1939 Wire Photo - Brave LOU GEHRIG w/ALS Disease Report

Here’s one of the well known images of Lou Gehrig captured in this Vintage 1939 Wire Photo issued by the Associated Press on June 20th, 1939. It shows this man who knew he was going to die, putting on a cheerful smile for the cameras as he waves to the crowd. This fascinating image of Lou was taken at the airport after his visit to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where he was diagnosed with the terminal disease that would bear his name. Lou is shown holding the doctor’s report, sadly in this case, his death sentence. Photograph measures 8” x 10-3/4” and has editorial crop markings as it was used in newspaper publication at the time when the news on baseball’s Iron Man and his condition was highly anticipated !
