Daughter of Shanghai (Paramount, 1937). Vintage TYPE I Photo  (8" X 10").
The first Chinese-American movie star, Anna May Wong, had a series of major roles in successful films through the 1920s and 1930s. Unfortunately, these parts slowly dwindled during the 1940s due to racism and the "Yellow Peril" Americans felt during the war with Japan. She stars here in the lead role, as Lan Ying Lin, in this suspenseful crime drama directed by Robert Florey. Lin is hunting down her father's killers and aids FBI agent Kim Lee (Philip Ahn) in an investigation into human traffickers played by J. Carrol Naish and Larry "Buster" Crabbe. Always in high demand and usually quite scarce, any material featuring the legendary actress is a special opportunity for fans of early Hollywood.

Starring Anna May Wong, Philip Ahn, Charles Bickford, Larry (Buster) Crabbe, J. Carrol Naish and Anthony Quinn. Directed by Robert Florey.

BIO:
Anna May Wong (born Wong Liu Tsong; January 3, 1905 – February 3, 1961) was an American actress, considered to be the first Chinese American Hollywood movie star, as well as the first Chinese American actress to gain international recognition. Her varied career spanned silent film, sound film, television, stage, and radio.?

Anna May Wong was producer Ross Hunter's original choice for Madame Liang in the fantastic 1961 musical ""Flower Drum Song, and Wong wanted to do the film.  However, her sudden death at the age of 56, just before filming was scheduled to begin, resulted in the part being given to Juanita Hall, who had created the role on Broadway.

In 2022 the US Treasury issued the Anna May Wong quarter, with a beautiful image of her on the back of George Washington!
