 Why is collecting autographs so exciting?

Autograph collecting allows collectors to own a genuine piece of history personally signed by a famous figure. A signed photo, document, or book represents a moment when that individual physically handled the item, creating a unique connection between the collector and the past.

 Why are authentic autographs valuable?

Authentic signatures combine **history, rarity, and personal connection**. Many were signed decades ago and only limited examples survive. Because of their scarcity and historical importance, original autographs are highly sought after by collectors.

Authentic signatures usually show natural pen pressure and slight variations that distinguish them from printed or mechanically reproduced signatures.   Also,  Unrealstic selling prices are a dead giveaway.  For example, a Harry Houdini autograph that sells online for $500 but has a consistent market value of $1500-2000 is a clear sign the Experienced Audience knew it was fake. 

 What is a Certificate of Authenticity (COA)?

A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is documentation stating that an autograph has been reviewed by an expert and deemed genuine. While a COA can add confidence, it is only worth the reputation of the Seller.  Experienced collectors also study the autograph itself and the reputation of the seller.

What are warning signs of a fake autograph?

Why do collectors prefer vintage autographs?

10 Signs an Autograph Is Authentic

 1. Natural Pen Pressure

Authentic signatures typically show natural variation in pen pressure, with thicker and lighter lines created as the pen moves across the paper.

 2. Ink Flow and Aging

Older signatures usually show natural ink aging and slight fading consistent with the age of the item.

 3. Signature Variation

No two genuine signatures are exactly identical. Authentic autographs usually show small differences from one example to another.

 4. Correct Historical Medium

The autograph should appear on materials consistent with the time period, such as vintage photographs, letters, books, or documents.

 5. Matching Known Examples

Collectors often compare a signature to verified examples from trusted sources or historical archives.   

 6. Period Paper and Printing

Authentic vintage items should show paper, printing techniques, or photographic processes consistent with the era.

 7. Provenance or Ownership History

Items that come from established collections, estates, or reputable dealers often carry stronger confidence among collectors.

10B.  EXPERIENCE

Of all the signs this is the Most important.    This is something you CAN NOT get from Forensic’s training. No school can teach what a genuine Frank Sinatra or Babe Ruth of JFK signature looks like because the inexperienced eye will not see the subtleties that stand out in an expert forgery.   This acquired skill, often referred to as “the eye”,  can only come from seeing hundreds or thousands of signatures.   Some decades long dealers Never acquire this unique skill.  Just like as in the Art industry, it is an acquired “gift”.    Some dealers will claim to be experts but are far from it.  They are also usually the Same people that will trash the reputable authentication companies.  Over 40 years of collecting  I’ve met a select few that have this “gift” that you would recognize when/if you see it. 

If you still don’t understand what I mean by “the eye”, read in the book “Blink” the chapter about the kouros statue purchased by the J. Paul Getty Museum in the 1980s. The museum believed the statue was an ancient Greek sculpture worth millions.
