John Wayne's Personal Traveling Trunk

One of the most amazing pieces of Hollywood history we have acquired recently.  John Wayne’s personal wardrobe travel trunk issued to him during his tenure with Republic Pictures, which lasted nearly 20 years from 1935 to 1952.  According to the Republic Pictures wiki page, “Years later, John Wayne allowed that the reason he left Republic in 1952 was the threat of having to make another picture - he had endured two - with Miss Ralston.  Yates (Herbert Yates was the studio head), Ralston's new husband, remained Ralston's biggest supporter.”     So, apparently  Wayne took the Republic wardrobe trunk with him as he used it well into the 1960’s according to labels on the trunk (i.e. Hatari).

An extraordinary relic that came from a well known collector who not only had one of the largest movie memorabilia collections but also was friends with many of the stars.  We rarely acquire personal relics from notable figures, except when solid provenance is available. In addition, we are very familiar with this particular collection, having acquired and seen many reputable Hollywood artifacts from it.

What more needs to be said. And if you were wondering what the demand was for John Wayne related memorabilia, check out my blog about recent auction results.  See more images below.

A terrific piece of John Wayne memorabilia that served as a significant part of his acting life for a number of years, offered here is The Duke's personal traveling wardrobe trunk, extensively used throughout Wayne's tenure with Republic Pictures. Measuring approximately 4 1/2 feet tall, 2 1/2 feet wide, and 1 1/2 feet deep, the trunk features a wardrobe compartment along with four drawers of varying depth and sizes. When on location, this trunk undoubtedly served as Wayne's "home away from home". The outside of the trunk exhibits plenty of scuffs and bumps to affirm it's extensive usage. In addition to a Replublic Pictures stamping, the trunk features a gold engraved plate which reads, "Republic Pictures Co., Wardrobe Dept, J. Wayne." Originally acquired from Wayne via his long time friend and legendary western stuntman John "Bear" Hudkins, and is accompanied by a detailed Letter of Authenticity which outlines the trunk's origins.
