Buffalo Wild Bill Cody
1888 Goodwin Champions Tobacco Card

One of the most significant historical non sport cards we've ever offered!

This is where Collectors of Sport and Non Sport Cards, Tobacco, and Wild Old West come together with a shared love of collecting history.

If you are a long time experienced sports/non-sport card collector you are familiar with grading and authentication companies, you know these services are far from perfect and are based more on subjectivity than on science.    So often I see a card that is obviously graded too high or too low from a visual inspection.    This week we acquired a 135 year old Goodwin Tobacco card #N162 with Wild Bill Cody.

The card was graded a 2 by SCG.    However,  after close inspection the card appears to easily rate a 5 or 6 grade with incredible borders, near perfect centering, great colors and very little border wear.  It unquestionably blows away the two other examples we displayed below in which those other two grade a 3 by PSA or SCG.   The only explanation we got from the source we acquired from was they think SCG downgraded because the back has remnants of possibly an adhesive when it was so amazingly preserved in the 1888 A36 Goodwin & Co. Champions Tobacco Premium Album.    Although it is a very subtle residue and a small brown speck.    That said, a card that would otherwise have easily grade a 5 or 6 with spectacular corners, borders, extraordinary Centering and overall condition.

BIO:
The 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions Tobacco set included 50 cards of athletes and personalities in a variety of games and sports around the world. Of interest to most collectors in the U.S. are the eight baseball cards as well as the football card of Harry Beecher – widely recognized as the first American football card printed. Beecher is unknown to most collectors these days but was one of the early great players of college football. Here’s more on his career and background.

Among the eight baseball cards are four Hall of Famers – the legendary Cap Anson, Dan Brouthers, Tim Keefe, and King Kelly. Other key cards in the set include Buffalo Bill and boxer Jack Dempsey, among a few others that can be difficult to find.

1888 N162 Goodwin "Champions" Buffalo Bill Cody/Wild West Star SGC Good 2.  Very attractive with a pleasing display of hues. The SGC assessment is the combination of edge roughness (bottom reverse), mild reverse staining and modest wear at cornets.  However, based on the extraordinary front it appears to have been significantly undergraded
A fun card of one of the more celebrated personalities of the Old American West who is famous for his "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show." Graded SGC Good 2.
The reverse does not display the lithographers credit, which based on extensive research was not unusual for some of these cards.
