's classic novel that was adapted to the screen and Charles Laughton was cast as the tortured soul, Quasimodo. Laughton was one of the most brilliant actors of his era and the part was a wonderful challenge for the amazing star. Maureen O'Hara was cast as the beautiful gypsy, Esmerelda, who befriends the Hunchback. This press book is also quite beautiful as Quasimodo's features are kept in shadow to prevent the audience from glimpsing his disturbing makeup.

Starring Charles Laughton, Cedric Hardwicke, Thomas Mitchell, Maureen O'Hara, Edmond O'Brien, Alan Marshal, Walter Hampden, Harry Davenport, George Zucco, Katharine Alexander, Minna Gombell, and Rondo Hatton. Directed by William Dieterle.
