DESCRIPTION:
auction is for an terrific and desirable official program for the heavyweight championship fight between Joe Louis and Arturo Godoy on June 20, 1940 at YANKEE STADIUM. In a rematch, Louis defended his title by stopping Godoy in the 8th round. Godoy was down once in the 7th round and was saved by the bell. He was then down twice in the 8th round in a bizarre finish, after the second knock down and the referee had stopped the fight, Godoy charged Louis' corner while his back was turned. The two had previously fought Feb. 9, 1940 at Madison Square Garden where Louis won a popular 15 round split decision. 16 pages complete. Complete with biographies and photos of both fighters. Beautiful Lon Keller graphic action cover. A very tough item due to the upcoming War, most vanished in paper drives to support the war effort.
