Serious collectors of historical photography are drawn to the most iconic historical images like Babe Ruth as a Boston Red Sox pitcher or Neil Armstrong on the Moon.   

But another facet I personally look for in a vintage Type 1 photo is the Quality, contrast and eye appeal.  For example, while a Type 1 photo may capture an iconic moment in history like the Titanic survivors being rescued in one of their rafts,  the quality is usually grainy or blurry as the photographic processes as still in its infancy.

Hence when I see a 100 year old photo that captures the details like on Babe Ruth face with extraordinary shades of black and white, to where you can see the wrinkles in his face, that is Masterpiece photo art.  And only the highest skilled photographers could capture and produce those Rare exceptionable images with the limited technology they had.
