Singin' in the Rain, 1952
Original Three Sheet Movie Poster
(41" X 81")
Starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds

Now Professionally Linen Backed

In the AFI’s (American Film Institute) most recent survey “Singin in the Rain” ranks #5 in the top 100 greatest films ever made.  In AFI’s Top 100 Musical’s “Singin in the Rain” in ranked #1.   Clearly an important movie of historical significance.   Maybe the reason the latest one sheet to sell at auction a few months ago went for over $3500 (and not nearly in the excellent condition this one is).

VERY Rare Three Sheet for this iconic musical classic.   Although the one sheet appears on the market now and then the three sheet is rarely ever seen. As a matter of fact, the largest movie poster auction house has never offered a three sheet for sale.    This gorgeous three sheet not only has stunning artwork and graphics (even better then the one sheet) but the bottom half has several of the most notable scenes from the film.  A one sheet that was not in nearly as good condition as this three sheet and required extensive restoration sold at auction this past March 2013 for over $3500.  Just to show the incredible demand and appeal of this classic film.    NOTE: The Three Sheet has better and much more extensive artwork than the one sheet.

Prior to professional linen backing this three sheet was in surprisingly very good- excellent condition with just some minor tape stains in upper right and a small tear at the very corner top right border tip.   But now it looks amazing linen backed (which also eliminated the minor flaws such as the tape stains).   You will also note on the images below that it has the original studio stamp on the reverse showing its 1952 release.  This is very important to some of our customers as some consider this as extra layer of authenticity.  Hence, prior to linen backing we took a photo of this important stamp.

UPDATE: This iconic movie poster three sheet has been professionally linen backed and looks amazing !   Prior to 1980 all Original movie posters (one, three and six sheets) were folded prior to shipping of movie theaters.   So WOW!, when you see the difference between the folded poster and linen backed ,  the linen backed poster look spectacular.    And, not only does linen backing preserve and protect the vintage paper, but it can be easily rolled up for easy storage and/or displayed on the wall without having to touch the poster itself.

An amazing and extremely rare discovery that is not likely to happen any time soon or possibly ever again!

Singin' in the Rain (MGM, 1952). Three Sheet (41" X 81").
One of the greatest musicals of all time, this wonderfully entertaining feature was co-directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly, and features the dancing skills of Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, and Cyd Charisse.  This is the story of a silent film star (Gene Kelly), and his attempt to make the transition to sound films. Unfortunately, his leading lady (Jean Hagen) has a voice that is totally unsuited to the new medium, leading Kelly and his best friend and music director, Donald O'Connor, to search for a replacement.

Here Gene Kelly almost does it all -- he is brilliant as the star, choreographer, and director (along with Stanley Donen) of this bursting-with-energy musical. Perhaps his most memorable performance of his career is his iconic rendition of the title song, and Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor are equally unforgettable. For any fan of musicals, this is the top poster to add to your collection.

In the famous dance routine in which Gene Kelly sings the title song while twirling an umbrella, splashing through puddles and getting soaked to the skin, Kelly was sick with a 103 °F (39 °C) fever. The rain in the scene caused Kelly's wool suit to shrink during filming. A common myth is that Kelly managed to perform the entire song in one take, thanks to cameras placed at predetermined locations. However this was not the case as the filming of the sequence took place over 2–3 days. Another myth is that the rain was mixed with milk in order for the drops to show up on camera, but the shots were simply lit from the front.

Debbie Reynolds was not a dancer at the time she made Singin' in the Rain; her background was as a gymnast. Kelly apparently insulted her for her lack of dance experience, upsetting her. In a subsequent encounter when Fred Astaire was in the studio, he found Reynolds crying under a piano. Hearing what had happened, Astaire volunteered to help her with her dancing. Kelly later admitted that he had not been kind to Reynolds and was surprised that she was still willing to talk to him afterwards. After shooting the "Good Morning" routine, Reynolds' feet were bleeding. Years later, she was quoted as saying that "Singin' in the Rain and childbirth were the two hardest things I ever had to do in my life."

Donald O'Connor had to be hospitalized after filming the "Make 'em Laugh" sequence. He smoked up to four packs of cigarettes a day.

Most of the costumes from this film were eventually acquired by Debbie Reynolds and housed in her massive collection of original film costumes, sets and props. Many of these items were sold at a 2011 auction in Hollywood. While most items were sold to private collectors, Donald O'Connor's green check "Fit As a Fiddle" suit and shoes were purchased by Costume World, Inc. and are now on permanent display at the Costume World Broadway Collection Museum in Pompano Beach, Florida.

In 1989, Singin' in the Rain was among the first 25 films chosen for the newly established National Film Registry for films that are deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation.
