Bedlam (RKO, 1946). Rolled, Very Fine. Half Sheet (22" X 28").

After getting a glimpse of the conditions at the St. Mary's of Bethlehem Asylum, known as "Bedlam," Nell Bowen (Anna Lee) is concerned that the patients are being mistreated. When she seeks to better the situation, the head of St. Mary's, George Sims (Boris Karloff), uses his political savvy to have Nell committed. Being within St. Mary's does not deter Nell, however, and she starts to turn the patients against Sims in a bid to violently oust him from power.

Starring Boris Karloff, Anna Lee, Billy House, Richard Fraser, Jason Robards Sr., Leyland Hodgson, Joan Newton, Elizabeth Russell, Tommy Noonan. Directed by Mark Robson. An unrestored poster with bright color and a clean overall appearance. There is some edge bumping and dents along the left side of the bottom border, light corner bumps and some light smudging in the bottom border.

Artist BIO:  William Rose  (1909-1972)

According to film historians Stephen Rebello and Richard C. Allen, Rose was "one of Hollywood's busiest and best posterists". He was closely identified with RKO Radio Pictures, where he worked in-house for many years. His artwork shaped the "colorful and brash" direction taken by the studio's advertising department. He mostly painted in pastel and watercolor, which were the media typically used in the RKO art department. Aside from RKO, he contributed artwork to Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

Most of his poster work was in the 1930s and 1940s, during the Classic Hollywood era and the peak of the studio system. At that time, most poster artists worked for studio art departments and, as a result, most of these artists' individual contributions went unrecognized; many iconic posters of the period are considered anonymous works. Rose is considered one of the rare poster artists of the period whose individual style has achieved recognition, alongside others like Al Hirschfeld, Alberto Vargas, and Reynold Brown.   In 2003, the American Film Institute ranked his alternate poster for Citizen Kane (1941) at no. 36 on its "100 Years... 100 American Movie Poster Classics" list.
